  1. The BTU available starts to drop precipitously below 20 degrees. Just google "propane tank vaporization rate". Determine what your generator uses and make your decision. Most of these propane grill tanks probably cannot produce enough BTU at 0 degrees for any generator over about 4000 watt. Here's a link. There are tons of them https://motorsnorkel.com/propane-consumption-rate/ I will only say that bad storms do not tend to occur when it is super cold. It's usually ice storms and hurricanes which knock out power. Hurricanes are in the fall when it rarely drops under 50, ice storms tend to be right at 32. Heavy wet snow storms also occur in the early fall, right around freezing temp. In over 18 years of having generators, I've never needed one any colder than 25 degrees.
  2. The hardware store in Florida NY, Werners will fill it. Cheap too. Regular tanks are $10.
  3. There is a different issue that is perhaps more important. The amount of LP vapor available to burn depends on the temperature and how full the tank is. What works at 80F may or may not work at 0F. I did the math and my 14kw whole house will start starving if my 500 gallon tank is below 17% and the ambient temp is less than 20 degrees. What it means to me is that if my main tank starts getting low and it is really cold out is that I have to really cut the genset usage to the absolute minimum. In a do-over I'd have gotten a 1000 gallon tank.
  4. Probably. I have this Radial Arm saw that was working just fine. I put it in our shed and it wouldn't spin up! After a bunch of dicking around, I pulled it out, plugged it right into an outlet, BOOM, works fine. Turns out this big fat extension cable I was using was all insulation. It had 16 gauge wires in it. I put a right proper 20amp extension on it, works fine. Wires matter! Voltage drop matters! Of course, I spent a lot of time in 3rd world countries and their opinion of good voltage and mine varies significantly. It was common to see 96-98 volts in our factory in Honduras during the hottest parts of the day. On the 240 side, we'd dip down to 200ish. Fortunately, most 3-phase industrial equipment has transformers with taps for different voltages. We just put everything on the 208 taps and everything ran right as rain.
  5. You don't need a UPS, you can use a line conditioner. This way you won't have to replace the battery every 4 years. For what it's worth, I have a relatively new(2017) Samsung fridge and it runs just fine off my 14kw standby. The standby is not an inverter but I have no idea how the power compares to a portable. The fridge is on a ARC Fault/GFCI combo breaker and has never tripped.
  6. Welcome. What part of Kentucky? I have relatives in Florence and Louisville. I'm also a big fan of Mammoth. Spent 3 days in the park a few years back, had a great time. As to your future gun purchases, I can only add that you need to figure out what it is you like. Don't buy something just because it's something everyone else does. Good luck.
  7. The smoke tube was my gateway drug. I still use it IN the pellet smoker for extra smoke. The pellet smoker doesn't produce a lot of smoke at the higher heats, so the tube is there to kick it up a notch. If nothing else, the smoke tube is $13, a 20lb bag of pellets is $19 at home depot. That's enough to fill that tube 50 times. For under $35 you can smoke cheese and smoke up anything else you do on your regular grill. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06ZZRR7XD?pf_rd_r=ZJA0R91BEDYHAYVEK9K7&pf_rd_p=edaba0ee-c2fe-4124-9f5d-b31d6b1bfbee If you look closely, you can see the smoke tube to the lower left. All this smoke is from the tube, the grill is unplugged.
  8. There is a restaurant depot near where I work, but last I checked, want you to be a member and to be a member you have to own a restaurant. I didn't see any indication otherwise. I'll check it out again. I am a member of Sam's Club, but that's because there's one very close to where my FL house is. There are no Sam's around where I live. There is that one kinda near where I work at 3 and 95, never been there though. Costco is a long ways off too. I have bought brisket at Cogman's Country on 23, but it's only convenient if I'm on my way home from work. They may have had a shoulder. I will probably just do one next weekend. I ended up smoking one of those Chicken roasters. It was $1.15/lb for a 7.5lb bird. The package says "3 hours 15 minutes for 7+ pounds". At 2 hours and 30 minutes it was done. I let it rest for about an hour in the oven on warm as we had to finish a project before eating. It came out GREAT! So juicy, nice and smokey too.
  9. He said "Will be using dedicated breaker to switch power over in panel with lock out plate" I agree about the down angle one. GE makes a box.
  10. Wow, that's an inexpensive generator for that kind of wattage. That'll easily run everything unless you have 3 ton ACs or whatever. Did you consider a generlink? They are a little extra, but you don't have to dick around with breakers. Not quite an automatic switch but pretty close.
  11. I've tried wrapped and not wrapped. I definitely prefer wrapped with butcher paper, it's more moist. I usually do it in the 155-165 range when it looks like it's stalled or when it's shrunk up tight and the juice has come to the surface. If Aaron Franklin does it this way, and he does, that's good enough for me. I have both stuffed it in a cooler and let it rest outside. The only difference I saw was meat temp. The cooler meat held temp until I took it out. I'm sure one way is better, but I've not done enough brisket to make that determination for myself.
