  1. IANAL, but, as I read it.......

If you look at the ATF 4999 worksheet...

    Section 1...

    question 2 asks...

"The weapon must have an overall length between 12 and 26 inches.

Weapon must meet both Prerequisites in order to proceed to Section II."

NJ others have a length over 26" as measured from the end of the barrel to the end of the buffer tube.

So..... Our "others" are not subject to these regulations.

  2. I want to start a new thread about that State Police letter that was circulating around yesterday.

I know the backstory about it and will share....

It was an email written by the State Police and sent to NJ police stations addressing phone call complaints the SP has been dealing with.

It was not meant to be released to the general public, hence the lack of proper press release "polish".

It could not be copy/pasted, so it was then re-typed by someone, someone who added in a lot of typos.

The author has confirmed that it is legit.

Up till now, retailers only had to log the sales, and the log was subject to inspection at the pleasure of the state.  Exactly what the new protocol means, no clue how and when the purchase data is submitted.  Maybe @dajonga can fill us in on the deets.

Basically the state has set it up so they don't have to go to the retailer to get sales data (electronically collect intelligence on US citizens).  They can now look it up in their ammo registry in Trenton.

We have heard nothing from the state concerning the ammo reporting. I will certainly keep yousguys in the loop when we learn what this will entail.

  4. I will add this.... I work at a gun shop with a shooting range. Yesterday, we rec'd over 2 dozen phone calls asking about quals for the new NJ CCW procedure. People were getting seriously angry with us because we could not provide any information.

    It was ridonkulous.

Please, do not call your local shooting range/gun shop about this. We have no information to give you.

    Welcome to the group.

I sell guns for a living, so I get asked this question often. If you are ever down in LEHT, come see me at Shooters Sporting Center.

$500 for a new gun is going to be tough if you want to stay with the top name-brand guns.

For new, full-sized, American guns with a manual safety?..... Ruger American, Ruger Security 9 are about the only options I can think of that are decent.

S&W M&P can be had with a manual safety, but you are pushing $600.

HK are generally more expensive guns, starting around $750 or so.

    Other guns with manual safeties... Beretta PX4, Beretta 92 series, Sig p320 M18 & M17, CZ75 series, HK P30 series, 1911 series.

Most gun makers have moved to away from manual safeties.

I would also not write off used guns. Most of my guns are bought used. Generally speaking, a used gun doesn't really hide any secrets...if it is beat up, it was used hard. If it looks like new, it was used very little. In my experience, the great majority of gun makers will fix busted guns, often at no charge to the consumer...even used guns. It costs them less to fix a gun to make it 100% than it would cost in fighting a lawsuit.

  7. I took my 2 boys on a road trip to Dayton 2 years ago. It is an excellent museum! The boys got to see the planes their grandfathers flew or worked on in the 1960's.

I also highly recommend the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum out at the airport... https://airandspace.si.edu/udvar-hazy-center

They have Space Shuttle Discovery, which you can walk around.... impressive to say the least. In my mind, I knew shuttles were big, but... holy cow....to stand under it is amazing.
