  1. High end .45acp ammo tends to be perpetually sold out even when overall ammo availability is good. Federal AE223 was 4.99 per box at a Cabela's in Maine over this past weekend. I ended up going to this Cabela's once on Fri and again on Sun. By Sunday, it appeared that the sale had been very successful as previously full shelves were quite empty. Luckily I got some on Fri
  2. I'm afraid reloaders are not off the hook Included in the Winchester letter: • Component Brass & Bullets 10% • All Primers 10% Included in the Federal letter: • Primers 10% Included in the Hornady letter: ...Hornady will implement a 5% increase on all bullet plant products, ammunition products, and cartridge cases.
  3. Any specifics? Who is out of what? I shoot 9mm, 45acp, 38spcl & .223/5.56 and things more or less look normal at my usual online sources.
  4. I didn't see that anyone had posted this yet, but sorry if that's not the case and this is a repeat. Apparently several manufacturers of ammunition have put their distributors on notice that ammunition prices will be increasing anywhere from 5-15% in April-May due to the rising price of necessary metals. Copies of letters posted at Natchez The price increase isn't fun, but I think the bigger concern is the chance of another consumer induced buying frenzy that ends up causing more disruption than the price increase.
  5. The stages look really fun. I was out of town for this one and I'm already itching for the next match in April.
  6. Which is ironic because his reputation when elected actually increased the number of gun owners in the US, meaning that a gun control agenda has only become LESS likely to get him re-elected.
  7. I sense you might be kidding anyway, but just keep a hot gun with you if that's realy important to you. I.E. loaded shotgun slung to your back while clearing house with empty & safety checked handgun, loaded handgun on your hip while clearing house with empty & saftey checked long gun, etc. As already said, you're definetly tempting fate.
  8. The notion that "gun crime" needs to be seperated out from violent crime is arbitrary. People being robbed/killed/raped by knife instead of by gunpoint is not an improvement. A rule that diminishes everyone's freedoms only to redistribute the means of crime without acutally reducing the amount of violent crime experienced by the public is useless at best, and actually makes things worse in most cases as the public is left LESS able to protect themselves against the perpetual crime rate in their area.
  9. Ok, the problems with that are right there in the article via the statement from Chris Cox, but you don't actually care. You're a standard-issue gun grab groupie, which kind of blows me away. Setting up an account to troll isn't anything new, but you even went through the effort of putting up some very generic but passable posts about buying your first handgun/etc. All of which was just an attempt to have a smidge of credibility when the time came to start burdening the board with your poorly articulated, run-of-the mill gun control agenda we've all heard and thoroughly discredited countless times before. EDIT: Apparently this is not the case, although I remain skeptical.
  10. Ok, there pretty much isn't any way I would see eye to eye with you on your whole 'the sky is falling' take on the current state of affair, or legislation regarding firearms in general, so I'm going to take a different route here. It would seem to be your opinion that federal legislation needs to be changed regarding gun control and you seem to support such efforts based off the assumption that the goverment will be able to succesffuly generate new laws that will keep guns out of the hands of criminals and therefore reduce violent crime, but will be crafted in a way that will not be unfair or prohibitive towards citizens who wish to own guns legally. Now, I have a few questions for you: 1. In general, are you usually impressed or aggrivated with the federal goverment's legislative decisions? 2. Describe something you believe the government does really well? 3. Off the top of your head, when do you last recall an instance when the goverment implemented a policy you would describe as efficient and effective? 4. If you actually follow politics at all, I already know what your answers were for 1-3, so the only question that remains is: What is your basis for assuming they will suddenly get it right when dealing with firearms regulations?
