  1. So I may or may not have gone a bit off the deep end. As some of you may have seen I had listed my FN SPR for sale earlier. Well its currently off to its new home out of state and I replaced it with: Yep, Accuracy International. Specifically the 2014 model of the AI AX: This thing is absolutely gorgeous. Some of the best engineering I have ever seen: Heavy as all hell though. Not great for long walks: But the coolest thing about the rifle is the modularity. You can completely break down the rifle with a single 4mm Hex wrench (which is stored in the buttstock). You can even remove the barrel and replace it with another short action, 308 bolt face caliber. Or you can break it down for storage/transport: All-in-all, totally worth it: The barrel is a 24" 1/10 twist Bartlien blank chambered by Dave Tooley. I'm also using the Harris 9-13 bipod off the FN as well as a Vortex Razor HD Gen II 4.5-27x56 in a Spuhr mount.
  2. Actually you don't need to take either the NRA Basic Pistol course or the NRA First Steps pistol courses to be an NRA Pistol instructor. Its strongly recommended so you know how the course is supposed to work, but not technically a requirement. You should just be able to go to any NRA Master Instructor and they will be able to run the course for you for a fee. Its a two step process. You need to take the NRA BIT course first and then take the NRA Pistol Instruction course. The BIT is a basics of instruction course that walks you through how you're supposed to teach ANY NRA course, then you can go to the Pistol instruction course where you learn how to (and actually do) teach that course. I would reach out to Dawn at Shoot NJ, that's where I got my Pistol Inst. Cert from. I can't speak as to how useful it would be towards your end goal though.
  3. Also remember that if you are using a Second Focal Plane reticle, you have to perform these calculations at a specific magnification level for them to be accurate.
  4. What is the twist rate of your barrel? 168's will be fine for 300 yards. 175's are better if you want to reach out further.
  5. Lastly (I promise) I have a pair of .22 rifles. One bolt gun and one Semi: The bolt gun is a CZ455 Varmint SST with the fluted barrel. Because of the recall CZ issued, it no longer has the SST, but CZ was kind enough to swap it into a Boyd's Tacticool stock for me at no charge. I replaced the bolt knob with an enlarged, knurled version, but otherwise it is stock. Glass-wise it is wearing a Mueller 6-24x scope. Unfortunately I don't have any recent pictures of the CZ but its a solid MOA shooter. My semi is a Ruger 10/22. I originally purchased it at a steal and all thats left of the original carbine is the Receiver and the bolt. I've made the following upgrades: - Kidd 18" Fluted Match Grade barrel - Kidd Machined V-Block - Kidd drop-in trigger group. Single stage trigger set to 2.5 lbs. I'm using their speed lever as a mag release. - Kidd Extended Bolt Handle - Kidd recoil spring + guide rod - Kidd extractor - Kidd Polymer recoil buffer - Kidd Pic scope base. - Victor Company Titan 10/22 Stock It is wearing a Harris Bipod and a Mueller 4-14x scope. I apologize in advance for the crappy picture. This thing can put 10 rounds of wolf match into the same ragged hole. Its amazing how accurate these Kidd barrels are.
  6. Next up we have my Noveske SPR in .223. Specs are as follows: - Upper (Noveske-built) - VLTOR Upper - 18" Noveske SPR Profile barrel (Polygonal Rifling) w/ Pinned Battlecomp 1.0 - 15" Noveske NSR rail system (looking to upgrade to the 16.7") - Noveske Match bolt and BCG - Noveske Raptor charging handle - Lower (Self-built) - Noveske Chainsaw Lower - Geissele SSA-E trigger (may swap to Hi-Speed Match DMR) - Magpul MIAD Grip - BAD-ASS Ambi Safety - Magpul BAD Lever - Magpul MOE Rifle Stock - Stock rifle buffer, spring, and tube. - Optic is a Vortex 2.5-10x32 in an ADM Recon QD Mount. This is an older pic where it is wearing my old Atlas bipod. Its been replaced by a Harris. Other parts have changed. Above is latest config. 1.2 MOA 10 round groups. I'm still working on getting a load for her:
  7. Next up we have my Tikka T3 Varmint in .223. Hands-down the most accurate factory gun I've ever seen. This one has also been heavily modified: - Cut + Recrown barrel to 18" (Jeff at Heritage Guild in Easton) - Straight Flute barrel (for looks mostly) - Spiral flute bolt (looks mostly) - Polish bolt body and coat grooves Sniper Grey cerakote (the polish really smooths out the bolt movement) - Coat barreled action Sniper Grey - Dropped into a Manners 95% Carbon Fiber stock (super light) - Installed Hinterlands bolt knob (drop in, really easy install) - Modified by CDI bottom metal to accept their magazine system. Allows rifle to run .223 AICS magazines. Its wearing a Bushnell 6-24x50 FFP G2DMR scope on an EGW base with Vortex Precision matched rings. Great optic at a great price point. Also using a Harris Bipod (pictures have an old Atlas bipod which I've since sold. This thing routinely shoots 1/2 MOA at 100 yards. With a factory barrel, I can't complain about those numbers. And some group shots with factory match ammo:
  8. Oh man. I'm going to be spending a lot of time in this forum.... Here is my FN SPR in .308. It was bedded and threaded by Tactical Coordination. They also installed a badger bolt knob and modified it to use AICS magazines. The stock was modified to use the KMW Loggerhead cheek riser system which works better than the factory kydex version. I'm running a Harris 9-13 and a Bushnell XRS 4.5-30x scope in a Spuhr mojunt. Its a sub-MOA rifle with the right load (see cherry-picked 3 shot group). I'm actually going to be selling it sometime next year to put towards an AI AX.
