  1. Only the fully automatic version is banned. The muzzle has a permanent recoil compensator on it.
  2. Hey guys! I bought a used Mini 14 awhile back and the current synthetic stock is not in the best of shape, so I'm looking to put a new one on. I'll probably go with a basic traditional type stock, but another type did catch my eye...Would this stock be okay here in NJ? Thanks guys!
  3. Hey guys! Quick question from a novice. I bought a used Mini-14 recently, but I'm looking to replace the synthetic stock it came with because it has a bunch of scratches on it. I've never really modified any of my guns before, so this is new territory for me. If I bought something like this (http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/23893-1.html), would I merely take out the screw in the middle of the stock, take the old stock off, slip the new stock on, and screw it back on...or is it more complicated than that? I also noticed there are Hogue stocks available for the Mini 14 (http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/87714-1.html) that don't even have a place for that screw in the middle of the stock, or at least don't look like they do from the pictures I've seen. Would they be installed in the same manner as the other stock? (If it makes any difference, the serial # of my Mini 14 is in the 186 range.) Thanks in advance - I really appreciate when you guys take the time to answer my n00b questions, haha.
  4. I absolutely love my Mini 14! I've been in love with Mini 14's for awhile, and I finally picked up a used one recently - it's a lot of fun to shoot! I've heard the "older models" such as mine have trouble with accuracy, but I haven't really seen any kind of big problem with it. I'm no sharpshooter by any means - quite the novice, in fact - but I can get a good pattern with the standard sights from 50-75 yards. There are lots of goodies available for Mini 14's out there too (stocks, accessories, etc.), so there are plenty of options for those who wish to dress up their Mini's. As far as ammo is concerned, I've been feeding mine Wolf and Brown Bear .223 ammo and haven't had any problems at all. I'd highly recommend getting one if you're interested!
  5. Just to clarify-by "public servants" I meant politicians - not LEO's. Sorry if anyone misunderstood me!!! Well said, KpdPipes.
  6. I've never been pulled over...I'm one of those people who gets nervous when they go 5mph over the limit, haha. But I will offer my :twocents-twocents: I'm not an expert on this stuff by any means - Lawyers and LEO's can feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. But, I do recall from my law and jurisprudence classes in college that an officer cannot search your car just because he has a hunch that you might have something in there that you're not supposed to. That wouldn't be probable cause. That'd be "mere suspicion", and the right to search a vehicle on mere suspicion is only granted on very rare occasions (border patrol checkpoints, for example). I'm not some nutjob who thinks we live in a totalitarian society or anything like that, but looking into issues and situations such as this always makes me realize that the 4th amendment has been violated and abused just as much as the 2nd amendment by our public servants and courts.
  7. You know cold, now that I think about it, the email I got from the VA State Police only said what would happen to the VA form - They didn't say anything about the federal form. What usually happens to the federal form once you walk out of the store?
  8. SO true. I can't believe people like this actually think they will get away with their illegal activity! There was another case like this down my way within the past year: http://www.state.nj.us/lps/njsp/news/pr081409.html I'm surprised Bryan Miller hasn't written a series of whiny newspaper articles about these guys yet.
  9. Yeah, you know, I'd just rather patronize the local shops from now on. I honestly didn't even know there were towns called East Hanover and Rockaway in New Jersey, haha! Then again, I guess some of you folks in Northern NJ wouldn't know of towns near me such as Ewan and Ferrell. Also, I edited my last post for spelling and ended up getting rid of a whole paragraph somehow, haha! I basically said aside from the bad experience at Dick's, I did have a good experience during my trip to VA to visit family/friends at the gun show in Roanoke. So, all is well - the next time someone has a question about buying long guns in VA, this thread will be there for 'em. In fact, here are a few good sites I've found pertaining to VA firearms laws: (VA State Police) - http://www.vsp.state.va.us/Firearms.shtm (Basic Overview of VA Gun Laws) - http://www.mc-leather.com/mcleather.asp ... arm+Basics (If you're attending a VA gun show) - http://www.showmasters.us/GeneralInform ... fault.aspx
  10. Yeah, I guess they were kinda the victim there...I still can't believe that happened though! I've gotta say - I'm SO thankful for this forum. Finding information such as this (out of state purchasing info, etc.) is so hard to come by - even on the NJSP website. I did so much research before I went down to VA regarding all of this, so I was completely baffled by the Dick's experience.
  11. Coldsolderjoint, I had no idea that crazy stuff happened at the Dick's in Woodbridge...and I can't believe they treated you like that, Urban Grunt!!! How awful! Well, any respect I had left for Dick's has certainly gone straight down the tubes after hearing these stories.
  12. I thought of the same thing - In fact, I asked the VA State Police about this whole situation via email, including what happens to the paperwork I filled out. Here's what they had to say: "You are correct that Virginia law does not prohibit the purchase or possession of a long gun by any resident of any other state. However, the Federal Gun Control Act allows the firearms dealer to sell or transfer rifles or shotguns to residents of other states if in compliance with the laws of their customer
  13. Thanks for the replies guys. I figured it was either a misguided group of Dick's employees or some sort of weird Dick's store policy, although it looks like before 2004, it was illegal for residents of states that did not border VA to purchase long guns in VA. This law was repealed by HB 1302 and the stroke of the Governor Warner's pen (http://www.nraila.org/Legislation/Read.aspx?id=1068). What's funny about that though is, the manager didn't even cite anything about residents of non-contiguous states not being allowed to buy guns in VA - he started spouting off about the ATF taking away their license if they sell to residents of states like New Jersey, California, New York, etc. (It truly made no sense, but at the moment, it made me worry that a friend of mine's VA long gun purchase was illegal!) If the manager was right, you'd think it would have been automatically denied when they ran my background check...then again, you'd think they would have told me I couldn't buy it the moment I pulled out a NJ driver's license!