  12. I'll peruse the meats at Acme today, but I doubt they will have anything I want. Ah well, next week perhaps. I am smoking this morning though. 2 hunks of mild cheddar and 1 hunk of medium. If you're going to smoke cheddar, you'll find the sharper it gets, the more crumbly it gets when smoked, so we prefer mild and medium. I think medium is perfect, the wife likes the mild. Shrug. Applewood chips, smoke tube, 2-3 hours then vacuum seal for two weeks. It's an awesome snack.
  13. So I crapped out on the Pork Shoulder/butt. Acme had none Sussex meat market had none I guess I should give a couple ribeyes a go. Thinking maybe 30 minutes on smoke then finish on propane grill.
  14. I normally get up at 5, that gives me about 12 hours. Should be doable. I'll try to keep it to a 5 pounder or so. It depends on what they have.
  15. The biggest issue is arraigning to have it finish about 6pm. That tells me temps, it doesn't mention how long those temps take. The recipe looks strikingly similar to a brisket. I guess I could put it on 11pm. The issue is turning up the heat a few hours later. Oof, man, what a shitty first world problem. I have to get up to turn the heat up. heh.
  16. Hmm, sounds like a plan. Now I have to figure out how to cook one :)
  17. I have been smoking on my gas grill with a smoke tube for a while now. A few weeks back, I bought a Pellet smoker. Z grill. 7002b. Works great. I smoked a 9lb Brisket last weekend. 12.5 hour cook, 2.5 hour rest. Came out great. I've smoked ribs recently on the conventional propane with a smoke tube. I've never smoked chicken or turkey on a pellet smoker. Maybe some steaks? Never did those on this pellet smoker. I realize it may take much longer. Not an issue. You know the old saying? When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail? Suggestions on what I should do next?
  18. That's a little bit cheaper, probably fine. I'd rather get the Generac since at least it's assembled in the US even if the engines are made elsewhere.
  19. Very few small battery backups will keep a regular sized fridge going for any length of time. A Tesla powerwall, no problem. That Goal Zero Yeti? Not enough juice to hold it up for any length of time. If I could have only one thing, it'd be the fridge. Everything else is secondary, but the fridge and freezer will cost money. Well pump is also a biggie if you're on a well and septic like I am but there are options. You can drink bottled and flush with rain water. I used a 900 watt inverter to run our fireplace insert for years. I powered it with a 12v deep cycle battery. Then I got a Generac 4000xl and it could keep me going, fridge, lights, well, no issue. Now I have the 14KW standby and it's been a gem. I'm really looking hard at the Generac GP2200i for my Florida house. It's 1/3rd the cost of the Honda EU2000 and has the same function. Small, quiet and can run the fridge, some lights and charge phones. Good enough.
  20. There is an issue with synthetic oils and ash content in propane and natural gas engines. You need to make sure you're using a Low-ash synthetic. Heavy Duty Engine Oils(HDEO) like Rotella T6 should not be used in these engines due to ash content. As for hours, just follow the MFG recommendation and you'll never have a problem. My 14KW Standby has oil changes at 2 years or 200 hours of operation, whichever comes first. I've definitely exceeded that in that I've changed oils quite a bit more often then recommended. In fact, I should probably do it again. The oil comes out looking as clean as it goes in, so I'm not particularly worried. I do run Mobil 1, 5W-30. Even though the manual suggests different oils, including DINO oil if it's over 0 degrees, Generac says that synthetic is appropriate at any temp range, so that's what I run. I can't change the oil out twice a year like winter tires.
  21. That's the price. The only discount is if you turn in an old V1, then it's $389.00.
  22. Sold the Gen 1. I ran the Gen 1 almost 25 years. It was never like this. This is happening enough that I no longer think I'm catching a cop off a side road. It happened a bunch of times on my trip to FL. Same thing, 30-40 seconds later I finally see the cop. It's so long I think it's falsing, but it isn't. Just amazing range.
  23. So I had a KA intercept today. I'm coming up a rise on 208. From the time I get the first brap until he's in full detection range is 43 seconds. From the start to finish when we pass each other is 53 seconds. Doing the math, approaching at 60mph(probably faster) for 106 seconds(53 for him, 53 for me) measures to around 9000 feet, OVER A HILL!!!! Of course there is video :
  24. I sent him a message. Maybe he's got some insight.
  25. I am pretty good about that. I've even done the valve lash adjustment. Since it just ran for 27.5 hours, I think the water is good and cooked out for now . It is a 14kw Generac. I'd actually like someone who does it for a living to go through it in case I'm missing something. It does have a slight noticeable miss, but it always has since new. You can just hear it in the tone when it's running, like 1 in 60 firings or something. It doesn't seem to affect performance. Maybe it would be different at a heavier load or maybe it's how it governs the rpm to 3600.
