  1. Sorry for so many questions BUT since my accident, I have to wear glasses to see correctly. Will these meet the need of eye protection? What do guys who wear glasses do? Also, I saw a laser round that I can insert in my 9mm. Similar to what I used to sight new optics on my AR. It shoots to a special "laser target". Kind of expensive. Did anybody ever use anything like this?
  2. Hey, here's another question. My 9mm is kind of heavy. Especially since I'd now be only shooting with one hand. It's all metal. I've been looking into some of the "compacts" out there using more composites/plastic. Ie the Ruger American. What do you guys think/recommend? At this point I'm not into impressing with the size of my handgun. What's involved with exchanging my current handgun? Do I have to go through the whole permitting process again? Thanks.
  3. Thanks all for the advice, support and good wishes! Actually the range master at my home range (SOuth Jersey shooting club) offered to give me some pointers. Yea, it's like I had a stroke...I'm weak on the whole right side. I guess it's getting better for at first, I couldn't use that side at all! And fishnet..YES, wear a helmet! Even though I WAS wearing one. I plan to get to the range when it gets a bit warmer ( it's outdoors). I used to shoot a 9mm as well as multiple long guns. Meanwhile I'm still going to look into what I can use in the yard. Another toy??
  4. Hey all. I used to go to the range 1-2 times per week. I had a bad snowboarding accident about 2 years ago. I was diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury and a right brachial plexus injury. Suffice it to say, I am very weak/pins & needles on my right (dominant) side. All of my problems are physical....not mental. I want to learn to shoot (handgun) with my left hand. I got a "toy" that I use in my basement. Shoots a laser of sorts at the target. A toy shooting gallery. I've gotten pretty good from about 20 feet. I'd like to practice in the yard where its too bright for the toy. Was thinking about a pellet or BB gun. I think in good ole NJ, I need a permit to purchase a pellet/BB handgun. Any suggestions? When I get good/confident enough, I'll go back to the range. Thanks.
  5. I was able to slowly rack the gun today. I think I'm going to try the "handi-racker" for now. Thanks all!
  6. Thanks all! I will look into all options. Like someone mentioned, my difficulty is with racking the slide. I presently/used to shoot a P89 Ruger 9mm As well as a Wyndam Weaponry AR 15. But that's going to have to wait for now!
  7. Hi all. I suffered a right shoulder injury last year and my right arm is very weak. I'm going to have to learn how to shoot with my left hand. I presently have a 9mm semi-automatic. It is a little difficult to load/get a bullet in the chamber. Should I look at/consider a revolver? Will this be easier to load/charge? Thanks for any advice.
  8. Here's something I read today pertaining to the woman from PA....a mother of 2 or 3 children who had a legal permit to carry in PA and was stopped and arrested in Jersey and is facing jail time. FYI. I hope you can open it. Senators to Propose Looser Guidelines for Judges After Philadelphia Woman Faces Jail Time for Bringi.html
  9. Hey, I was just wondering a bit more about the issue you had w/ the tactical rifle class?? I'm not really sure from the emails. I'm booked to take the class at Shooters the end of this month w/ Kkk.. I booked through the range/store. I'm supposed to arrive a bit early to fill out paperwork, etc. THEN an orientation of sorts to the range, etc. is supposed to be a part of the class. I'm hoping all will run smooth....
  10. Hey, I hope this isn't a hijack of this thread BUT I did want to mention that there is a Tactical Rifle 1 class being offered at Shooters for the end of June. Taught by Kharis Sepulveda. You have to go to Shooters website to find out about it and CALL in w/ your credit card/reg. info. Only difference I see is that at the beginning of this thread, the class was described as a 7 hr class. On the Shooters site, the class is listed at about 4 hrs.?? There were 6 spots open total (I took one)
  11. I did hear back (email) from Kharis re: Tactical 1 at Shooters on 6/28. He did say that he is planning on having this class. I noted to him that there is no mention of it on his website (in the calendar section) although you can add the Tactical 1 to "your cart" and pay for it. I'm not going to shell out $160 until I find out that this is definitely a go or not. If some of you are interested, you should shoot him an email also.
