  1. Thanks Richie, It's nice to know somebody is thinking of me. As far as the 1911's go, I'm partial to the Colt's. If I were doing one today, I'd buy the best quality 1911 for a good price and Para just came out with one called the GI Expert. Not so plain Jane either. It's got a few bells and whistles. I think it's a great platform to start with. It goes for under $600.00. http://www.para-usa.com/new/product_pistol.php?id=73 Wilson, Ed Brown, Les Baer, all do beautiful work but they are pricey. I'll be sending my stainless Colt Govt Model out for some work shortly and it will go to Novak who makes some of the best low profile sights out there. Best advice: if you have the cash, certainly you can go and get the already build gun. If you want to build slowly, first determine the use. Then start with the most important upgrades: Reliability, Trigger, Sights. All the builders out there have a bunch of different packages. Do your research and determine what you really need. The best part of the 1911 is that you can do it in stages. http://www.para-usa.com/new/product_pistol.php?id=73
  2. I'm guessing you're referring to blue rather than black revolvers. I've got 3 Colt's fininshed in Colt Royal Blue. Sombody out there please chime in about the beauty of these guns. It's almost like a black/blue/purple combo that has incredible depth. Don't get me wrong, I love stainless and nickel guns also. A blue finish with some nice wood stocks is a thing of beauty. A quote from U.S. Marshals:
  3. Chad ! I can't believe you stole that plan right out of my book. And pretty much word for word. I think we're going this weekend but I change it up a little by going to antique stores in Lancaster. Got a nicely aged 1880's English double to hang over the door in my office for $125.00 a few months back. Last time I had to do the New Hope thing I was sneezing my brains out from all the candles and potpouri in the stores. I just checked the fridge, looks like we're out of maple syrup. Vermont ?
  4. Hello there Max. As far as revolvers not being safe, they are no different than most self-defense auto-loaders out there today. Compare a Double Action Revolver to any Glock or Sig that is DAO. There is no external safety. The trigger must be depressed for the gun to fire. All modern DA revolvers have some form of transfer bar or hammer block safety mechanism to prevent firing when dropped and you can carry with confidence with all the chambers loaded. Remember, you still have the capability for SA fire unless it's a DAO revolver. (even safer) I believe it's the safest gun for the new gun owner. In doing training, I see some new shooters needing to climb a steep learning curve because they want to go with an autoloader first. That's OK as we teach the mechanics of the firearm and how each part and system interacts with each other. If they are not mechanically inclined, it's sometimes difficult because now we have a safety, grip safety, slide release, decocker, takedown lever, etc. I'm laughing as I say this.... It's you young guys.... You guys look at revolvers like some antiques of a bygone era. When I go shooting with my 19-year-old son, he instantly picks out only auto-loaders to shoot. He recently said to me: " Dad, what are you like Wyatt Earp"? Next time we meet at the range, I'll bring a few Sixguns for you to try out. My 4" 686 Smith will outshoot anything I own, and I've got a safe full.
  5. There's nothing like a sixgun, wheelgun, smokewagon. They are my favorites. Mine include : S & W 686 4", model 10 2", 637 2", model 29 6" nickel. Colt Detective Special 2" x2, Colt Agent x2, Colt Cobra. I think I need a few more.
  6. Just in case anyone is in the market for a Sig 556, you can find one at Sportsman's Center, Bordentown, NJ. I stopped by after the Range 14 shoot on Sunday. It is being sold as used but it is unfired. Some guy had to trade it in for some reason. They're asking $ 1800.00.
  7. Sounds like just components not having the capability to fire a projectile. In the broken-down status you describe, it is not ammunition. However, we are in NJ. If you are traveling with the firearms that are capable of chambering the brass, follow the NJ laws. Guns in the trunk lunloaded.and locked. Ammo in passenger area or at least as far apart from the guns as possible. Yes, it sounds ridiculous, but who knows how a LEO will react when they see brass in the vicinity of a firearm, whether the brass is loaded or not. In closing, I'd like to actually answer your question. In my opinion, they are not regular cartridges and shouldn't have to be treated as such. In reality, if you're in NJ and have the gun that chambers the brass in the same vehicle, treat them as such. If you have a reloading press mounted to the dashboard and a box of 240 grain bullets on the seat you mighy have some splainin to do.
  8. That's a good question. I used to use them as primer powered practice ammo in my basement. Would not want to get hit by one at about 400 - 450 fps. If you used a magnum primer, you might be able to penetrate skin so I would say "yes". I guess we would need to know from what standpoint, legal ? I switched to X-Ring Rubber Bullets to reduce the mess.
  9. Has anybody seen this new Single Shot Pistol ? I'm on a roll today.
  10. Here's my Manly Clay Thrower. After throwing 20 or 30 for your shooting buddy , your arm hurts so bad you can't shoulder the shotgun. Seriously, I don't really use it, but we did try it many years ago. Works like a charm. You'll just need rotator cuff surgery afterwards.
