  1. Just ask their name and ask them to take you off the calling list. They will comply.
  2. In a month or two I will schedule another date. Anyone own an ATV? I had a vision today of driving down the course in an ATV with my big ol' .44. The course is too small right now to pull this off, but it would be awesome when it is over 600 feet long. The ATV needs to be big enough so I can sit on the back and do my job as RSO. We would need to do some dry runs to test safety... but I think we can make it work. On a side note, I have updated my website based on feedback and observations over the weekend. I now allow outside ammo and ammunition on the tactical range at a rate of $100 per hour. The logic is that on a normal range you can have 10 guys shooting at once for $10 each under the observation of one safety officer. This is a reasonable rate that grosses $100 per hour. On the tactical range one shooter gets the whole range to himself, so I am targeting the same gross. People have the option of coming with two or more people and sharing the time and cost between them. The rate covers my time as RSO, Insurance, property taxes, money already invested in the range and upcoming improvements. Realistically, I never expect to ever make a profit doing this. This is not a business... it is a hobby. I would like other people to share in this hobby with me and help contribute to the cost and upgrades. When we do the NJGF Group Shoots, I should be able to keep the rate at $30 per person in anticipation of 20 people showing up for the day.
  3. I got a very interesting email last night inquiring about night-shooting. What do you guys think about shooting after dark in the winter (5pm to 8 pm) in the Tactical Range lit by Tiki Torches?
  4. As a former NYC resident I can tell you... DON'T DO IT! Its not just a matter of paying $400. Its $400 every three years. That is just for pistol. Rifle or shotgun is another $300 every three years. It takes upwards of 8 months to get approved and then you have to register all your guns. They will let you only register a max or 4 or 5. Then you have to pay an income tax to NYC plus have to deal with having your car attacked on a regular basis with various parking tickets. Plus get drenched with tolls in order to get in or out of that infernal city. That Cities aptitude toward cars is much the same as their attitude toward guns... YOU DON'T NEED EM. They will two you car for a mere $200 owed and make you pay $700 to get it back. If you must got to NYC for business related reasons on a regular basis, just get a small dive apt there, but don't make yourself a resident. Also be aware that commuting from Staten Island to Manhatten is very inconvenient. You can't just hope a train that goes straight there. Many people take the ferry, which come with the problem of how to get to the ferry from your house. Something that needs to be thought out in advance. One of my greatest satisfactions in leaving NYC is that I no longer pay taxes to anti-gunners. When you factor in the living expenses and taxes, you don't make more money working in NYC. I can't tell you how happy I am that I got bitten by the gun-bug, because it gave me the incentive I needed to finally get out of that cursed city. I wish I had gotten into guns 12 years ago.
  5. We had 16 targets. The goal was to double-tap each target. They could take a third shot if they knew they missed. People took between 32 and 40 shots per run. I kept score per run. The scores improved after they went through a few times even through I was moving the targets. They had about 4 seconds to hit their target from cover and 2 seconds if they did not have cover. If they failed to do so I marked a strike against them. If they misses after three shots it was a strike. If they reloaded out in the open that was also a strike. The goal was to get the lowest points. I assumed that the enemy had like weapons. So if they had a pistol, their enemy had pistols only. That is significant to pistol users who needed to get closer to some of the targets to get a good shot. In some of those cases they lost a point not for being exposed to the far target they were approaching, but because as they approached they exposed themselves to another closer target that they did not see because they were fixated on the far target. Rifles generally did much better but pistols had a fun and challenging time. Some of the tall grasses on my property have been producing seeds. I have been gathering up those seeds and spreading them in the Zombie Course. I have a vision that by this time next year it might be necessary to go through the course with a machete in one hand and a pistol in the other
  6. Six people came to the Zombie Shootout today. I don't believe any of them were from this forum. Two people from NJ, Three from NY, and one from PA. I ran the course about 4 hours, which was the point at which they shot all the ammo they came with. It was a fun day, everyone had a nice time. No of the shooters had ever done anything like this before. Everyone was very safety conscience. The feedback I got was more along the lines of "grow tall grass faster", rather then make the range longer.
  7. I stated I was typing on a cell phone when I made the comments. I did not have the benefit of an edit option. As I mentioned earlier, there are more US dollars outside the US then inside. The reason is not just tax issues but also sheltering money from litigation. Almost every businessman in the US seems to have at least 2 lawsuits pending against him. Prior to 2000 the Cayman Islands was the hotspot for burring ones treasure. The Island had about 50k residents and 500 banks. Those banks were not for the locals to store their pineapples. By the late nineties the Caymen Islands got a little too cozy with the US govt and businessmen started taking their money elsewhere. The Caymen Islands still remains one of the top banking centers in the world. If all that money came back into the US in a short amount of time you would have inflation like has never been seen in US history.
