  1. signed, #8056. why would you want to pay more just to pump your own gas?
  2. i would recommend looking into either 9mm or .38 as a first pistol for home/self defence. try to shoot as many diferent guns as you can to get a feel for them to help decide which one you like better. also a good pistol class will teach you much about proper handling and safety and will give you a chance to try different guns. good hunting
  3. the frame is the same for the 9mm and .40 so YES you can swap the slide and barrel. and if you have a .40 you just need a 9mm barrel and mags, but you can't use .40 in a 9mm slide.
  4. If you are still looking then I would suggest you buy a 1911 with a lightweight frame and a good Marvel or another .22 conversion kit. I have a GSG .22 and it's good but you said you are looking for another pistol as well as a .22 so I would recommend a nice pistol with a dedicated .22 slide that way your kids can learn the 1911 platform and the light frame and thin grips keeps it manageable for them.
