i would recommend looking into either 9mm or .38 as a first pistol for home/self defence. try to shoot as many diferent guns as you can to get a feel for them to help decide which one you like better. also a good pistol class will teach you much about proper handling and safety and will give you a chance to try different guns. good hunting

the frame is the same for the 9mm and .40 so YES you can swap the slide and barrel. and if you have a .40 you just need a 9mm barrel and mags, but you can't use .40 in a 9mm slide.

If you are still looking then I would suggest you buy a 1911 with a lightweight frame and a good Marvel or another .22 conversion kit. I have a GSG .22 and it's good but you said you are looking for another pistol as well as a .22 so I would recommend a nice pistol with a dedicated .22 slide that way your kids can learn the 1911 platform and the light frame and thin grips keeps it manageable for them.
