  1. Hmmmm and all this time I was wondering why they call them back up iron sights! My issue isnt with their operation or location. Its with the sight picture through them. For me its a very muted picture. The way they are letting the light through(or not) or the shape of the opening or something in the way they are shaped makes for a very dim sight picture for me. So much so that they are fundamentally unusable for me in low light.
  2. Although I have a number of BUIS, KAC's are my favorite. I like the way they adjust and I get a crisp clear sight picture through them. The stock irons on some of my other rifles are good. But my LEAST favorite are the stock BUIS on the Tavor. https://www.knightarmco.com/1960/shop/optic-mount-buis/micro-rear-flip-sight-2
  3. I agree the hardness req isnt that high. But Ive seen a number of 1911 slides busted straight in half just because of the heat treat being off. That Black Nitride is applied at what, like 900 or more degrees? It may not need to be as hard as say rifle receivers but it has to be right. BTW a number of custom rifle receiver makers will not black Nitride their receivers. One in particular shared the results. The proof tested non black nitride receiver bulged a tiny bit. The nitrided receiver grenaded. Obviously higher pressure than most handguns but... Indeed small parts are a problem due to embrittlement. I was actually a pioneer with the DLC coating. We did a run of the very first handguns done with the coating. It was great! But our pistols were prepped right. Later others tried and it was a miserable failure so what was different between ours and theirs had to be looked at so they stopped for a while until it was figured out. Fast forward about 15 years later and it seems they have it sorted out. I actually like Norrells molly resin. I found it to be more durable than cerakote, a little thinner, less prone to chipping and more natural lubricity which Cerakote didnt have at all until recently. New Cerakote will have a lubricating component added. Ill be interested to see the new Cerakote.
  4. Eh that finish scares me! Too high heat for the application process. If the parts are heat treated before, they might not be after.
  5. I think all points made here have merit. And as I always say, finding the right balance is key. And this is why I tell people, be very sure you want to pursue LR shooting because its a fairly deep rabbit hole. But somewhat in the same vein of 10x's point, it dont matter if you give me Tiger Woods personal golf clubs, its not going to improve MY game at all. So you have to put in the work. So everyone has to weigh their own resources and find that balance accordingly. If you spend so much on equipment you cant afford the club membership to practice, it wasn't a good balance. Most equipment has standouts at certain price points. Bully I think you have hit on two. The PST was a good value at its price point and I think you have landed there again on the NF at the next tier up. But Im sure you could give Shannon Kay a stock Tika and a bushnell (solid performing entry level pieces) and he would kick my ass all day long no matter what I had. But all variables weighed and considered, buying the best you can afford within reason and balance seems to end up being a better deal as there is so much false economics in inferior equipment. Good discussion gents!
  6. Ahhh but glass quality is but a single category right? Weigh this math. What is the cost of all the money spent on train up for a match, the match itself, travel, lodging, time off etc etc etc. Now all mechanical devices can fail. But do you feel more confident you wont have a tracking issue at the worst time with the Vortex or the NF? To me that added safeguard, to not waste all that expense, alone is worth the scope price differential. And I probably would have recommended keeping the Vortex as a backup scope if competing is you pursuit. But hey, I fully understand we all need to close our wallet at some point!
  7. Bully, an interesting experiment. Print out your statement. After a year or two behind the NF, pop back behind the PST and see if your opinion still holds. Something you can try now to get an example if what Im talking about. Take both scopes out at dusk. Pick something to focus on at distance. See which one you can no longer see the target with first as the light fades. Ive never done this with the scopes you have so I would actually be interested in the results. But generally speaking, its pretty amazing in some cases how much more time you pick up with the better scope. As your eye and experience gets used to better, you will then see the shortcomings of the PST more clearly. Color representation is another thing that at first glance you dont see. But after a while, you start to see how important it is.
  8. DLC is excellent (and not a powder coating, its PVD). Powder coating, not good on guns. Anodising is primarily for aluminum and alloys like Ti. Your options are things like Norrells, Cerakote, or DLC.
  9. While I wouldn't put it past ANY politicien to pander to the press, making any anti feel at least an iota of the scrutiny we constantly face as gun owners in NJ, Im good with it
  10. This states gun laws are built on hanging people on technicalities. So to dish said technicalities back to those creating them is justice in my book.
  11. You will hear no complaints from me about NF! Indeed thats some mag, but I think it may be useful for they type of shooting your doing.

    SCAR 17 Prices??

I like it because of the tighter tolerance spec and I really dig they way the bolt is done. But after all it is still and AK.

JR, some constructive criticism inbound. I hope you can take it in the context which it is intended. You need to take significantly more objective approach to open discussion of the topics at hand. Take biez, emotion and personal preference out of it. Additionally, you CAN NOT take debate personally. If you cant do this, you will be in for a very rough go presenting content to the public. My issue was not with your selection. It was with the logic and reasoning you presented. Frankly I continue to struggle with your rationalizations. We may never see eye to eye. And this may be due to the possibility we place our priorities in entirely different places. Ill take a rifle with the ergonomics of a brick if it always works over one that feels comfy but is of questionable reliability. But thats my priorities and yours may be entirely different. Just understand there are a number of people here on NJGF that have a significant depth and breadth of knowledge and it would be a paramount mistake to assume everyone is a keyboard commando that presents a different perspective than yours.

