Agree, but 99% of my traffic stops have been because I committed infraction.  Unavoidable stops have usually involved unconstitutional (IMO) sobriety checks or CBP checkpoints.

Okay, regarding your 1% of your stops.

Sobriety checkpoints have been ruled Constitutional by the Supreme Court.  If you believe in the COTUS, you have to accept sobriety checkpoints.

Border Patrol Checkpoints?  Long established as legal by SCOTUS.  Once again if you believe in the COTUS whether you like it or not.

I spent my career dealing with SCOTUS decisions. Whether I liked them or not.

I don't want to derail this particular thread, but I just watched this video (after subbing to a couple of the gun lawyer youtube channels) and the readers of this thread are keeping up with the rapid (from a long-term perspective) advancements in our 2A rights.

This 9th circus situation would have ENORMOUS implications on everyone, but especially us, caught behind enemy lines.

CA's argument would mean TV, radio, podcasts, etc  are not protected by the 1A.

My understanding is that when this comes into effect, you must inform immediately upon contact with LEO. At a traffic stop, I'm going to have my hands at 10 and 2 until the officer has come to the window and has seen that I'm not a threat.

What I will not be doing is rummaging around getting my wallet out to find my license and permit as the officer approaches my car.

Notification is what is called for, and then presentation of the permit upon request...and yes, phrasing to avoid the word GUN is highly advisable.

When stopped I usually get my wallet out and put it on the dash.  I don't go for the registration and insurance card in the glove box.  The first thing I do is inform the officer.  The worst response I've had is "where is your firearm".  I tell the officer where and she responded, "if you have to go there, let me know first".  Most of the time we never got past me showing my license and I'd.

The worst thing I was ever stopped for was 92 in a 75.  Sounds bad but it's like 82 in a 65.  I drive the GSP often.  Many times the traffic is moving nicely at 80-85.  The trooper will stop the guy who has to do 90.

It’s absolutely true. It’s far more likely that non-LEO will encounter issues.

Okay, when I was working driving a Federally owned car with expired NJ registration and inspection, stopped a drunk driving checkpoint. I was told by a local police officer, "I'm going to tow this car".  I told him, bluntly, "You're not going to tow this car anywhere".

It didn't get towed and I went on my way.

Looking for opinions as to whether handing the police officer your carry license along with your DL, reg & insurance card during a traffic stop satisfies the "duty to inform" requirement. I've read advice from multiple sources (Ayoob...etc) to avoid using the word "gun" if informing verbally

Handing the cop your permit and notifying verbally covers covers all bases.

Many police are trained to warn other officers when they spot a firearm on someone to shout "gun".  Say firearm.  That's the word I use when I'm checking one in at the airport.

because as you know all too well, we are in a severely anti-gun state. most police i know don't think that the rest of us should be allowed to carry. some do, most don't.

i personally will inform if i get pulled over, once i've got my ccw permit

When a new law goes into effect police are  trained in regards to enforcing it.  Most cops are of the attitude tell me the new law and I'll abide by it.

Can anyone with a ccw in NJ provide an instance where they were jacked up by police because they were carrying with a ccw?  I'm not asking for a my bils cousin's next door neighbor's friend story.  I will take 2nd hand.

Finders keepers or does big brother have ownership

This is what I know about collecting meteorites.

In the US, if it lands on your land it's yours.  If it lands on someone else's land and you find it, it's between you and the landowner.  If it lands on Federal land, you are allowed to collect 10 pounds of meteorites a year.  Being they're mostly iron that's not a lot.

If that meteorite landed on private land the landowner can get some serious bucks selling it.

I'm not saying not to  if it's the law you're risking jail time if you dont. The question is what's the problem with it and I answered that.  In NJ handguns are illegal and there are certain exemptions which makes being in possession ok. This shifts the onerous to prove innocence  to you and not the state to prove guilt. This also means there is enough RS and PC to investigate the crime of being in possession of a handgun. Which you just admitted to by informing.  I understand the nuances of NJ law is of little concern and Texas might actually respect your rights and I'm happy for you but in NJ this is what we face and why duty to inform can be a problem.

People are under the impression that by being law abiding and telling the government everything  they want to know   means  interactions will always go well and that is far from true.

So if you inform and show the police your permit, what's the issue?

If you inform and show your permit there is no RS or PC.

  9. No quality firearm will go off in your holster.

I'd stay away from Glocks with 3 lb triggers for a carry gun, 1911s with the grip safety pinned and a few other guns.  If you're carrying for SD you need a round in the chamber in a semiautomatic.  If you don't feel comfortable with that learn to shoot a revolver.

  10. The hollow base is makes the wadcutter work so well.  If you roll your own ammo don't try to jack up velocity.  Driven  fast enough you can blow out the base and leave a ring of lead in the barrel giving you disastrous results.  Keep to target load velocities.