  8. Just to be clear... I was not advocating any false filings or trying to justify it. I was just giving an explantion to a direct question to explain the apearence of a trade imbalance. Beyond that, every businessman can weigh the risks and rewards for himself.
  9. Sorry for the separate post, I am away all weekend ad typing on the phone. With regard to false documentation...etc. I don't think you have been to China. To start... nothing moves in or out of port until the right person at the port has been bribed. They can delay a container for weeks and then lose it. The port bribes are just the tip of the iceberg but it sets the pace for everything else. China is the dirtiest, filthiest and most corrupt place on earth. If you want to do business there you do it there way or stay home.
  10. I provided a link to the actual 1040 tax form of 1913 that shows the tiers. The average income I posted is text book. It is an avg of all incomes. It will be skewed higher by the JP Mogan's and Rockefeller's of the day. The important point I was making is that the first tax tier starts at 20K per the tax return I posted. Regardless if you use my income average or your median the middle class and upper middle class was entirely exempt.
  11. I thought I made a post detailing the Current Debt... I don't see it... I must have accidentally deleted it. Well here goes. The national debt is some ridicules number in the area of 3 Trillion. Does anyone know that this number actually represents? To put it into perspective, 1 billion seconds is about 30 years. 1 Trillion seconds is about 31 thousand years. Who on this planet has that much money to lend to the US Government? No One. The govt borrows a little money where it can to keep up appearances but what the number really represents is how much money the US govt Prints. When they print money they back it up with a treasury note. That is how they balance their books and make it seem like there are not really "just printing money"... or rather in this electronic age giving themselves electronic credits. You will notice a clear patten. Both Clinton and Bush had 7 strong years of economic growth, followed by a recession in their last year. That is because in their last year they had to "reset" the dollar. It becomes plainly obvious if you look at commodities charts that the US experienced a steady pace of inflation in the first seven years of both Clinton's and Bush's terms followed by deflation in their last year. The fact of the matter is that recession don't just "happen" they are engineered. A recession is like letting the air out before the balloon over inflates and pops into a depression. Depression were quite common in the 1800's in the US before we learned to control them with engineered recessions. If you recall Bush SR lost reelection to Clinton because of a recession in his 4th year caused by the Fed tightening up because of inflation fears. The Federal Reserve's main job is to stay independent and fight inflation. However, by acting as they did in the 3rd term of Bush Sr, they ignited a recession that changed the outcome of the election. This is a big NO-NO. It stands to reason that the Fed has since made it policy not to do any recession fighting prior to any elections... Hence, the Clinton and Bush pattern of 8th year recessions where the fed would have the least impact on the outcome of an election. Both Clinton and Bush Jr, inherited recessions and were out within one year. So the question to ask is why is Obama not out within one year. He did his fair share of money printing through the stimulus package. So why is this economy not booming? I hinted at the answer earlier in that he has failed to gain the support of the business community earlier. One thing is for sure. If Obama is reelected, you can expect another recession in his 8th year as the Fed takes back some of the money they have been printing. If he looses the election, the Fed will move to take it back immediately and create another recession in the first year of the next president. I am not taking political sides here. I am just explaining facts as they are seen by businessmen. The motto of any good businessman is that "we can make money in any economy". The only difference is that in a recession economy there is less trickling down of the profits. I usually get paid for giving out this sort of Info B) Enjoy the weekend.
  12. Like I said... I was going to give it to you guys straight. IRS knows what is going on. It would cost them many more times to audit and prove tax evasion then the money they would collect in the end. The IRS estimates a 100% error rate on the tax returns of Sub S corporations. They only audit 1 to 2 % of all tax returns. The IRS functions as a business. They only go after cases that are almost certain to be profitable to them. The IRS usually attacks non reported w2 and 1099 income, home business deductions, business car deductions, insurance deductions, travel and entertainment deductions, executive perk deductions. The reason they go after this stuff is because it is easy work for them. They also go after a few high profile cases just to get publicity and keep everyone scared. That is how they work. I never said the business that I work for does anything of this nature I was just talking hypothetically
  13. I forgot to say how brilliant I think this post was That aside... the average businessman is more concerned about his potential tax liability then he is about his competition. That is contrary to free market ideology where government is not suppose to interfere. Taxes are way to high when peoples actions are influenced by the tax consequences. Take a look at the Form 1040 from 1913: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-utl/1913.pdf The first tier was 1% (20k to 50K) First 3k is exempt. The second.........2% (50k to 75K) The third..........3% (75k to 100k) The fourth..........4% (100k to 250K) The fifth..........5% (250k to 500k) The sixth and final 6% (500k plus) The average income in 1913 was only 15k. So the vast majority of people were exempt. Do you know how rich you were in 1913 to be making 500k a year. These are tax rates at which the the govt would have the people support and cooperation. This is how they got the 16th Amendment passed. The American people would have never had allowed an Income Tax Amendment to the Constitution if they knew how far the congress would have gone with it. The people have responded in kind by working around it.
