If they were it seems like they would have used the members lane. We were definitely lost in the shuffle and weren't the only ones complaining of the same thing. In any case I think the place is awesome and I had a great time. Perhaps I just caught the counter on an off day.

Just a follow up (a year later). This place has gotten even better. They have upgraded their facilities and the difference is substantial. Its now on par with or better than the best places I have shot. The additions for members seem to be outstanding. Staff at the gun counters are still friendly and knowledgeable. If there was one knock on the visit it was the folks behind the counter to get out on the range. The place was relatively busy but they didn't seem to have any type of system for getting people in and out efficiently. Several people who came in after us got out on the range before we did and they didn't call our names until we went up and reminded them we were waiting. This happened to a couple of folks while we were there. Throwing in a "thank you" or a "have a nice day" wouldn't be bad either. A little customer service never hurts. Save for the little hiccup getting out on the range I had a great time. Its still a little pricey but you get what you pay for. I'll probably look into joining as I'm getting out there a little more often.

Ill join if I ever get an FID but until then the $20 won't kill me. I'll bring my own ammo and a pack of see-mores so I only really need a couple of targets.

Finally got out to RTSP. Great experience from the time i walked in the door. Got there around 10:30 and saw a bunch of cars out front so I thought I might have to come back another time. Turns out there was some class going on. The counter staff were friendly and the wait was around a half hour. Didn't particularly care for some of the items in their range paperwork, but i imagine you need to do what you have to do in order to protect yourself if you choose to open a range in NJ. The picture thing was awkward but, whatever. The range was comfortable, well lit and ventilated. The equiptment was modern and in good repair. The range officer was OUTSTANDING. Only downside seemed to be the prices. Again im sure they have to do what they have to in order to keep the lights on. I shot my own stuff so it wasn't a huge issue for me. In any case I'll definitely be back.

looks like nowhere. he lives in orange county but from the looks of things it dosen't sound like this trip is ever going to happen. he has a NY permit and obviously i dont. i should have mentioned that i was talking about handguns.

Wanted to search before I ask but I'm not sure how to word it to get all the results I need. Basically I want to go shoot with my brother in NY. Am I ok to drive from NJ to a range in NY to shoot?

just in case anyone searches this topic and winds up reading this thread, the process was painless and the shipment arrived undamaged. curious that they make such a big deal out of the packaging an labeling and then just leave the box in front of my garage? none the less they delivered it, no problem.

In hindsight I probably should have not included the name of your business in my query. I agree that your employee should not be fired or disciplined. She is not a lawyer (im guessing) and it is not her responsibility to have the statutes memorized or to help me understand them. She did however seem very confident in the information she gave me and I assumed (incorrectly obviously) that when she put me on hold she went and verified it. In the end the original information she gave me was incorrect as was the follow-up which was why I came here looking for further clarification. Again, my apologies.

Been through the ones I could find many times. They seem poorly written and are very confusing. My personal opinion with the information I had was that I was well within the law. Thanks.

Thanks folks, I was fairly confident in the information I got from the NJSP but have to admit the old poopshoot tightened up a bit while I was talking to this young lady. Last thing I want to do is end up in jail via my own ignorance. Thanks again.

I thought I was getting a handle on the maze of NJ gun laws. That was until I called RTSP here in northern NJ about shooting at their facility today. I was told a couple of things buy the young lady that answered the phone that were in direct conflict with what was my understanding and what I was told when I called the NJSP. Originally I just asked her if an FID was required to shoot at the range. She told me no but I would need one to buy any ammunition. I said that i would be shooting my own guns and ammo so I should be ok? She then said that I would be ok at the range but id need need an FID to get the guns to the range and that i needed to register my guns. I told her that I moved here from california where I purchased the guns legally and was not aware of any law that I had to register them. She said that if I was now a resident of the state of NJ and no longer had an address in CA that I had to register my guns in NJ. I told her that what she was telling me was in conflict with the information I had gotten from the state police both before and after I moved to NJ just three months ago. I asked again if she was sure and she asked me to hold. When she came back to the phone she told me that I was fine having the guns but needed an FID to transport them to the range. I lived here 6 years ago and back then none of this was the case. I shot regularly at the Bullet Hole in northern jersey with no issue (other than at times the staff were less than friendly). It seems everything has changed since I've been gone. Can someone either clarify or point me in the right direction so that I can clear things up for myself? I'm leaning towards just going with the info from the NJSP but I just want to be sure im inside the lines here. Thanks.