  11. That's a tangent. I hate how often repeat offenders end up back on the street, but that was not the topic at hand. The thread is about Obama's recent theatrics about gun control, as in legistlative talks about laws regarding guns, not criminals. In the course of actually suggesting New Jersey's model is worthy of being copied, you submitted the notion that the AZ shooter's plan would have been stopped in its tracks by NJ's gun laws. I found your logic to be complete BS and said as much, to which you posted this response which doesn't address or refute anything I said and/or have much relation to the original topic of Obama's plans for new gun control measures.
  12. Let me get this straight. He's batshit crazy enough to go on a shooting spree driven by motivations no coherent person can even follow, but he just wouldn't of bothered if he couldn't legally obtain his first choice of weapon? So in your mind the whole thing plays out like this: PD: Sorry, no FID because of your record. Crazy Asshole: Darn...well...I guess I could just buy a gun off the street illegally from one of NJ's many urban cesspools, or just rent an SUV and drive through the entire crowd at a high speed, or make a bomb, or a bunch of molotov coctails if I can't figure out the bomb. Heck, I'm crazier than hell and motivated enough to figure out countless ways to blindside everyone with horrific violence no legislater can ever actually predict & prevent. I mean really, who looked at a plane and thought 'missle' before 9/11? But...I really had my heart set on that Glock 19. Nah, may as well forget the whole thing and seek psychological help in hopes that I can one day become a productive member of society.
  13. I wasn't able to make the meeting, but that sort of seems like a trend that's hard to reverse. It's sort of human nature for that anger level to drop once its finally over and you can finally go buy something. Including non-compliance with the 30 day requirement in the lawsuit would likely revive the motivation for change in those who might otherwise have forgotten why its important, as that is a problem they still deal with when getting additional pistol permits. That said, I do understand that it isn't as simple as throwing in everything that is wrong with the current state of affairs and there will always be a need to focus resources on courses of action that have the best chance of success.
  14. Upper just came in from Adco and I got a chance to put everything together last night. Stag Arms Model 2 lower BCM SS410 16" Mid Length Upper Receiver Group w/ Daniel Defense Lite 12" Handguard 1/8 Twist BCM BCG Trijicon TR24 Accupoint scope w/1-4x magnification ADM AD-RECON-S mount Stainless steel thread protector permanently installed by ADCO Got it put together just in time for a weekend trip to New Hampsire. Gonna be nice to zero a rifle at any range I want
  15. Potentially dumb question here, but is this match confirmed? When I go somersetidpa.com and click on matches it says that the next match is April 17th, 2011.
  16. Anyone that knows what they're talking about will generally advocate taking defensive position while waiting for the police, but I think any reasonable person can conceed that one really HAS to opt for at least a partial or rudimentary house clearing in some situations. Examples: Scenario 1: Loved ones in another section of the house: Say you have a 14 year old son who, out of an adolescent urge to distance himself from his parents, decideds to move his room from the 2nd floor to the basement. A month later you're in a 2nd floor bedroom and hear noises likely to be from an intruder. Is there any amount of expert advice on how dangerous and/or dumb it is to clear a house on your own that would talk you into waiting for the police instead of getting to your son ASAP to make sure he is safe? Me neither... Scenario 2: Available info suggests its probably not an emergency: Just the other night, I heard a relatively loud noise of some sort, but I was sound asleep and only woke up from the sound itself. The transition from REM to wide awake left me too disoriented to really be certain what I had actually heard. I armed myself and waited for a while to see if I heard any additional noises. Nothing. No added noise of footsteps in the house or movement noise of any sort. In that kind of a scenario, the decision isn't so much clearing vs barricading as it is A) Investigate for myself or B ) Wake up the whole neighborhood & tie up limited emergency resources by calling the police? Since it ended up just being a cabinet door that fell off, I'm glad I opted for the former [with a .45 in hand].