  12. Being interested in the Tactical "1" class, I looked on Kharis' website but didn't see the offering (on 6/28). I shot off an email inquiring as to the offering/availability of this class. Hopefully it would be easy to get 6 people to sign up (BTW, I'm an "ex" private pilot also...no longer current). Did some training in aerobatics back in the day!
  13. I'm interested in tactical 1 also. Had to miss the previous one
  14. You know, I don't really know. With the 3x magnification, the body of the dot fills up the bullseye SO I guess I would have to say both ESPECIALLY when I am trying to pop off a few more rapid fire. I just try to not get distracted by the "tail". But here's another question. When you're shooting through magnification, do you still keep your other eye open? I've tried it both ways and it's a little "off" seeing the magnified image w/ one eye and the non-mag'd image down range w/ the other. I think that this would only get increasingly worst w/ increased magnification
  15. An update: I got the 3X magnifier (Vortex VMX-3t) and have been to the range twice with it. I think it's great. THe mount appears to be very solid and locked in to position (not wobbling around). I agree that as you get more magnification, your red dot enlarges and distorts (comet tail affect) BUT It seems if I keep the body of the dot on target...I do pretty well. Being a relatively newer shooter at the range, I was quite happy with my accuracy and groupings from 100-200yds with this set-up.
  16. I just purchased 6" and 10" steel "gong" targets. Rather than shooting paper and checking for my groupings every fourth round or so, I thought it would be fun to shoot steel in a more "rapid fire" mode AND just see how well I hit a 6" or 10" target. I've read a bit about the issue of ricocheting rounds. My range allows shooting steel target on the 50yd and longer ranges AS LONG AS the target swings freely (I would attach the target via the "ears" to a hanging wire..it would swing freely). I've read not to shoot steel at less than 100yd. Any advice here? I don't want to risk myself or anyone else if this isn't a good idea (although I don't think the range would allow it if it were a problem). I was planning on hanging the 6" at 50 and maybe 100yds, and the 10" at 100yds and out. Thanks.. Oh, by the way I'm shooting an Ar15 style carbine...5.56 rounds.
  17. Vlad, thanks. That's about what I'm looking to do at this point too. If shooting for closer groupings beyond 100+ yds, I'll go the scope route. And checko, point about magnification of the dot is well taken.
  18. Anybody have any thoughts on magnification? 3x? Why not go 5x? Why not variable? I see a 2-5x red dot magnifier? Is 3x a good all around magnification? I see most red dot magnifiers offered in this.
  19. Yea, I was looking at the Vortex 3x. The "newer" VMX-3T. So the "included" mount that you have to press the button to flip it to the side is the crappy one?
  20. Hey guys, relatively new to NJGF AND getting back into shooting. Have been at the range a handful of times w/ my new(er) WW MPC15. Began shooting through my iron sites. I also then placed a Vortex strikefire red dot. Now as I'm beginning to shoot out at greater distances (100 yd +), I've been thinking about a magnifier. My strikefire came w/ a 2x magnifier that screws onto the eyepiece. I've been looking at anywhere from 3x to 5x OR variable (2-5x) magnifiers w/ flip to side mounts. Any recommendations? I don't want to drop over $300 on one of these (prefer 100-200 range). I will probably get a holographic site in the future (Eotech). What should/shouldn't I look for in a magnifier? I like the idea of variable BUT are these problematic? Thanks.
  21. Hey everyone, I'be been perusing this forum and decided to take the plunge! Have been getting back into the shooting arts. I used to hunt a lot w/ my dad. He passed away 3 yrs ago and I came into possession of his firearms. I myself have had a handgun for about the last 10 yrs and have periodically gotten to an indoor range to shoot. After getting my dads guns, I've been getting the itch to shoot again. I've sold/traded in a couple of his shotguns AND have taken possession of a new AR style weapon. Lots of fun! I also want to get my dad's 30.06 out to the range.
  22. Just getting back into shooting...joining SJSC. Please keep me updated if another of these courses is offered in 2014.