  14. The number is completely skewed by the false reporting I indicated in my earlier post. The US GDP really is a lot higher then it appears to be. Regardless of how well China appears to be doing on paper... the people there are miserable. You are better off being poor in the US then rich in China. I have no doubt that China will implode on itself one way or another. Most likely with a popular uprising followed by a hard govt crack down. In the long run they are also likely to have boarder disputes with their neighbors, Russia, India and Pakistan who are also heavily armed.
  15. I certainly was not "fearmongering". I was doing the exact opposite and making a point that in a capitalist system people figure out a way to work around any governement obstructs to do what is in their own self-interest. All the small business owners I have come into contact with in the last two years are doing OK through the recession. They may not be running at 110% capacity, but running at 80% is plenty good enough. They way the capitalist system works best is that you work as an employee only long enough to gain the experience and finance necessary to go into business for yourself. That is suppose to be every person's goal.
  16. I have been an accountant for over 15 years. I have had the benefit of having come into contact with hundreds of companies and their owners. I have also owned an two businesses in that time. Currently I am a Chief Financial Officer for an import/export company. I can give you an understanding of US economics in a way that few people you meet in your everyday routine can. I will not give you a text book answers or idealistic answers. My answers have nothing to do with the way things are suppose to work, but the way they really work. Lets address the Foreign Trade Deficit. Officially the stats show that their is more value going out of this country then going in. As the CFO of an import/export company, do you seriously think we don't make a profit on every single trade that we make? Do you seriously think that the owners of any company are going to submit to the ridiculously high taxes that the US Govt demands? Companies have an incentive to under-report profits, hence the illusion of a trade deficit. The fact is that at once you get above the point were you are working for a salary, taxes are voluntary. People objectively consider how much they have to pay in taxes and how much it costs to beat he system. As long as it cost less to beat the tax system, people will take that option. The way it works is simple. Hypothetically, If I buy a product from China that costs $1, I will have my agent in China record the cost as $8 on the invoice. I then sell it for $10 in the US and show a profit of $2 to the IRS. Meanwhile my agent in China wires $6 to my bank account in Germany or some other country and keeps $1 for himself for his assistance. The fact is that there is more US dollars outside the US then inside the US. The issue of lower manufacturing inside the US is of little consequence. It is no different then no agriculture inside cities. The cities import their food from the surrounding rural areas and still prosper by providing services. Services are valued more then manual labor. The value of labor is bases on how long it takes to learn to do a job. Assembly work is designed to be easy to learn. Each person on the assembly line does the same thing over and over again. The issue of job creation is another issue. There is a "hiring protest" against the current administration that wants to raise taxes on anybody making over 200K. Most of the people who are in a position to hire people all make over 200k. Most small shop owners make over 200K. Even if they don't report it they still feel threatened by the current administrations attitude. There position is that if the government will not look out for their interests, they will not help the govt. The current president has never worked in private business and does not understand all these things because they are not in a text book. He fails to understand that if he wants new jobs, he has to gain the support of the people who create those jobs. I am not being political... I am just stating a fact when I tell you that the people who do the hiring feel that Obama is a socialist and do not trust him. They will not help him. Hiring people is helping him and they will not hire if at all possible. They can afford to wait him out until the next election or even the one after that.
  17. I need a head count of who is coming this Sunday by Thursday Sep 23 so I can make a post on my website that the range will be closed to the general public. If I don't get enough people to commit to the event I will have to cancel/postpone the NJGF group shoot.
  18. I was shooting my 1858 Black Powder Revolver, .44, 8" barrel, at 25 yards a few weeks ago. I was getting a 6 inch grouping (standing, two hands). My group seemed a about 2 inches left then normal. I then moved to 75 yards and was about a foot the the left. I decided to pull out my .357 to determine see how a different gun would do. Using a Taurus .357 with 5.5" barrel I was putting 2 out of 6 shots in the 12 inch circle at 75 yards. The grouping was pretty even around the target. I concluded that the first revolver I used mush have had the front sight slightly off. I also have a .44 Walker with a 9" barrel. I have been want to see how that does at 150 feet... I just have not had the time, because I have to factor in clean up time on Black Powder guns. The Walker has these same muzzle energy as a .357.