  14. Hey guys. I had a bit of an issue today at a Dick's store in Northern Virginia. I was in the middle of buying a Ruger 10/22 rifle...filled out all the paperwork, presented my FID card, did the CoE, and passed the background check. At the end of the infamous Dick's "walk of shame" to the cashier kiosk, a manager informed me they were not allowed to sell guns to residents of NJ. The manager stated ATF could "take away their license" if they sold a rifle to a NJ resident. I promptly called Dick's in Deptford to see if that was merely a store policy or if NJ residents truly could not buy long guns in VA. The manager said I should have been able to buy it, but I didn't go back and make an issue out of it. I also called a Wal-Mart I am familiar with in VA, and the manager in the sporting goods department assured me that they were allowed to sell long guns to NJ residents. Anyone have any idea what the deal is here? I've always been told that as long as you have your FID and you fill out the CoE, you should be good to go out of state when it comes to long guns - I've read that here on the forums countless times. In fact, I know quite a few NJ residents who have had no problems buying long guns in other states, as I'm sure many of you have bought guns out of state, including VA. Is this merely a case of people not knowing the law, or is it really illegal for us to buy long guns in VA? Thanks!
  15. Dixon's looks like a neat place! I'll definitely have to stop there when I go up to Cabela's. Thanks for the good advice guys - Maybe I'll see you folks sometime this spring/summer at Fort Dix!
  16. Old School and coldsolderjoint...thank you SO MUCH for the info and advice. I truly appreciate it!!! I'm going to a gun show in Roanoke, VA next weekend and I'm gonna check and see if I can find a good deal on a new muzzleloader there. If nothing appealing catches my eye, I'll hit up Bob's and Butch's...maybe even make the trip up to Cabela's to see what they have to offer. Thanks again...I am REALLY looking forward to starting the adventure into black powder!
  17. Matt made a video. but in all honesty, I am waiting to hear someone respond. =P Hahaha! That was really nice of Matt to make a video - I'll have to check it out on youtube. I feel like I need more than a video to help me with that thing sometimes though...maybe something more along the lines of a magic wand Anyways, the whole black powder thing has been an obsession of mine for the past couple months or so, and I still feel like I know very little about the whole deal - hopefully a few kind folks on here will be able to offer their wisdom
  18. LOL!!!! You know Maks, you're probably right - I do try and get to the range at least twice a week, but I usually only bring my .22 rifle - lots of fun and cheap to shoot! Honestly, the only gun of mine that I don't have fun cleaning is my Ruger 22/45 pistol - that thing is a pain to take apart and get back together!!!
  19. Hey guys! I've been thinking about getting a black powder rifle for awhile now, and I think I'm going to take the plunge pretty soon and buy one...not necessarily for hunting, but for target shooting and to simply add another friend to my (growing) collection of guns. I've done a lot of research online regarding their design, how they operate, etc. But I'm quite confused about some things, and I was hoping you folks could point me in the right direction. (Sorry if I sound like a complete rookie at this...I truly am!) 1. Every time I log onto the Cabela's website to check out black powder rifles, a warning comes up about NJ residents buying black powder rifles. Are certain ones illegal that I should look out for if I decide to buy one out of state? 2. Is finding a place that sells black powder going to be a chore? 3. I noticed percussion caps are fairly expensive (on a poor grad student's budget, at least ) Would you folks say flintlocks are "cheaper" to shoot? 4. I've read a lot of people complaining about how hard and laborious black powder rifles are to clean. I'm the kind of person who enjoys cleaning my guns almost as much as shooting them, so that hasn't scared me off at all, but...are they really THAT hard to clean? 5. Flintlocks seem like a bit harder to shoot and maintain, judging from what I've read (Dealing with flints, cleaning, etc.). Are percussion rifles a better choice for the novice, or are flintlocks really not that hard to learn how to use and maintain? If you know of any resources (books, websites, etc.) that would help out a novice when it comes to learning how to use/maintain black powder rifles, I truly covet that info. Also, any recommendations on which black powder rifle I should get would be cool too! I'm really looking forward to getting into black powder, especially since the weather is starting to get nice, but I feel so in the dark when it comes to some of this stuff!--Sorry for asking so many questions!!! Thanks guys!
  20. Richwood here! (Exit 50B, Rt. 55)
  21. Go for it man! I wish I could be there, but I have class in Philly that night. I called Assemblywoman Oliver's office today and they encouraged me to let all my friends who felt the same way about AB 1384 know about the meeting next Tuesday, so I'm sure they are welcoming any type of input no matter how old/young you are! I've written to my Assemblymen and to Senator Sweeney as well...the more noise we make, the more they will have to listen. We can do this - YES WE CAN! :hope:
  22. I suppose it would, but you needn't worry, it will never happen here. Come on Chad!--That kind of attitude will get us nowhere! Remember J.P. from Angels in the Outfield? "It could happen!"
  23. It's amazing to see that one of the co-sponsors of this bill is a Democrat! Hopefully he convinces some of his D friends to support it. We should really raise our voices and make ourselves heard here. I just wrote letters to my state legislators urging them to support this - hopefully others do the same! Anyone else here from District 3? Senator Sweeney is, surprisingly, very pro-gun. I briefly talked with him at Colonial Diner right before he voted against the "one handgun a month" bill. If this thing goes to the Senate, I hope we have an ally in him.
  24. Sounds easy enough - Thanks Tony! My Dad was asking me about it earlier this evening, and I wasn't totally sure about Cheaper Than Dirt because I had read a post on here that said some sites make you fax them your FID card. So, I just wanted to make sure. Thanks again!
