I will tell you this I own a successful plumbing heating and air business, and I cant afford to live in SmokeRise, Mountain Lakes, Mendham, Upper Saddle River, Basking Ridge, so I doubt highly I'm the guy ripping people off that everyone speaks of. I do have a nice house and some nice toys but I physicaly busted my ass for what I have. And had to deal with thousands of homeowners to achieve what i have. Not fun sometimes. Just like there are some dishonest plumbers, I would say there are just as many horrible homeowners to match them. There are around 900 master plumbers in the state. How many are jerks? How many homes are in the state? I believe the jerk customers outnumber us by a landslide. I'm not always loosing money obviously or I would be out of business. But my profit margin on a water heater installation is very modest. I make approximately 30% if I'm lucky. Thats the minimum my business plan requires to stay open and support itself. I don't think thats a rip off. Its not easy work either remember I'm sacrificing my body and traveling to you hopeful everything goes well, to give you a worry free clean professional job. I suppose you feel no business is entitled to profit from preformed work? What would you expect in your pocket to stick your hands into someone else's toilet? Or to get out of bed at 2 am on a Sunday night to run out and fix a leak thats destroying a multi million dollar home during a snow storm? Thats all I'm saying, I can honestly tell you I don't feel I'm a crook for performing services and modesty profiting from it. I have no problem sleeping with myself at night I know I always give honesty to my customers and never take advantage of them because of the neighborhood they may reside in. I have a conscience. It almost always its a two man job. And you have to take in to account, I have to drive there pick up the heater at a supply house, bring it to your house, In a van that normally uses close to $100 a day in fuel. carry liability insurance witch believe me if you saw the rates it would make you sick. Match my taxes and my employees taxes, workmans comp, pay my and his healthcare, the phone bill, electric, the rent at the shop, truck maintenance, how much of that $400 I actually see afterward? take the old one away to a scrap yard someplace, not too many next to smokerise. drive to your town hall to fill out and pay for permit fee,hopefully the one lady that works there isn't out to lunch when I get there or I have to wait or come back later. Im always willing to cut someone a brake that can bring their house to me. Like I said we aren't getting rich on a water heater. Its an hours worth of work before the job that may take an hour if were lucky and it drains quickly with a pump. Or it could be 3 hours to drain, then an hour to go get rid of it when were done and file the permit app. For two men theres not much $ for profit out of that. that price is very fair and I'm less than what most guys charge. I also have to warranty my work for a year, so if theres a problem I come back for free and loose money. Every heater install is a gamble for every plumber that we may make a little money on. I know I charge around $350-400 to install a water heater. That's really not crazy price. It includes draining the old unit, removing it from the house, taking it with me to get rid of, installation of the new unit, and any material needed to install. Some homes are simple easy installs, some are nightmares from hell. I can assure you were not getting rich off water heaters. The other part is when we put them in we also assume all liability involved with it. When you do so and theres an issue (like your house burns down, your family doesn't wake up in the morning from carbonmonoxide poisoning, or your home floods its your problem. Good luck explaining to the insurance adjuster about how you saved a few hundred bucks to install it yourself and didn't have a permit or an inspection. electric tankless heaters are still horrible. They usually require 3 double pole 30 amp breakers and three lines run to make them operate. Without a minimum of a 200 amp service its not even possible. Even then they don't work well, usually make all the lighting in the house dim when the elements fire. Gas fired units are much better in the tankless world. Nither work well for long without proper water treatment though. correct I was visiting as a guest of a member. I never handled my firearm in an unsafe manner not rapid firing, no muzzle sweeping, or leaving it loaded and unattended. I would never do that. Had I done so I would expect to be corrected HARSHLY it would have been well deserved. This guys problem with me was I had not fully inserted the flag it was laying in the open action. The person I was with didn't explain how serious they RSO's were about that rule. But instead of just saying "hey pal we push that flag all the way into the barrel here, please don't leave your firearm like that again" he got in my face, literary within two inches of my face and screamed at me. I never said a word to him before during or after his rant. It was more than I felt was warranted. No one had to send me packing I sent myself. If you all say its not that way there any longer and everyone treats eachother with respect especially on gun safety, I would be willing to give the place another try. Its been a few years since I had that incident there. I really liked the place. And I would never endanger another shooters well being ever. If I did ever go back I would put 3 flags into my gun lol. True not my range. I think a better approach to safety is separate the person from the gun completely. That the only real way to prevent an accidental discharge. The flag isn't going to stop that from happening. Flags don't make me feel safer. A visibly open action is fine at almost every range. Body's separated from the guns is even better. I like to think I am. I have nothing against fellow shooters who go to CR, I just prefer not to deal with their staff they're unprofessional IMO. just pay the $50 for the permit. Its for your own and your families safety anyway. A water heater improperly installed can be very dangerous. There's a real reason for codes and inspection, especially if your not a professional. When your kid winds up covered in third degree burns because you didn't install a safety tube on your pressure temperature relief valve, your homeowners insurance is going to