Some people just were not meant to be reloaders. I suspect you suffer from "Darwin Syndrome"

If you insist on continuing to reload, I suggest you make sure you have life insurance to the max. That way wifey will not be left in the lurch when you have a disastrous mishap.

Ever so helpful. I'm sure new forum members will be enthusiastic at these kinds of responses to questions.

This thread is useless without pics.  Mainly because I don't think Greenday is up to the task of accurately describing the failure.

As he is describing it,  the cartridge went wooshing past the chamber and was fully seated IN the barrel. That a .378" case head was jammed in a .224" hole without anything seeming weird. This is not possible. Which means he's not accurately describing what happened.

The best guess any of us have trying to interpret that mess is that he bumped the shoulder back enough to make the brass essentially shorter than the chamber.

We live in an age of ubiquitous cameras. Take a damn picture. Sheesh.

Yea, okay, so you are absolutely right. I didn't describe the failure correctly. It happened again and I saved the round. Overall length was 2.2550". But dropped it into my case gauge and lo and behold, didn't fit all the way in. Definitely a No-Go.

Finally got a modified case for my OAL gauge. Here's what's throwing me off. Pushed it in until the case was in, then pushed the rod until the bullet made light contact with the end of the chamber. Did this three times. Measured 2.3430" every time. This seems long to me.

    Equipment used:

Hornady OAL Straight Guage w/ Hornady .223 Modified Case

55 gr FMJBT Hornady .223 round

Hornady Lock-N-Load Headspace Comparator & Anvil for .223

    Edit:

With my Sierra MK 52gr HPBT, I got an OAL of 2.3430".

With Sierra MK 77gr HPBT, I got an OAL of 2.289".

CFE 223 measures very well out of my Dillon + -  .1gr out of Ideal 55 as well.

Once I dial in my volume on my Lee Deluxe Perfect Powder Measure, I'd agree with this. I'm still doing small batches so I check every round to verify it and so far it's been extremely precise.

  4. I'm liked it in my 55gr FMJBT. But I was also shooting bolt so I wouldn't have the same problem. Was finding 25.5 gr of CFE 223 was pretty solid grouping. I think ideal will be slightly higher like 25.7. Loaded up three different grains of match ammo. Excited to test those, though if I'm not shooting really far out, I doubt I'll need anything about the 52gr Matchking.

But..... did you use a case gauge?

    Was the primer struck?

Im going to take a guess here and say you over sized the round... it's literally the only way a cartridge can push past the neck in the chamber... and if it was measured with out a case gauge then OAL would jam the bullet into the lands

Yes. Case gauge, pocket gauge, calipers. Length of everything was 2.2580 plus/minus 0.0005" I was kinda anal about making them all the same dimensions for consistency. Not sure if the primer was struck. Sounded like a dry fire to me. It's completely possible of course I missed one sizing them.

    Did you crimp the rounds?

    No.

    No powder?

Would that make the case go into the barrel? I know that can cause a squib round.

You probably screwed up reloading the round. Did you run it thru a case gauge?

That's what I figured, but it was the correct length, diameter, etc.And I weighed out every single charge. It's almost like when it loaded from the magazine into the chamber, it immediately slid into the barrel. Just glad I didn't try to fire another round.

Them liberal tear drops of your's  probably rusted up the chamber.

    I thought that too!

  7. Strange thing happened to me this morning at Range 14. Was shooting some .223 out of my Ruger Ranch in 5.56 and with one of my rounds, there was no recoil and no new hole in my target. Took my magazine out, opened the chamber and there was a full round, case and bullet, stuck in the barrel with the primer end flush meeting the chamber. I've never seen or heard of this before. What would cause this?

  8. Central Jersey really got this one. Southeastern quarter of NJ got some decent storms but other than a couple trash cans falling over, it didn't get too crazy. I was surprised when my family north of me said they lost power. Atlantic City Electric has barely any outages in South Jersey. Though I did hear a tree or something fell down on the PATCO train tracks cancelling trips to and from Philly.

  9. Most of the RSO's are ex-military. Really cool guys. Extremely knowledgeable. And I really like how they show new shooters how to properly handle firearms with personal attention.

The owner strictly defers to the head RSO. He knows the head RSO has a vast amount of experience and it would be crazy not to listen to him. And when it comes to issues I've talked to him about that comes to range safety, he has told me that the final say comes from the head RSO. He may be strictly a businessman, but the fact that he relies on those with RSO experience to make those policies is a smart move.

I can only hope and pray that you are also frequenting other forums and websites where non-gun owners (and even gun-haters) gather... and that you point out things like this to THEM.  Here?... you're preaching to the choir.

Guns don't get brought up much elsewhere. But I am very vocal about how stupid the laws are in person.

I think he was pointing out the slap on the wrist sentencing...

It's just two issues for the same problem. The laws they pass aren't designed to actually stop misuse of guns, just look like they are doing something. And that the lack of enforcement of laws is letting the misuse of guns continue on while the innocent get preyed upon.
