  1. Somebody forgot to tell Finland: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winter_War And this guy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simo_H%C3%A4yh%C3%A4
  2. Semi-related point of curriosity; are bullets effective if fired at something under a couple of feet of water? People always shoot water jugs to test HP expansion, so I'm wondering how quick the energy dump would be.
  3. Physical - B Mental - B Experience - A Emotional - F Rank - Z+ My "B" in physical seems a bit to high since I conceeded to a limited ability to run for duration and being relatively large. It probably gives a bit too much credit for strength & not enough of a deduction for limited cardio. Not sure why I'm tanking emotion. Still one of the best tests I've seen though.
  4. The movie is watchable, but the ending is definitely weak and they deviated so much from the book that the title doesn't even make sense anymore.
  5. I must not be a category driver they favor when underwriting, because even with the NRA discount program they still quoted much higher than my existing Geico poligy & the Progressive policy I ultimately bound.
  6. Revolvers are definetly cool, but I can't help but wonder if the reliability angle is a bit exaggerated given the quality of modern autoloaders. Also, in my limitied experience, revolver failures tend to entail a pretty serious malfunction that cannot be quickly or easily corrected, leaving the weapon fully inoperable [as opposed to common autoloader malfunctions that can be worked around by racking the slide/switching to a fresh magazine/etc]. Then again, I could just be bitter because the cylinder on my newly aquired [used] S&W 686 has refused to open since last saturday. Bringing a new purchase back for service before you've even had the chance to get it dirty is no fun...
  7. I'll conceed that their sticker prices are often higher than some other local sellers, but they almost always have a cash discount and I've found them pretty generous with accesory discounts & free throw ins once you're actually committed to purchasing a given firearm. Plus, in all fairness, they've got a pretty nice retail space you can actually browse comfortably and they have to make up the cost of that somehow. In terms of the staff, perhaps I've been really lucky, but I've always found them pretty laid back & helpful. I can certainly understand some being sour on the place if they've experienced the opposite.
  8. What has always amazed me about the show is that Animal Planet is doing everything they can to make Sea Shepard & it's volunteers look like brave defenders of the whales, but they can't because these people are painfully incompetant. No amount of editing will let AP tell the story they want to tell, because all they have footage of is the crew demonstrationg that they can't accomplish the most basic of tasks without the whole thing getting FUBAR'd and leaving multiple people injured.
  9. I once bought a box of 150 in .45acp because that was literally all they had. Next time I will simply elect not to shoot as 150 rounds of this ammo left my gun filthier than I would have thought possible from a single trip to the range. The price per round was the final slap in the face when I finally looked at the receipt & did the math(was buying a lot and didn't make not of it initially).
  10. I was using my GPS yesterday and saw this place pop up. I haven't been able to find much about it online. I'm wondering if it's something like a single gunsmith fixing guns out of his basement, because I feel like I'd of heard about it already if it was a retail store as there aren't all that many gun stores in NJ to begin with. Anyone familiar with this place?
  11. Went to the Wayne PD yesterday and it would seem that almost nothing is the same from town to town. I also got the vibe that I'll never actually see the replacement FID or PPs issued without regular follow up and will still likely have to deal with a really excessive turnaround time. Basically went like this: Walk up to window with only form indicated as required on PD's website instructions filled out in pen. The clerk tells me, using what can best be described as a 'DMV' tone of voice, that the forms have to be typed & that I also need the "other forms" and turns me away. I mentioned that the website indicates that the additional forms aren't needed if you have made a request within the past three years. She responds that it's my responsibility to provide ALL forms to them at which point they will decide what forms are applicable to the request. Got the obvious sense that she was making it up as she went with her number 1 priority being to turn me away no matter what. Wanting to get this done since I'm not due for another half day anytime soon, I went straight home and pulled up the website. Instructions only say forms have to be legible, not typed, but whatever. Also, links to additional forms are in dis-repair and only bring me to the NJSP general website and are of no use. I figure the only other form it can possibly be is the STS-033. I type out both forms & print twice. I also printed out a page detailing how form SBI 212A must be directly obtained from a PD as I wanted to be able to call BS if she claimed bringing a completed copy of 212A was my responsibility. Get back to the PD window 10 min before they close, I get a much friendlier clerk. I provide her the two copies of both forms. She asks only for $6 for the three permits and nothing more. Gives me a receipt for the $6. She then hands me two blank reference letters. Apparently they don't mail them out and instead it's on me to get both references to fill them out, and then return them myself. This initially annoyed me, but I've come to realize that having physically walked both letters in myself will eliminate any chance for them to get misplaced and will remove that from the excuse pool as this process drags on.