You will find people who reverse the bullet, loading it backwards so you have a huge hollowpoint.  When they work, they work well.  However, what happens often is the skirt of the hollow often breaks off and there is little, if any expansion.  I conducted my own tests long ago and was not impressed with the results.  Terminal ballistic performance is erratic.

  11. Factory wadcutters in a j frame are my preferred carry ammo over hollowpoints.

Reasons?  I've listed these before but will do it again.

    1.  The load is easy on your revolver and you.  Low recoil and muzzle blast.  Greater control for followup shots.

    2.  The bullet starts out in an efficient shape.  A hollowpoint has to expand a bit to get the way a wadcutter comes out of the barrel.

    3.  Adequate penetration.  A 2" 38 spl shooting a 148 gr hbwc will give about 16" of penetration in ballistic gel (as will a 32 acp or 32 long but that's another topic).  The reason is the hollow base keeps the bullet punching straight through because the weight is all forward. RNL, SWC, and JHP will all tend to tumble in the target because all the weight is in the rear of the bullet.

Reloads? I'll carry 158 SWC as it reloads easier Easier and gives similar terminal ballistics at the cost of a bit more recoil.

357s in a j frame are a waste IMO.  Penetration is about the same as comparable 38 spl loads.  You do get greater expansion at the cost of heavier recoil and muzzle blast.  My favorite load in a j frame 357 is Federal 147 gr 38 +p+.  Recoil is manageable, muzzle flash isn't bad, and I've chronoed it as just shy of 1000 fps from a 2".  Similar ballistics as a 147 gr 9mm. It's over 1000 fps or more in a 4" or longer 357 and much more controllable.

  12. If you want to see how fast someone can draw with a shirt covering their pistol watch the short You Tube video,

    https://m.youtube.com/results?sp=mAEA&search_query=miami+vice+jim+zubiena

BTW, the followup video about Zubiena is good to watch.  He went from hands up, draw, and fire 3 rds in 1.3 seconds although he admits is was with blanks.

I grant you his shirt was unbuttoned on the bottom.  However, I don't think most people could react as fast as he drew and shot.  At best they would have shot.one another.

Zubiena was an IPSC competitor and firearms consultant for "Miami Vice".  They used him for the role of the hit man in this episode.  When asked by the director why he cleared the pistol and locked the slide back before he placed it on the guy's chest. Zubiena responded,  "I never put down a weapon unless it's unloaded and clear".  That was good enough for the director.

Several other considerations if you use an ankle holster.  The only place to wear it is inside your weak side ankle.  You need to wear pants that allow you to easily pull the cuff up with your weak hand.  No tapered legs.  I've tried other guns but anything bigger than a J frame, biggest a G26 is cumbersome.  The only way to draw from an ankle holster, taking cover is the first thing you should do with any holster, is go into a kneeling position on your strong side,  pull up your pants leg with your weak hand and draw starting your shooting from the kneeling position if required.  If you don't have to shoot yet get to your feet.

I've seen people do all kinds of dancing around trying to draw from an ankle holster.  The method I described is the safest and most efficient IMO.

I used to make agents who wore an ankle holster use them during qualifications.  A few couldn't do it because and complained.  I told them don't wear an ankle holster.

Ankle holsters have their place.  Very convenient to draw from sitting in a car.  Not a place for your main battery unless that's your only choice.

    Little gunz can shoot.

Tho I haven't shot it in years, I could shoot 25 rounds out of a .25 ACP Raven; the very definition of "Saturday Night Special", into the circle of a standard NRA 25 yard target at 25 feet.  Never a misfire.

Not bad for a pistol that was originally a "promo" for a year's membership in a range.

The Raven is a great pistol imo.  Not super accurate like a Beretta. However a GTF off me gun.

  14. That's a take off on the Concealed Carry Act in NY.  Murphy has never has an original idea.  He tries to get away with whatever they do in NY.

Whilst I am a believer in personal property  rights I had an experience last month in NYC. I can carry under LEOSA in NY.  I can carry hollowpoints, 15 rd magazines just about anywhere.  If I carry into a store that doesn't have a "guns welcome here" sign, it's a felony.

Back to personal property rights.  Went to Radio City for the Christmas Show.  No gun as I know of no theater that allows it. My niece was PR manager for the Empire State Building 10 years ago.  Even then, NYPD wouldn't be allowed in armed unless they were on duty.

Back to Radio City.  I have a knife with a half inch cutting edge on my Keychain. The security guy acted like I had a bazooka!!! Called the supervisor. He reacted like I had a hand grenade. Asked me who I was with. Pointed to my companion.  Told me, "don't try anything".  Did he think I could possibly attempt a mass killing with a half inch blade?

I attempted to show him my retired ID to reassure him. He responded, "that won't do you any good here".

    I got in.

However the Christmas Show at Radio City is not what it used to be.  It was over 2 hrs with an intermission.  Now it's 90 minutes. They do the Rockettes, the bus, the Santa's and that's it. So instead of 2 shows a day they can do 4.
