  1. Is the issue that NJ considers possession an illegal transfer? Not trying to be a wise guy, it just never occurred to me that this would be an issue.
  2. Can someone quote the section of the statute that specifies someone with an FID can't transport a handgun owned by someone else? I have searched and can't find it. I have never seen ownership specified in any of the exceptions.
  3. Thanks for the mostly helpful feedback. I don't see how this is ratting out my friend. His position was that since it was a .22, it was allowed. He wasn't saying "F- the law, I'm going to do what I want." I wasn't sure if worst case was a slap in the wrist type punishment or unlawful possession, as was mentioned. To me, this post is very informative and hopefully will help other people too. Even if we don't agree with the law, isn't it in everyone's best interest to make sure we're following it? If that's not thinking things through, then I apologize.
  4. I have a friend who continues to shoot his .22 pistol at one of the WMA ranges. I told him many times that it isn't allowed, but since "no one has bothered him" he continues to do it and doesn't see a problem with it. I've tried to persuade him to stop, but he continues. Does anyone know what the penalty is if he gets caught? I'm hoping if he knows what's at stake he might stop shooting his pistol there.
  5. Thank you... this is exactly what I was looking for but I couldn't find it!
  6. I need a pad or riser to raise my cheek on my Mossberg 500 when I'm shooting slugs and using a scope. I know Mossberg sells a version of the 500 that comes with stock with an adjustable comb on it, but I can't find the stock by itself anywhere. Can anyone recommend a good cheek pad for use with a slug gun? I want something the fits well and is secure. Also, I want something that is removable so I can take it off when I'm using the bird barrel.
  7. Both of my other long guns have iron sights. I'm decent with them, but I only shoot targets with them. If I miss on those, it's no big deal. I think I'm leaning towards a scope. Here's another question: since the reciever on the 500 is already drilled and tapped for ring mounts, should I use that or is there an advantage to the cantilever mount?
  8. Just thought I'd let you all know that I managed to get it on last night. Pinned, welded, and NJ legal. Did all of the compliance work myself. It was a budget build otherwise I never would have had the confidence to take a drill and grinder to it, but I must say I'm happy with the way it turned out. Probably the best $450 I've ever spent.