  17. I know it's probably hard to picture when you don't even own a rifle yet, but do you have a sense of what kind of range shooting you're going to be most interested in doing? It might play a factor in what kind of rifle you'll enjoy the most. To give you an example of what I mean from my own personal experience, my first AR15 was a Stag Arms Model 2 carbine with a 16" barrel and a 1:9 twist ratio. It was a good rifle that didn't give me any problems, but I'm doing 90%+ of my shooting from bench rest or prone with the intent of shooting the smallest groups possible against targets that are 50-100 yards away. What I came to realize was that the style of shooting I do doesn't really gain any benefit from a more lightweight & maneverable 16" barrel, but retains all of the downsides (shorter sight radius, lower velocity, carbine gas system). Based on those realizations, I recently ordered an upgraded upper receiver for my AR15 that is a better match for what tradeoffs I'd sooner accomodate. I expect the new upper to be noticably more accurate and expect that is will weigh twice as much as the original carbine upper, but the weight is the shooting bench's problem, not mine
  18. Anyone have any opinions or experience with just having a thread protector pinned and forgoing a break entirely? I'm gonna end up upgrading my current upper to a heavier setup for more accurate bench shooting and I can't help but wonder if the heavier barrel and longer gas system will let me skip the added noise of a compensator and essentially break even on felt recoil.
  19. Well, given that it's BCM we're talking about, the MK12's biggest advantage over the rifle upper you linked is that they actually have it in stock
  20. You're right that they don't have MK12 configurations, but the noveske 18" SPR uppers seemed similar enough for me to consider them comparable [soely for the purposes of what I was interested in purchasing]. I probably should have stressed that I was comparing to a Noveske upper that I found equally appealing. BCM upper I had in mind - http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/BCM-SPR-Mk-12-Mod-Bravo3-p/bcm-urg-mk12-3%20dd12.htm Noveske upper I had in mind - http://noveskerifleworks.com/cgi-bin/imcart/display.cgi?item_id=18-556&cat=124&page=1&search=&since=&status=
  21. Eh, BCM's usual savings over similar Noveske products isn't really evident for this particular variety of upper. The difference between the BCM MK12 I wanted and a Noveske upper I'd consider equivalent is less that $72 including shipping. Unless they really want a lot of additional money for the NJ compliance option, Noveske becomes the better option if a BCM upper means the cost & PITA factor of upfront gunsmithing.
  22. Just an FYI on BCM, it seems that they only offer permanent muzzle device installation on 14.5" uppers that require it to avoid NFA complications, but will not do it for NJ compliance on their other uppers. I really had my eye on an MK12 upper they have listed on the site with several muzzle device options available(including nj legal comps), so I sent them an e-mail asking if I could order it and request that the compensator I select be permanently installed. They wrote back very promptly, but politely advised me that they do not offer that service. Since I already own a complete rifle I would have been looking to upgrade with the MK12, I can only really order an upper that's going to arrive with the compensator already pinned, so it looks like BCM is out. Sill a great company, but I'm definetly pretty dissapointed.
  23. While it's great news for those in Wyoming, it isn't really the tide turning IMO when states that already have a pretty solid respect for gun ownership rights pass bills like this. I mean, perhaps I haven't been paying close enough attention, but have any states on the Brady Campaign [dis]honor roll show signs of improvement that weren't forced on them by judicial rullings? I mean, CA continues to introduce nonsense legislation(ammo purchase limits, registration requirements, banning the limited open carry rights they have now, etc), while DC & Chicago continue working to circumvent the intent of DCvHeller & McDonaldvChicago, and NJ has shown a clear intent to dig its heels in on the carry permit lawsuit. I have hopes all this things will go down in flames and things will improve for all legal gun owners in every state, but it seems more clear than ever that anti-gun sentiment in the legislation will not be rooted out easily.
  24. That'd be me. Looks like we're officially the antisocial ones. There's always next time though Anyway, the whole thing was definitely a blast and all the regulars at the club were really cool. Very helpful and they really do go out of their way to make everyone feel welcome. They also have a some ridiculously fast & accurate shooters. I literally missed a few of their runs because I simply looked down to check the time on my cell phone