  11. Hey Gang. I thought I'd mention Targetmaster in Chad Ford, PA. About 20-miles south of Philly. Full-Auto guns for rent. MP5's etc. The most fun you can have with your clothes on. With today's ammo prices make sure you keep it to short bursts. http://www.targetmaster.com/index.html
  12. No, I read about it in G & A I think. I've got so many gun magazines I can't really say for sure. They do it for Glocks also. I'm tempted to get an XD just so I can get that grip treatment. 3 permits on the way. Still waiting.
  13. Check out http://robarguns.com I read about the XD work they do recently. Top notch work. They do a grip texture job for the XD. Reasonable price also. $ 75.00 for the whole grip. You can also just do the frontstrap for 25.00. No tape, it's engraved into the polymer frame. Picture here http://www.robarguns.com/xd.htm Sweeeeeeeet!
  14. Chad ! Chad ! Chad ! Just spend the $ 108.00 and buy the Foul-Out System before you blow up the house. Is that .22 still leaded up ?
  15. She keeps hearing about home invasions and wants to be prepared. I don't really know what changed her mind but she did mention that she refuses to be a victim. It may be the fact that I said: " How dare anyone take away your right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness". I guess when you quote the Founding Fathers, it sheds a whole new light on the subject. I also reminded her of this... " the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." This describes a right that the people already had. Not a right that was granted by the Second Amendment. Now to pick out something that is a good fit for her. I would say it's probably going to be a wheelgun. She said she likes my NIB Colt Detective Special. I told her it does not work anymore.
  16. Another proud member of the Clan, or Tribe. My liberal mother was never happy with my sport or shooting in general but more recently she has decided to apply for her FID. She will be taking a couple of my NRA training courses over the next few weeks.
  17. Thanks Chad. I didn't see the previous post. I changed my mind, I will sit back and cheer for now. Where are the National Parks in Pennsylvania ? I feel the need for a trip.
  18. Concealed Carry in National Parks could be signed into law on Friday. This was shot down some time ago but the bill was tacked on to the Credit Card Bill for passage. It's amazing how our congress works. Read the article. Many of the anti-gun democrats are furious about this and with Obama. He has said that he will sign the complete bill on Friday. First the Heller decision, now this. Things are going our way but this is not the time to sit back and cheer. We need to keep being vigilant about these issues and push our agenda. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/05/20/credit-card-forces-dems-vote-gun-rights/?test=latestnews
  19. He's going to need a driver's license with the new address for ID. Probably best to just wait rather than do it twice.
  20. Oldslabsides - Affectionate description of the legendary 1911 Government Model Pistol. This phrase was coined by WWII soldiers and described the flat sided design by Mr. Browning. I recently heard that the term may even go back to WWI.
  21. Just saw this post. I'm suprised nobody replied. I got a few of these a while back. Great upgrade. I have the old blue ones. I keep them along with a spare parts kit in the stock and pistol grip.
  22. Yes, it's needed. The dealer supplies the form. 4473, cert of eligibility, NICS, and some make you sign a dealer made form for keeping the gun away from minors. Section 2C:58-16 requires firearm dealers to give all firearm transferees the following written warning, printed in block letters not less than one-fourth of an inch in height:
  23. I would be interested in the Lee 4-hole ClassicTurret Press also if it can be had
  24. Actually there are 3 rings. The Engagement Ring, The Wedding Ring, and The Suffering.
  25. I feel your pain. First things first. Got to get the barrel clean. Try switching to a cleaning jag rather that the slotted patch holder. After you brush (Bronze Brush) with the Hoppes #9 which removes lead, use a patch over the jag. It gives you much more surface area getting rubbed by the patch and a much tighter fit. Keep repeating until it comes out clean. I used to use a Lewis Lead Remover for my 44 Mag when I shot cast bullets. Basically it's a rod with a brass patch that you pull through the barrel. Pulls out sheets of lead like crazy. Just checked, not made for a .22. And if all else fails, and you have an extra $ 108.00, you can buy an Outers Foul Out II. I used a Foul Out I about 20 years ago and it works. It's a reverse electroplating system for gun barrels. You plug the chamber, insert the electrode rod, fill the barrel with either lead or copper solution, and turn it on. It causes an electrochemical reaction which draws the lead off the barrel and plates it on to the electrode rod. When you are done the lead just wipes off the rod. You can get it at MidwayUSA.com. Hopefully you can get it clean with the jag. I switched to the copper-plated .22's years ago. Easier to get out the copper than the lead although you do get both even with the copper plated. CCI MiniMag .22LR is what I use. Just tried some Federal American Eagle which seems pretty clean as well. If at all possible depending on the gun clean from the chamber side to avoid damage to the muzzle crown which can affect accuracy. Oh, by the way, I love gun scrubber also. I use it on barrels and any parts I have removed already. Then I apply a good coating of lubricant/ rust preventative as the scrubber strips all oil. Absolutely keep it away from any plastic or finished wood on the gun. There are so many products out there it's mind boggling. I used Break free CLP for years, never had a problem. Now I'm using Mil-Tec. Light coat of synthetic grease on slide rails and oil on all other moving parts. Like I said there will be a million products and a million opinions about what to use. Use what works for you. Safe shooting Mitch
