I have 4 vehicles, only 2 have a "trunk" (actually, under seat storage. They're motorcycles).
I've never tried to transport to the range via a motorcycle. That probably deserves its own thread.
Anyway, when I transport to the range in a car, all firearms go in a lockable hard rifle case completely unloaded, without magazines, slides or bolt locked open and trigger locks on. Case gets locked.
Ammo goes in an ammo can.

That first bit is from Karl Denninger. He's a bit mercurial, but a real sharp guy when it comes to the financial markets. He called FNMA (Fannie Mae) going insolvent at least 6 months before the government bailed them out. He also saved me from taking a 50% hit last year when the markets crashed, because I got the eff out (and actually made money by going short).
I highly recommend reading his stuff if you're involved in investing at *all*. It's worth your while to go back through the archives on his site. He also mostly leaves politics out of it, which is refreshing. (he bashed both Bush and Obama).

Wish I had seen this before I bought my burris fastfire. Will make this a first stop for sights in the future.

1. How many magazines do you keep loaded, just incase? All of them.
I have 4 mags for my glock, all are kept loaded with HP ammo while at home. When I go to the range, they all get unloaded, then loaded back up after the gun comes back home.
2. How many rounds do you keep in the magazines?10 in the stock mags, 12 in the mags with extensions. Oh, and one in the chamber.
I was advised not keep keep 15 rds in my 15 rd magazine so i don't ruin the spring. Is this true or just specualtion? As long as the springs are good quality, it doesn't matter if you keep them loaded or unloaded.

Interested in this as well, mainly to get the GF some exposure to an AR.
Is there a signup or registration for this?

I emailed the local officer who processed applications about twice a month during my 6 month wait.
I was very courteous and polite in each email.
If I had not done the emailing, I would not have found out that my application was stuck waiting for additional funds ($#$* retroactive application fee increase by the state) or that my FID/permit had been "waiting" for me for over 2 weeks.
If they would let me, I would volunteer to help the police department process applications...

Welcome!

Considering it, but I think I have a prior obligation. Would be my first time at anything like this.

What the heck is this stuff?http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/store ... 00_425-4-2
I just ordered 10 boxes of it in FMJ because the bass pro site does not have it marked as being in low inventory and it is the same price per box that I pay for my American Eagle 9mm. Weird looking stuff but I will give it a shot.
Whatever it is, it's 9mm and it's FMJ and it will work in my Glock.
Ordered 15 boxes. That works out to about $.28/round delivered which is pretty darn good in the current ammo shortage.
Thanks for sharing remthewanderer!

That Natchezss price is ~50 cents a round. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?
That's more than double the .22 cents/round I paid when I ordered 1K rounds from Ammunition To Go about 3 months ago.

Will consider one of those mech tech units if I get a full frame glock.

Congrats. I think that is the first NJ FID application I have ever heard of that was processed in the legally specified time period.

Welcome fellow Morris County resident. You're welcome to come out to Shongum and shot USPSA with us. We also have a shotgun stages. Here is the link: http://www.shongum.org/activities/ipsc.html
Thanks for the invite colonel, I may actually take you up on that. Do I have to be a full member of Shongum to participate in USPSA?

Hrmm, neither of the 2 different retailers I bought firearms at since getting my FID card checked for a thumbprint, but I'm considering going back to the Police Station to get my thumbprint on it now.

How well is the firearm section at the Dick's in Rockaway stocked?
There's a Dick's a bit closer to me in East Hanover that has a very puny firearm section.

...Those glock invites were sent a long long time ago. =)Heh, you sent me the PM on glocktalk on 4/9, not *that* long ago.

I'd be happy if that range could be resurrected. Maybe the downturn in car sales is enough to put the kibosh on the dealer's plans? Haven't been that way in a long time, so I don't know if the building is still standing.

Tangent to this:
Went to the Gander Mountain store in upstate New York last October.
They would *not* sell me hollow point handgun ammunition, claiming it was illegal in NJ, but they *would* sell me a semi-auto shotgun with a pistol grip (illegal in NJ).
Thought it was interesting that they were (wrongly) restrictive on the ammunition, but would freely sell a NJ illegal firearm if I had decided to go through with the purchase.

I started my FID and Handgun Purchase Permit application in late '07, finally get it in 2Q '08, a little over 6 months if I recall correctly.
I'm a volunteer EMT in my town, so I had a bit of an 'in' with the police department.
Two main holdups were:
Several weeks *AFTER* the Police Department submitted my paperwork/fingerprints/money order, the State Police raised the fee and apparently made the increase retroactive to my applications. Even worse than that, they DID NOT NOTIFY the police department that this was the case. It took me calling the PD and them finally calling the SP to find out what was going on. 3 months wasted over a $6 fee increase, if I recall correctly.
It then took another 2 months for processing, and then it sat at the local PD for another month before I called again to find out the status and got the "Oh, we notified you X weeks ago that it was ready". Uh, no you didn't.
Anyway, when I went to pick up the FID and permit, they just handed them to me via the dispatcher "bank teller" window. Therefore my FID card does *NOT* have my thumbprint on it. Anyone else have a "blank" print block on their FID?

Hey All, I found this forum after receiving an invitation from Maksim via the glocktalk forums.
I'm relatively new to firearms, bought a glock 26 in 08 (after waiting 6 months for a FID/Handgun permit  ). Also into shotguns, have a Benelli M2 tactical and considering getting a pump gun as well. Would also like to get a revolver and some kind of semi-auto rifle when Obamamania dies down.
I'm interested in taking some training for both handgun and shotgun in the near future; been considering a trip out to gunsite to train with Ayoob but would also like to know what options are available around here.
I frequent the Bullet Hole range in Belleville but haven't been going as much since ammo got so scarce/expensive.
See ya on the forums.

This isn't statute, however it looks like the State Police consider a black powder handgun to be "a handgun":