Excellent rail! Bit of a pain to install though.

The only AK type rifle I like!

    SCAR 17 Prices??

If you dont mind the risk, I dont mind the attempt. How hard is it to find MSAR barrels these days?

    SCAR 17 Prices??

Ive been on snipers hide for 16 years. Ive gotten to know quite a few of the membership personally. So many of the anecdotes from there are from people I know. Additionally an aimpoint mount that I designed and manufactured accompanied the original LWRC IAR to the MC trials so my view is from a little more behind the curtain than most. So for me, there is simply to much hit or miss with that system and I dont know anyone who has gotten any serious accuracy out of one. No it doesn't come with a G trigger, but at normal prices the rifle is about a grand less so you could add the trigger, rail and a 308 mag compatible lower and still be under. But if LR is the goal, neither of these rifles would even be in my top 3 choices.

    SCAR 17 Prices??

Its normal to feel dirty the first time you cheat on your MSAR, especially going with a much bigger girl!!!

    SCAR 17 Prices??

For someone just interested in the range you have A LOT of mags! I dont think they need any content, they sell EVERY one they make! But let me continue to be the devils advocate. You would rather go with a REPR, a rifle that I think is easily demonstrated that it has a very spotty history, rather than buy a SCAR and just get a standard mag lower swap and have a rifle with a strong rep for reliability that accepts standard 308 mags? I'll convert you HE! G trigger. Mrex rail sys. mmmm mmm good.
  20. Shane45

    SCAR 17 Prices??

Negative, it was the 308 REPR. IIRC it was traced to bad magwell design and they had to recut a bunch of them which helped but didnt really solve the issue. 1 of those was owned by a serious LR competitor here in NJ. I count around 7 REPR's in this thread of which a number have taken multiple rides back to the factory without resolution. http://forum.snipershide.com/threads/lwrci-repr-mk2.6675853/ Not a brag so dont make me run and get you some cranberry juice, but Im not bothered by the price of mags, it does not eat into my ammo budget. But as I said, FAL mags can be made to work and the last time I bought those I paid 5 bucks each!
  21. Shane45

    SCAR 17 Prices??

Its your limited scope. You could not and still cant see the full spectrum of the discussion/point is far beyond mag compatibility. Yes I mistook you to mean pmags as did others because its a common reference to SCARS. But the salient point is if it can take PMAGS it can pretty much take any 308 AR mag, solving the one compliant you apparently have. But MANY 308 platforms have mag challenges. But as chance would have it, the original REPR is the worst I ever recall. Many reported they could only get them to run with KAC SR25 mags.

    SCAR 17 Prices??

Oh, I see, your still stuck on mags but continue to ignore the barrel full of other proprietary parts. BTW, some simple mods to a FAL mag and it will work in a SCAR, but I know, there's only a couple million FAL mags floating around the planet.... Man do you have your period or what? You say you would go with the REPR because you like it but criticise me for making a point about buying things because I like them, not because they meet a basic need. Get over it.
  23. Shane45

    SCAR 17 Prices??

You didnt say you pick it because you like it. I could easily live with that. Your point was about being proprietary. If your not interested in the discussion, why are you still talking? It would seem to me your the one with an emotional attachment to a specific brand. No a rifle doesn't have to be battle proven but it sure helps give confidence it will work! There are literally tons of people reporting all the issues they have had with their REPR's to the point of selling it for a loss. A pattern has emerged. If you can live with that roll of the dice, again, be my guest, order it up! I do not see any of those kinds of reports from the SCAR17 and I would bet there are many more SCAR17's out there than REPR's. There are members on this very forum that have had a rough go with their REPR's. I have personally had hands on many LWRC problem rifles. Agency rifles included. In recent years they have improved. But the REPR, as I said, seems to still have issues. And because the rifle is PROPRIETARY, they have to keep going back to the factory to be corrected. My selections arent based on feelings, they are based on analysis and my goal for the given tool. Humble brag? Give me a break with that nonsense. Its extremely rare I talk about what semi's I own online. By all means, please direct me to something you have written. Perhaps Ill read something that will give me a different perspective on your position on these topics.

    SCAR 17 Prices??

Fanboy? Clearly you dont know me. Before you keep spouting off about fanboy bullshit, my opinion is based on solid experience and trigger time with just about every one of these systems. You do know all those little parts that make up the piston system in the REPR are proprietary to the rifle right? You are aware about the rail systems right? The bolt, the barrel etc etc? Why does battle proven matter? I sure Im dont need to explain it to you. I dont give a shit what you pick, your free to pick whatever you want and it doesn't even have anything to do with the second amendment. But your position you present for the basis of your selection is illogical.