Just as a follow up. The move went relatively smoothly. There was a small hiccup with the TSA at the San Jose Airport in that they do now take your key and open your case outside of your presence if your bag is red flagged or "alarms" once it is checked. Your options are to give the key to the agent who takes it to the TSA screening room or settle for having your bag not loaded on the plane. I raised hell but in the end I needed to get on the plane so I gave in. A review of the TSA website coupled with a call to the TSA proved me wrong so I guess the policy changed since I last flew. In any case the guns arrived without further incident (other than being stuck on the conveyer at the Newark airport) and the ticket agent refunded my over weight fee in San Jose to calm me down. Ammo shipped UPS came 5 days later. I was surprised they just left the boxes in front of my garage but it's a good neighborhood so all is well. Thanks to everyone for the tips. also: In case anyone does the same as I when packing their guns, what caused the "alarm" we're stuffed socks that I put in the case to keep stuff from rubbing together if the case is handled by a gorilla. Evidently they resemble drugs on the monitor. Go figure I guess?

If you did shoot you would most likely end up dead. I would hope I'd wait and ID the target but who knows what I would actually do. I would hate to shoot a bad 10 year old kid that got a hold of his daddy's chainsaw as much as I'd hate to shoot a cop that was trying to do his job (even if he was doing it poorly).

Not sure what you mean. Ive bought a gun in NJ and 2 in CA. it is was far more difficult NJ. Read the manual, take the quiz, get your card, fill out your paperwork, pay your money, comeback in 10 days demonstrate your ability to handle a firearm (that usually means taking the quiz again) pick up your gun. Wait 30 days and do it again. Sounds like a lot of hoops but its a relatively simple process and it all happens at the store with people who actually want you to have the gun. Point is if I walk into a store today, 10 days from today I walk out with my gun (barring any issue with the background check). Heck, some stores that have ranges will even let you come in and shoot your gun while you wait for your 10 days to pass. As far as CCW goes, there are counties out here that actually issue them like they are supposed to. I dont believe the same is true in NJ. You are right about them both sucking though. When I lived in VA I used to complain about waiting 20 minutes for my background check. (Edit) You may have meant in terms of variety? If that was your point you are absolutely right. Just happens that every gun I've ever wanted is on "the list". I could see if I was a colector looking for a specific model not liking it here much.

Having lived in both states for at least 5 years I still maintain that California is only worse on paper.

Yeah, the first 33lbs is sunk cost since we are flying anyway. US Air allows11lbs per passenger so both to save some on shipping and to avoid detox from not being able to shoot while I wait for my shipment I'll just bring some with me. I'll check that and the guns. As long as it dosen't push our bags overweight there shouldn't be any extra cost. Thanks.

So I'm moving to NJ from California and I'm trying to figure something out. I've done a search but can't seem to find an answer to my specific question here on the forum. Since I am limited by the airlines to 33lbs of ammunition I thought about shipping the rest of my stash to myself in NJ. So the plan is to ship it UPS a couple days before I fly out and then receive it at my new place in NJ. Anyone see any issues?

I thought so as well with the low-cap mags and bullet buttons and the "approved list" but nope. Moved from Jersey to Cali and now headed back to Jersey. Jersey is way worse even if at first glance it may not seem so. Fewer hoops to jump through when buying, less hassle when transporting, no hollow point stigma. Cali is a bad dream but Jersey is a nightmare.

"any handgun bought in NJ" is not what I had issue with. The website says "State Law requires the registration of firearms of any type."
