On the off chance anyone cares, I'm picking up the last Ruger American Ranch in 5.56 that they have. Now I just need to get a scope for it because I don't think my red dot/3X magnifier won't do it at longer ranges.

I've noticed their prices are slightly higher but they seem to have the biggest selection around. Those are not the best prices but not bad. If you like what you see buy it and don't worry about the 25 or 50 dollars you could save.
I say this with the opinion that Shooters is usually overpriced IMO.

I know they make you sign a mental health release. Do they need to talk to your primary doctor? Where exactly do they get these records from and how much is in them? The problem is I currently am prescribed medication to take for social anxiety, day to day stress, and to sleep and I also see a psychologist because I was in bad relationships. It's confusing because on the question because the way it's worded I don't know if they ask about stuff like that or only if I've been to a mental hospital, which I certainly haven't. Do they want to check out the other people that live in your household also?
No, they don't talk to your GP. How would they even know who they were? There's no database of such a thing for the police to search. Same with therapists. Unless you've been court ordered to a mental institution, there's no record for them to find.
No, they don't talk to people you live with (Which is scary because they should tbh). They ask for two references and that's it.

I was thinking of going to Shooters tomorrow to actually check out some of the Rugers in person. They have a Ruger American in .223 18" for $439.99 or the Ruger American Ranch in 5.56 for $477.99.

I'm competitive with myself. And I honestly don't know where I'd be allowed to shoot more than a few hundred yards around here.
Looks like Cumberland Riflemen has a 600 yard range but they aren't accepting new members. Hutton Hill has a 300 yard range. Only 3 guest visits before you must become a member. Range 129 will open eventually with a 100 yard indoor range. Shooters is 100 yards I think.

I think I might go with the Ruger American. Is the Crossfire II good enough to go with or should I just get my own?
-
I like the look of the Ruger American.
I'm getting the feeling from everyone I talk to I might as well just got with the .308 instead.

CDNN has them for $849.00 right now: https://www.cdnnsports.com/rugerr-precision-rifle-556-hybrid-mb-gen-2.html?___SID=U#.W80dNRNKjUI
These are excellent guns and you can easily upgrade them since there's a lot of aftermarket support. Oh, and you'd have the option of shooting .233 or 5.56 out of it.
Interesting, it looks tacticool but still bolt action. Picatinny rail for pretty much any scope.

Busy week so I didn't get to think about this much, but I'm open to suggestions on .223 bolt-action rifles for precision shooting. Remington and Savage make some cheaper ones that get good reviews (though the ones that come with scopes, every comment seems to be about how shitty the stock scope is).

This kind of stuff makes me cringe. People being reckless with something deadly is scary as hell. People taking selfies doing dumb stuff at the range, using phones while driving, etc. Danger to society.

Is it to practice longer-range / precision or could it be a SHTF rifle? If it is the first I’d maybe consider a 223 bolt action. If the second, go semi-auto in 556. A custom bolt action that can shoot both may end up costing more then you’re willing to spend.
Well, I mean ideally I'd have a variety of SHTF guns. My .22s are good for general, cheap practice but not as practical. But eventually I want to have a semi-auto rifle, a precision rifle, and a handgun for the SHTF. Can't always be super picky about ammo when in emergencies.
9 hours ago, GRIZ said:I've been looking at a Ruger American Ranch in 5.56. 1 in 8 twist will stabilize heavier bullets, 1 to 2" accuracy at 100 yd, takes AR magazines, and available for about $400 are all plus factors AFAIC. Add a half way decent scope and it's pretty hard to beat the value.
$400? Where do I need to be looking to find these prices? Certainly not at the ranges. MSRP has it at like $530.

Yea, I've noticed finding a suitable .223 would be easy. But I was under the impression that 5.56 should not be used in a .223 due to the slight difference in size. And in an emergency where ammo is severely limited, being able to use both would be ideal. Is there a reason it has to be 5.56 instead of .223? Both have the same advantages you list over 7.62. Bolt action’s in 223 are a lot easier to find.Sent from my SM-G965U using Tapatalk

So, I want to add a bigger caliber rifle for longer distance precision shooting and I'm thinking a bolt action would be a lot of fun. Not that I have brand loyalty yet but S&W doesn't have any in 5.56. I like 5.56 over 7.62 because they are lighter and you can carry a lot more easier. Just more practical.
I was thinking maybe a Remington but they only do .223 not 5.56. And you shan't load a 5.56 in a .223. Any suggestions on makes/models of bolt actions that are 5.56?

