1. +1 for Gun for Hire. Had two courses there and worth the $.
2. If war is hell, then counter-insurgency is the abyss.
3. Search Fort Dix Range 14. It might be closer, less expensive and offer a better outdoor experience.
4. How often would you like to shoot? Will you be shooting pistol, rifle, shotgun or all three? How far are you willing to drive? Do you have a preference forj outdoor or indoor? In central Jersey it seems like a minimum 30+ mile drive to get to a range.
5. I definately don't want the gov't prohibiting it, but I also don't believe open carry will stop someone from making a grab. Open carry just makes it that much easier for the bad guy(s)to identify a more profitable target and wait until that target is at their most disadvantaged. Sure, I would at times open carry. What I really want is a realistic system for CCW in NJ of which I'm sure we can all agree.
6. This will be unpopular, but while I do support shall issue CCW, open carry seems a bit problematic, especially in more densly populated settings. If I'm a bad guy looking to steal firearms the person carrying concealed is more of a threat than the open carry person. With open carry I have a pretty good idea of what they have, where it is holstered/mounted and how aware that person is of their surroundings. I can then coordinate with my fellow degernates to ambush the open carry person to steal their weapon(s). In an open area this isn't as much a problem as perhaps the streets of Manhattan during rush hour. Should the gov't be stepping on 2a rights? Of course not. Should these questions be asked. Yes. Perhaps I'm just paranoid. Please school me.
7. In any mass casualty incident there will be triage to (hopefully) make best use of limited resources and personel. The triage won't even begin until the scene is considered safe enough to bring in the personel and resources without creating more casualties of skilled personel. In the event of an attack with lingering effects like a nuke or persistent chemical agents the plan would be to move less contaminated folks out of effected areas rather than move personel in. It's grim, but this is why these type of attacks are so pernicious. Prep as best you can and keep your fingers crossed.
8. What the video really drove home for me was how terrible it is for our deployed service men and women (and all the civilians on both sides). I felt sick watching those soldiers arrive on scene and have to walk through the remains of 12 human beings (despite their affiliation) hit by cannon fire. It would take a very callous person to not be effected by that. Seeing the soldier removing the little girl for medevac I just shuddered. I'm glad the gun cameras aren't in color. I know through emt training about distancing and car accidents can be horrific, but this just seems beyond the pale.
9. Wouldn't a chisel, file or epoxy be more expedient.
10. Exactly. I don't know if it will ever become as smooth as a regular bolt action as there is some force needed to push the bolt closed, but it's pretty cool. Someday I'd like to get a little time on an Anshutz rifle, the kind many biathlon shooters used. I think the rifles look cool and the actions (super tuned I'm sure) appeared nearly effortless to actuate.
11. Wanting to add a straight pull action to the collection I bought a Browning T-bolt target/varmint version in .22lr. I'm a crap photographer so apologies in advance. The first is the overview: 22" free floated heavy barrel with recessed crown, 10 round magazine, Browning proprietary rings which seem okay, but at this point I couldn't really tell the difference, and a Prostaff 3-9 I had laying around. I don't know if they fiddled with it at the store, but out of the box the trigger has virtually no uptake or overtravel and breaks at 2.5 pounds. Sweet! Initially the action was quite stiff, but after a thorough cleaning and 150+ cycles it has begun to smooth out. The double helix rotary magazine uses a small geared assembly to make loading rounds smooth and easy. So far 150 rounds in I've yet to experience any feeding or extractio issues.
12. I handled one at the shop today and wonder if anybody has hands-on experience shooting one?
13. Yes, 6% So $12.72 a box roughly. The next least expensive reputable place I found it is Cheaper than dirt has it for 15.12 + shipping for the federal. Tanners also had the Fed 168 grain Sierra Match King BTHP Gold Medal stuff for $22 a box. Cheaper lists it at 24.49 + shipping. I bought the last of that, but they said they expected another delivery Friday weather permitting.
14. I found this on Gunbroker: http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewIt ... =156759147 $12 a box seems like a decent price. Instead of using GB, I just called the store and asked if I could buy it direct from them store at the GB price. The answer was yes so a short trip across the river later I've got some decent .308 for plinking. Tanners sport center is a nicely stocked store with competant and friendly staff. FYI I'm not on their payroll or related, just a happy customer.
15. I ordered a case on 12/7. Shipped on 12/18. It arrived today 12/22 after some UPS 'rescheduling' due to weather and volume. I'm in the 2day UPS zone from this business. It took two weeks and three email prompts, but for $6.07 a box of .223 delivered to my front door it was worth the wait.
16. Big thanks to Rob and Tony at GFH. A pleasant and informative experience.
17. Sig P229 Elite. I'm a sucker for Rosewood grips.
18. Thanks for the input. Bullets were 180 GR. Core-Lokt pointed soft points. Rifle is new so bore is in minty fresh factory condition. (For what that's worth) As this phenomena wasn't seen with the 125 Gr. I know not to use this type of ammunition in this rifle. Now to find other rounds to try out.
19. I was shooting my Ruger No. 1 yesterday at 50 yards and the Remington 180 grain cor-lokt seemed to be disintigrating or tumbling before hitting the target as evidenced by targets with the appearance of buckshot hits and lengthwise holes. Expecting some damage I inspected the bore and it was shiney. I switched to Remington 125 grain 'managed recoil' and this did not happen so I don't think it is the rifle. Anyone ever have a similar experience?
20. Just recently picked up a Mossberg. The lop seem about 1" too long. Anyone have suggestions for a replacement stock? Thanks
21. Who uses a recoil pad when shooting? How much of a difference does it seem to make?
22. Thanks for the heads up. It was $7.98 when I got there. Maybe tomorrow $7.97?
23. Thank you. I've found some PA gunsmiths. The going rate seems to be @112 w/o parkerizing.
