  1. Well I guess its done! was a lot of work ,mostly cleaning up the barrel/receiver. Actually had to start with my orbital sander 80 grit cause hand sanding wasnt doing it.worked it down to a 400 grit polish. Cleaned, oiled right down to the tiniest set screw and spring. Cold blued what I could and the barrel looks awesome, receiver could darken up a bit more but thats for later again sometime. Was able to save every thing so its all original, except for the dog spring on the peep sight which had rusted apart.Even have the 4 sight reticles working good.Hand loaded some blanks and fired well, put a dozen rounds down the tube magazine and they all cycled/ejected fine also. I'm suprised at how enjoyable the whole project was,and feel good about rescuing an old rusted relic that hasnt been fired, maintained and forgitten about for over 50 yrs. I dated it to 1954 manufacture, pretty sure. Lookin forward to the range.
  2. Action Shooter, easy going and does a lot of very reasonably priced transfers. tiny shop with a small counter of asst'd arms.
  3. I was told that for a combined Birthday/Xmas present I would have the "priviledge" to get another reasonably priced gun! right now I've got two handguns- Beretta Cougar 9mm and a Ruger gp100 357 and an old Mossberg 22. I really like the idea of a short gun /long gun complimenting each other so here's what i'm looking at. A Beretta Storm CX4 9mm that can share mags with the Cougar or an old school lever Winchester 38/357.I know both are carbines but a long distance shooter or AR just isn't too relevent for me right now. Autos are cool but I also love the"hands on" fun of revolvers and levers. This is a tough call for me so help me out!
  4. or do i gotta do a cheesy cold blue myself. What about CeraKote- anyone around here do that? I have a nice clean (well almost) old rifle barrel thats gonna need a new finish.
  5. Well I've got the old Mossberg broken down to individual pcs, only pc left to take apart is the bolt but I'll wait on that, enough little pcs laying around already! Found the old cleaning kit to it and was able to clean the bore- nice and shiny with sharp clean rifling thru out, wahoo!Decided to see just how bad the rust actually is so did 3 coats of naval jelly and 0000 steel wool but still plenty rough black spots and patches. Guess its gonna get a series of sandpapering. Front sight ramp un-salvageable and had atough time getting the two screws out from inside the mag tube but got a tip to heat em up with a soldering gun after soaking everything in penetrating oil overnight. The wood is actually in pretty good shape after cleaning it and I think I'll leave it alone as it has only afew light nicks that I'll call charector. Anyway just wanted to get into the nitty gritty real quick and look into the soul of this thing , got a long haul to go.
  6. now why would you wanna bring a nice gun like that to an indoor range? (oops, did I say that out loud?)
  7. I guess this is a two part question. 1)travel 2)range time. I'll take this up with the powers that be at the range I am a member,Cherry Ridge. When we signed up as members, if I remember correctly, we checked off a transfer type waiver that allows just that- a transfer at the range between members so you can check out your buds gun, a "special" benefit of membership. However as stated in my OP my wife will not be with me so there's the trick question. I'll just need to confirm the part of having her gun and traveling without her part.
  8. I should NOT by a Bushmaster xm15e2s ? Got my handguns so now its time to stretch out the barrels. Been looking around for a while and think its the one for me. Seems to have a good history/rep and kinda middle of the road pricing which is always a concern but not the deciding factor. Ruger mini 14 is a runner-up.
  9. Can I take my wife's pistol to the range without her? Legally registered of course.
  10. I stand corrected on the model. S130 is for the peep sight only. Found the well hidden barrel stamp and its a model 146B 22-S-LR made in 1949-57. Thanx to Havlin Sales for that.
  11. Got an old Mossberg 22 bolt from the 1950's that needs a lot of tlc.Hasn't been used in maybe 50+ yrs. fair amount of light rust, rotted away leather sling and who knows what in the bore . First of all I know theres not much $$ value but it is just about the only thing I have from my long gone dad so thats the value there. Figure if i can get a bore snake thru it it'll be worth the time fixing it up, nice winter project. I'm just not sure about the best way for rust removal/metal prep & bluing. Are there any good bluing places(or smiths) in North NJ? Any other tips for making it a shooter, not going for a purist museum resto just a safe gun to plink with.
  12. Alright- 5 mins filling out the COE's and I'm done. Spent more time on this post, Thanx.
  13. got my yes vote in but not liking the proposed annual $500 fee
  14. Stupid question- is it really that easy, just a face to face with my mom to fill out a duplicate COE? No need to go thru police/registering etc.? Thanx all for your info.
  15. Sorry- didnt specify it is a Mossberg 22 rifle. There was no will as dear old dad hi-tailed it 20 years prior to his passing, maybe its considered abanded property? Anyway I was thinking how would we go about proving its ours(my moms)? would the police want to do a search on it even tho it hasnt seen daylight in 50+ yrs much less fired! And about the COE, is that from my mom to me? Am a little hesitant aboutopening up a can of worms here with the powers that be.
  16. Hypothetical situation-What if I just "found" an old slightly rusty .22 in my moms house that was my dads who has been deceased for 10 yrs? Assuming my mom doesnt really care about it basically defaults to me, what are the protocols for legally taking possesion of it? Pretty sure it was never registerd and it dates back from the mid 50's. Needs to be restored if its not too costly, only real value is it was my dads.BTW, I do have a FID card.
  17. "within 30 days from the date of receipt of the application for residents of this State and within 45 days for nonresident applicants" After reading the above excerpt from the 30 day law where did the interpretation of 30 days after the local cop shop gets back all the investgative info come from? BTW, my two seperate apps were approved after 43 and 64 days.
  18. thanx guys- funny tho, was just enjoying some random posts/discussions around here and pretty sure I saw some pics with those evil stocks....nah- must be my imagination!
  19. Just trying to make sense of the non-sensical laws. Thinking on a bushmaster semi rifle for now.