  12. Sorry, I dont' remember much from my inital app. Which $18 is that? Can it be cash or is it going to someone other than the PD I'm putting in the ppwk at?
  13. I'm going to be putting in for an address change on my FID to a different town and will be putting in for 2PPs at the same time. My original FID was issued only 6 months ago, so I would hope new background checks & fingerprinting can be waived. Given that, I'm anticipating only owing $2 per PP. Does that sound right or have I failed to account for something? Anyone else put in similar requests recently & pay something different? Thanks in advance for any input offered.
  14. Anyone else catch it? Some real entertaining firearms stuff. One myth tested was that phone books can be used to bullet proof a car and it proved to be a very fun watch. I found them a bit quick to call it busted when the phone books showed obvious signs of being bullet resistant in small tests. But what made the episode was final test: Three cast memebers used high powered rifles to try and assasinate a "family" of blow up dolls sitting inside a van covered in phonebooks & being driven via remote control. The van's attempt to get clear was halted when Kari scored a .50BMG hit to the engine block. Teh driver took a headshot from a .338 Lapua not long after that. Best TV I've watched in a while And yes, they got plenty of terms wrong, but that kinds stuff doesn't usually bother me unless it actually undercuts their testing methods.
  15. 1. Application type (FID/permit w/ existing FID). First time FID + 2 Permits 2. Police Department where you applied. Chatham Township 3. Name of the person you dealt with at the PD. I believe the detective that handles the process is a Det. Papa 4. Time taken to issue FID and/or permit. Applied sometime in Sept '09 & I recall a turnaround time of 52 days. A friend applying for a duplicate FID & 3 permits had a turnaround time of 31 days during the same time period 5. Documents required by the PD (aside from the standard application and the mental health release form). The only requested forms were consistant with what I understand to be the standard applications 6. Notes - anything pertaining to the application process (unforeseen difficulties, chief of police calling your home, you hiring an attorney, etc.). No real complaints. Police officer that took my apps & fingerprinted me was polite & friendly. Called once at the 30 day mark and spoke with a very polite dispatcher that assured me their department does not deliberately obstruct or delay permit requests and the delay was due only to the volume of requests and not deliberate disinterest in getting it done. Later received a call from the detective advising permits were done. Police officer I dealt with at pickup was polite as well, but did initially advised me incorrectly on a few details of the handgun permits. When I asked for clarification because it didn't sound right, he paused a moment to reread something in a binder and then corrected himself. Overall, I'd say someone Chatham Twp's processing of the permits was relatively tolerable given what others sometimes go through.
  16. Grabbed a flyer for this place at Cherry Ridge this weekend. Apparently the ammo delivery you mentioned is only $5.
  17. How crowded is CRR generally on the non-membership weekends? Mid-day saturday is going to be my first chance to shoot there since I signed up and I'm just wondering if I should be expecting any parking challenges or limited port availability.
  18. I'll be there to sign up on Sunday as well. I've been itching to do some nice outdoor shooting for a while. For those who are already memebers, how much does the folding target stand they sell cost? Just wanna be sure to have enough on me for the membership & a stand.
  19. Forgive my ignorance, but are you guys keeping keeping rounds within their original boxes while storing them in the cans or is the whole point to get rid of the boxes?
  20. I like what I've read about the Remington 870 Wingmaster, but buying it new would be a bit outside of my budget, so I'd need to find a used one.
  21. Does the end of hunting season have any effect on the supply and/or average price of used shotguns, or are those who sell their shotguns too few in number to generate a noticable effect? I'm looking to buy a used shotgun at some point, but I'm in no hurry and was just wondering if their was a particular time of year worth targeting for my future purchase.
  22. Hey Anthony, I was wondering, what's level of shooter is the "Personal Protection in the Home" course primarily intended for? Complete beginners? Casual shooters? Advanced shooters?
  23. Sold out already. Oh well, I had given up on locating one of these a while ago and settled on the 336 in .30-30, which proved much easier to find. Still...would love to add one of these to the collection at some point.
  24. Yes. I bought mags for a Glock a owned at the time. They did not require any LE credentials for that. I believe I also bought some 223 or 9mm ammo from them when they had a special. Awesome. Thanks for the reply. I'll give them a shot.