want to know who installed the unit and who inspected it. They can tell how old it is by the serial number. Not to mention if your caught the fine is $250 for not calling for inspection, and $2500 for what they call false and misleading (means you had no intention of pulling a permit, and were trying to hide the fact that you installed an appliance illegally and you were caught doing so) the towns are hard up for money right now and its not abnormal these days to have the inspector driving around looking for work being done without permits. just fair warning to you. Pull a permit its not a big deal. If your on here asking questions you don't know the codes I'm sure. It takes 4 years of school along with 5 years of working as an apprentice to learn all the codes and become a master plumber after passing the test. Yeah installing a water heater anyone can do, installing one to code so it passes inspection and is safe takes a pro. Im a licenced master plumber. We call them water heaters too. How can you heat hot water? Its already hot. It would be a cold water heater.... I wont even give my opinion on shark bite fittings, buying waters at home cheapo or Blowes. You want to install that stuff in your house fine with me. First I never treated any of the staff of CR with any disrespect ever! Even after they screamed at me because I layed the flag on top of my gun action that was open and had no magazine in laying down action up with no one touching it or standing near it. Instead of fully inserting it into the barrel completely. Ridiculous rule anyway. Most ranges ive been to the rule is no one near a bench or port while anyone is on the range period. The flag isn't going to do anything to stop an accident. They are just jerks to people in the name of "safety"? Please... thats no excuse to treat people badly. I never even argued back with the guy or said anything to him. Ten years ago I probably would have just dropped the fat slob on the spot. Luckily for him I'm not that guy anymore. Definitely not worth the trouble. I simply said "ok" packed my stuff into my range bag and left. Its a real shame too its actually a pretty nice range. And I'm a guy that has no problem spending thousands of dollars on shooting every year. What makes it the worst range I've ever been to is the staff. Second I never ever in my lifetime have ever treated or spoke to my mother the way the staff of CR treats their members, nor would I ever think about treating her that way. Basically in my experience at that place it seems like they really don't give a crap about anyone that shoots there. The staff is on some kind of huge ego trip and has complete disregard for others. they use the excuse of "its for your safety" to scream at grown men and women that are paying money to use the place? If I ever spoke to one of my customers in that manner and then told them it was for their own safety I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't have them very long. I just refuse to pay money to be some jerks verbal punching bag. How you could turn that into disdain for my mother is beyond me my friend. Again if you enjoy being a member there great. I just refuse to even be associated with the likes of the people who work at the place. As far as wishing cancer on them, ok thats probably a little harsh. I actually take that statement back. But if I were a member of CR I would be embarrassed to tell anyone, I know for a fact I'm not the only guy that dislikes the RSO's methods of communication with fellow humans. totally worth the money $475 for a full membership with rifle is fine with me. Less if your military, former military, or Leo. 12 trips is the same price as a membership. I know my range experience is much better at RTSP. You wouldn't know because you are at Cherry Ridge, if your happy with the Douche bags that work there then stay. I refuse to pay money to be treated like shit when I know perfectly well I'm being safe in my practices. being over cautious and being a total asshole that deserves a trip to the dentist from the fist most of them deserve to the mouth, are too different things. I'll stick with a real range with nice people that are extremely safety concious and treat customers/members like humans such as RTSP. After having been to both ranges I feel sorry for the members of CR, they don't know what they're missing. Other than the longer distance range CR has nothing on RTSP. I'm in the plumbing trades and you bet your ass we don't want to pay for 100% copper ammo. As of this year any plumbing materials for Potable water cannot contain any trace amounts of lead. The law used to be .002% of lead allowed. As of the new year its 0.000000% the prices on faucets,valves, and fittings have just gone through the roof if they already weren't expensive enough. Doesn't matter too much to me I'm not paying the higher prices, my customers will be.. if three or four other marked cars joined the parade I would pull over for obvious reasons. But an unmarked mini van? I'm not stopping for.... please anyone could put lights in the grill of a minivan, could be a car jacker. Exactly what I would say when we arrived at the cop shop. If they don't like it too bad drive a normal raido car and this problem could be avoided. I'm not putting my life at risk because they want to be cute patroling in a mom mobile. Write the ticket, I have a lawyer no big deal. By ten AM Monday morning I make a cops pay for 2 days usually. I can afford the ticket and the lawyer to make it disappear. I went tonight to shoot also, got port 18 in the new side way quieter in there. I got there an hour before close but if I have time tomorrow I'm going back to try the simulator its free to try all weekend. Costs $75 for 1/2 hour after that. I agree all the employees are awesome witch is why i became a member the past year. the VIP membership is a cool idea but way expensive $2000 annually. You get unlimited guests, all your family members are also automatically members,private VIP lounge, can reserve ports in advance. Plus all the other member bonuses regular members get. I was there Tuesday nite the entire place looked awesome. Didn't play.with the shooting simulator, but i did check out the new cafe and VIP lounge. The expansion ports are also much quieter with the new wall insulation then the old side just shorter distance. they added a lot of new rental guns as well as tons of extra gun counter and display cases.