    S&W SD9 VE

The S&W SD9VE and the Ruger SR9 were both on my list, but I went with the Ruger P95 over both of them. It just felt better in my hand and I like the trigger better. It's out of production, but there are quite a few new old stock to be found. I paid about $300 for mine. If I had the money I would have gone with the M&P.
  10. OK, thanks for the advice. I only need to get it to go another 1/8 turn so maybe grinding it is the way to go.
  11. I'm using the Calvary Comp (http://www.brownells.com/rifle-parts/barrel-parts/compensators/223-cav-comp-sku100000189-1464-5604.aspx) which already has a hole drilled in it for the pin. My plan was to index it, mark the barrel, remove it, and then just dimple the threads enough so that the pin won't let it turn. So I still need some sort of washer? If so, does anyone know of a local shop in the Summit/Livingston area that would have peel washers and/or crush washers? I really should have ordered one when I bought the comp, but it slipped my mind.
  12. I need to finish the compliance work on my barrel before I bring my lower home and I've run into a problem with the crush washer. The barrel came with a flash hider which I have removed, but I can't get the comp to index properly with the old (already crushed) crush washer. Here's my question: do I even need a crush washer if I'll be pinning and welding the comp? What's the better course of action - leave out the crush washer or order a new one? If I need to order a new one, I'll have to hold off on bringing my lower home (which I planned to do this weekend). I'm getting anxious to shoot this thing and had just about convinced myself I didn't need the crush washer, but figured it best to ask before I drill into the threads on my barrel. Thanks in advance!
  13. Haha! Thanks for the laugh... but seriously, any suggestions?
  14. I'm looking for some new reading material and am curious what everyone's favorite hunting/outdoor magazines are. Fairly new to hunting but have been fishing all my life. So... what are your favorite magazines and which are most applicable to a NJ hunter (eg. non-rifle)? Thanks in advance.
  15. Looking for a rifled deer barrel for my Mossberg 500. I'd be interested to know which people prefer and why... the one with rifle sights or the cantilevered barrel with the scope mount. I haven't shot either one of them. So far I've only used this gun for skeet, but was hoping to be able to put it to use during deer season. Will mostly be using it in the woods, so probably not much more than 50 yards if that. I'm torn between the simplicity of the iron sights and the accuracy of the scope mount. Thanks in advance.
  16. Never been to Flatbrook, but in Clinton you can basically use whatever you want. There is nothing there but a dirt mound so you have to bring something with you to hang your targets on. The first couple of times I went I used a cheap target stand I bough at walmart, but after that I made my own out of some rebar and scrap lumber. Most other people I've seen there use a homemade stand as well. Just make sure you take everything with you when you leave. I always try to clean up other peoples mess as best I can, too.
  17. Great, thanks guys. I've been there many times but never knew that. I learned something new today!
  18. I've been to Clinton WMA numerous times to sheet .22's and skeet. I need to find a place to zero my scope for slugs. I pulled up the WMA rules (http://www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/ranges.htm) and it seems that buckshot and slugs are allowed on the muzzleloader/rifle range. That's news to me... I never noticed that before. Can anyone confirm that? I can't remember what the posted signs on the range say. Thanks in advance.
  19. I bought an upper from them about a month ago. The website said shipping times were 14+ days, but it arrived in 10 days. I was expecting them to be slow, but I got my order quicker than expected and I never had to contact them. When I've emailed them with questions previously it usually took 2-3 days to get a response. Certainly not the fastest but I was OK with it.
  20. I just recently moved to the Fairfield area. I'm looking for a local spot to go fishing with the kids. I drive over/past the Passaic River almost every day, but haven't found a place to access it. Anyone know of a place to do so? Or maybe another place that's good to take kids? I grew up fishing Round Valley, Spruce Run, and the South Branch in Hunterdon County. I've taken the kids a few times, but it's just to far to travel when the kids get bored after an hour or so anyway. Thanks in advance!

    Favorite Mags

Thanks for all the input. No build thread yet. I won't be doing any run and guns for now... just range and HD. I just got my stripped lower last week and I'm still waiting for my parts kit and upper to come in. I'm going with a budget build... mostly PSA components. I'm at $510 so far (not including FFL) but I still have to buy mags and a rear sight. My goal was to do it for under $600 and I think I'll be close. I'll start a thread once I get all of the parts.

    Favorite Mags

Thanks. I tried to check out PK90's site before, but it was down. I'll have to check back later. Without any experience, I'm having a hard time deciding between the 15/20 or 15/30.
  23. Just wondering what peoples preferences are. I finally ordered most of my parts and will be starting my first build soon , I just need to order some mags. I was thinking of going with these from MidwestPX, but am open to other options also. Honestly, I was thinking about these because they are the cheapest. Are these good or is there a good reason to spend a little more $$$ on one of the others? http://midwestpx.com/product_info.php?products_id=356
  24. The best price I've seen for an M&P15 is about $700 out the door. Know where I can get one cheaper? I think I can keep this build under that, plus I get the experience and enjoyment of building it myself. Not trying to argue, but that's my thinking. Prices are higher now, which is frustrating... but based on today's prices the kit saves me about $40 over what you bought. I've read that the Freedom kit is supposed to be slightly higher quality than PTAC too, but I have no idea if that's true or not. I might wait and see what else pops up... just can't make up my mind. I'm hoping there will be some good Memorial Day sales.
  25. Anyone have any thoughts on this? http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/ar-15-05/rifle-kits/psa-16-m4-1-7-freedom-rifle-kit.html It looks like it's a new product and there aren't any reviews yet. Anything stand out as a plus or minus with this?