From what I can tell, a general threat such as "druggies want drugs from me because I'm a doctor" won't hold up at all. It has to be a specific threat. And since domestic violence victims can't even get a ccw against someone threatening to kill them and probably will, no way "some druggie might kill me" will get approved. Politicians want it so they are the only ones to be defended. They don't care about the people.

I mean, I got my card this year and it's still yellow and white. It shouldn't be an issue.Hmm...interesting. The front of the NJ FID has been yellow and the back white since at least the 70s. There is not enough room to roll most thumbprints on the back in the space provided that's why it's a press. I'd hazard a guess that Cabelas in DE has sold thousands of guns to NJ residents with these IDs since it opened.
Let us know how this works out.

"The means was a homemade bomb made of two legally obtainable chemicals."
Could be a number of things. Can't find what they were but to do the damage he did, it had to be a legit cocktail.

Hand guns is an entirely different breed of cat, drills etc
a robot can shoot a fire arm to the best accuracy the weapon can achieve.. we are practicing robot repeatability. Practicing good technique to perfection makes permanent ( @High Exposure )
How are shooting currently? Benchrest? Bipod? Willy nilly?
25 yards. Sitting. Using a benchrest.
Right now, sometimes I stand, sometimes I sit. Standing, I'll shoot either with or without the 3X scope. Sitting, I have my arm resting on the edge of the bench to keep it steady.

Yea I've thought about it. Then I could get into clay shooting too. I've heard a lot about Remington .22 ammo being dirty as hell when I was researching ammo. The CCI mini mags work real well and I just clean my rifle/pistol when I get home. Never been too troublesome even after a couple hundred rounds.GD, you may wish to consider obtaining a NJ Hunting License. You can then should your 15/22 at the various Wildlife Management Area ranges. I usually shoot at Collier-Mills WMA near Jackson. Outdoors out to 100 yards.
With my bolt action 22 with a scope, the best results I acheived were with CCI Green Tag ammo. Expensive but worth it once in a while when shooting for accuracy. As I recall I shot 1 MOA groups with it several times from a bench rest. 1/2 inch at 50 yards.
Lastly, I have mostly shot CCI Minimag and CCI AR Tactical through my 15/22. In a recent trip to the range, I shot 100 Remington Std Velocity round nose through it and experienced the worst build up of lead in my barrel that I ever encountered. So much so that I had trouble getting a cleaning patch or brush down the barrel. Had a hell of a time getting the barrel clean.(a story for another thread). So for me I will stick with the above CCI going forward.

I might just have to take you up on that. Sounds fun.Not bad.
If you ever want to try out longer distance shooting, hit me up. I have membership at Range 14 and will soon have membership at Quinton. It's probably a bit far but id be heading out from Glassboro and Quinton is down in Salem Township. Can carpool with me. They go out to 200 yards, outdoors. I'm not the best shot myself, so don't be concerned about embarrassing yourself. Odds are you're a better shot than me. I just enjoy it.. lol

I use mini mags 40gr myself.I use to get patterns like that using Federal .22s. But at 75 yds. I use only CCI mini mags now. Don't expect much from a .22 past 75yds unless you're gonna get a better rifle. And not with a RDS

Local DA says that the "perpetrator" was among the three killed. I'm going to go ahead and say it wasn't the 2 year old. I'm very curious as to what happened. That's a lot of damage. Rolling meth lab? The fact that they are saying one of the victims was the perp makes me think the explosion part was an accident but the person responsible was still doing something illegal.

Fun watching the improvement over time. First pic is when I first got the rifle (M&P 15-22), second is from yesterday. Both are at 25 yards. Groupings definitely tightening up. Not rushing shots as much, a little more focus on breathing. Looks like I need to adjust my red dot a little bit to the right and maybe a smidge up.
Still really want to go somewhere with a longer range. Can't wait for Range 129 to open up with their 100 yard indoor range.
Slightly more embarrassing, my last trip where I shot my Walther P22. 10 yards and 7 yards. Definitely needs a lot of work.
Are there any one-on-one instructor programs in Southeastern NJ? As much as I nerd out about everything and can figure out a lot of stuff from video and reading, sometimes you just need that in-person help.

Which means they are LEGAL inside your home until December 13th
No they are not. We just have a 180 day grace period where they are not enforcing the law to give people a chance to be in compliance with the law.

5.56 bolt actions?

That was along my line of thinking. I don't need something that is like 20X, will have adjustments that will move my aim 1mm at 500 yards, etc.