  19. I have encountered a number of people on my range with this problem. 70% of the time the issue is that their dominant eye is not the one they think. Just because you write with your right hand, does not mean that your right eye is dominant. The hand that squeezes the trigger is determined by your dominant eye, not your dominant hand. There is a common test to determine which is your dominant eye. Cup both your hands together and leave a small one inch hole. Rest your hands by your belt and stare at a small target about 20 feet away with both eyes open. Keep staring and quickly raise your hands to look through them at that target with your hands fully extended. Keep staring at the target though the hole in your hands and now slowly bring your hands back to your eye. Do this a few times and you will know for sure which is your dominant eye. You can further verify this my extending you finger out and pointing at a target with both eyes open. Now close you non-dominate eye. Your finger should not move. Point again and with both eyes open. This time close your dominant eye. The finger should seem to shift over. You just verified which finger controls your pointing. About 5% of the time I encounter people who are Omni-Dominant. In this case neither eye is dominant. I happen to be such a person myself. For me, when looking to my right, my right eye takes over... but when looking to the left, the left eye takes over. All I have to do is a quick wink with either eye when I come on target and the other one will establish dominance. With practice, you can get this to happen seamlessly as you draw and come on target. The other 25% of the time, I find that people with such a problem are using the dominant eye and correct hand, but there are varying degrees of eye dominance. For some people one eye seems to have just a little dominance over the other. In this case it just takes practice to get that dominant eye to establish itself faster. A quick wink with the non-dominant eye, can aid the process.
  20. I know its just an opinion... but I have done a lot of testing with the .22mag into various media. I think the penetration is adequate. It is not something I would use if I was working in any security related job... but it is something I can wear all day everyday while splitting logs, watering my garden, watching TV, preparing a BBQ... I think this is an important consideration. Before I got my .22 mini-mag, I carried my .38spl about 20% of the time. I still carry it 20% of the time, but I am carrying the mini-revolver the other 80%. As far as recommending a .22 mag or .22RL for self defense... I asked the question of my Training Counselor when I became certified to teach Personal Protection in the Home. His position is absolutely yes. Especially if that is what you are most competent with. 6 shots on target with a .22LR is more effective then 6 missed shots with a .357. Just to be clear, the point of my reply is less to argue the effectiveness of a .22LR or Mag... and more to point out that I was not just making up my own answers, but drawing from very experienced sources. It also happens that one on my neighbors was over my Range on Saturday to request training on his .22LR/.22Mag single action Ruger that he bought back in 1972. He had it all these years as his personal home defense gun. He also wanted to know why he could not hit anything more then 10 feet away. It was just a matter of adjusting his grips and his was inside an 8 inch circle at 50 feet every time. Should I have turned him away? Its the only gun he has. Should I have said go save up some money and come back with a 9mm, sleep with a baseball bat next to your bed until then? No, it does not make sense to me. What makes sense, is use what you have and get good with it. Interestingly enough... before I moved to PA, my primary home defense firearm was a model 1858 black powder revolver.44 cal. It was the only thing I could easily access in NY. My Training Counselor also informed me that he once had a student that came to one of his Personal Protection in the Home classes with a Black Powder Revolver for the same reason. I have to work within people's physical, financial and legal limitations.
  21. Thanks for the explanations for the .40 and .357sig. How are the .40's loaded into a revolver. Do you have to use that moon-clip? Is it possible to load one round at a time? If not, then I understand the mechanics.
  22. I know this post is a bit old... but I just wanted to say that as an NRA Instructer, the .22 Heritage is what I use to train people on pistol for the first time. I highly recommend it to them as a first pistol because it also comes with the .22 Mag Cylinder, which I consider respectable for personal defense. So for $200 they get both a target gun and a personal defense gun. My preferred carry is an NAA mini-revolver with the larger boot grips. I carry it with .22mag. It is lighter then my keys and I am accurate enough at 21 feet. Keep shopping around. I paid $200 for mine back in May 2010. You should be able to get it for as low as $180.
  23. I don't have a .40 yet. The .40 is a rimless cartrige which seems more natural to a Simi-auto pistol. How does it stay in the chamber if it has no rim? http://www.gunpundit.com/1487.php I was looking at this picture and I don't understand how the rimless .40's don't just fall through the chambers when you point it down. I hate the .357 Sig. In my opinion they really screwed up the design, when they took a .40 case and just put a 9mm bullet in there. Why on earth use a thicker case that will limit the capacity in a magazine. Why not just use a regular .357 mag or something along those lines. They could have had all the power benefits of the .357 mag with the high capacity of a 9mm.
  24. For rifle I use the folding muffs from Walmart which have a low profile and don't hit the stock. They cost $13 and work well. I prefer to use the regular $7 Walmart muffs when I can because they do work better due to their thicker insulation. The plugs in my opinion are only good for .22. If you shoot three times a week, like I often do, the plugs are not even good enough for .22 in my opinion. Remember, hearing damage is cumulative. You don't have to feel pain to be doing damage. Protecting you ears is not just a matter of plugging the hole. The outer ear still funnels the sound in. Sound travels faster though liquids and fastest through solids. Ohhh... the plugs are good for going out to loud clubs. I get ones that are flesh colored. I cut them in half and insert them. Since I cut them in half they can not be seen at all and I don't look like a dork at a concert.