  9. I used this on my Android device. Took it with me to BHTC Beginner course and did extremely well. I've since sold my Galaxy S5 and am back with an iPhone 6. While they do offer Litz's program for iOS, I had previously purchased Ballistic AE and it works extremely well. Either would be a great choice.

And here I thought I was the only one who can't shoot H&K handguns because of trigger finger pain. Happens to me across their whole line. Never really looked into investigating it but the trough makes sense as a cause.
  11. Actually yes, that really really helps. I will have to find time to head down there. Thanks!
  12. My friend (not a member) is looking to purchase a modern handgun for home defense and competition use. He has tried the majority of modern handguns out there but is still missing a few test cases in order to make a final decision. He was enamored with the Steyr when he handled it the first time a while ago, but wants to shoot one in order to see if he likes it. Ditto on the CZ SP01. Does anyone have either of these two guns that would be willing to give myself and him a few rounds down the pipe to try them out? I would normally rent one but i can't find a range that has the Steyr or CZ for rental.
  13. Give me a year and i'll either have an AT or an AXMC in .308. Still working on which one I want.
  14. Last I checked there were 21 rifle lanes (one or two reserved handicapped ones, not sure what their policies on these are), and A-I on the pistol range making 9 pistol lanes.
  15. So since I started this thread I figure I'd be the first to give an AAR on today's lesson. First off big thanks to everyone that showed up and and even bigger thanks to Mr. Stu for teaching us what he knows, designing practice stages, and yelling at us when we were doing something stupid. My takeaways: 1. Muzzle discipline, muzzle discipline, muzzle discipline. I was especially having issues in the beginning flagging my own hand when re-holstering. Took me a while to break that habit. 2. Sunblock. Murphy's law states that you will never have shade. Plan accordingly. Hats help too. 3. Water. You forget how necessary it is when you're having fun. 3. Appropriate clothing. Going down for a kneel nearly tore out the crotch of my jeans. Loose pants are good, shorts are better in the summer. Also means I have to lose weight. 4. SA/DA handguns can be done but I think strikers are a better idea. Can't wait for my M&P pro to get here so that my P226 can be my permanent nightstand gun 5. Malfunctions happen. Drill and deal with it. Had a factory American Eagle round fail to fire even after multiple solid primer hits. Should have dealt with it immediately instead of trying to get it to ignite. I for one definitely feel ready to start trying some competitions. Anyone else that has anything to add feel free. Thanks again Stu!
  16. Nope. Not the CORE. I figured if I had the option of easily mounting a sight I'd be too tempted not to. What do you have mounted on yours? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  17. I'll be bringing my P226 Elite in 9mm. Only because my M&P Pro 5" is stuck waiting for my permit to get in. I'd love to try out the XD. Whats the longest range you can shoot at Easton? I may bring my Noveske for some fun post training.
  18. I'm in. Putting it on my calendar now. May see if one of my friends is interested in going too.
  19. I should be free actually. I'll know for sure closer to the event. What would the time/place end up being?
  20. I wish I could but work keeps me out of the house for the majority of weekdays.
  21. I've been meaning to join CJRPC to get that extra 100 yards over Dix. My FN SPR is kind of boring at 200. I'm generally free on Sundays but it looks like New Holland is a 2 hour drive away from me so it would only be a periodic trip.
  22. So it looks like my first match will be on 5/25 at Easton. I have a few questions out via e-mail to Ken (listed as match director) and am still waiting on a response. In the mean time, I had a few questions about what class I would be in. The handgun I plan on using is a Sig P226 Elite. This was the handgun that originally came with the wooden grips. I've since swapped those out for the slimmer e2 grips and like them quite a bit more. Now, looking at the IDPA rules, it seems that checkering on any non-replaceable frame part and front cocking serrations put me in ESP. Does this still apply if the gun comes from the factory with those modifications? The rules are somewhat confusing as this is a production gun, not a special one-off. Also, anyone else planning on going to Easton on the 25th?
  23. Yea, it doesn't help that i'm not in the best shape so I'll have to keep that in mind. Maybe i'll wait for the next smaller match. Thanks I took a look at the classifier stages and they're pretty interesting. All stuff i'll need to practice. Thanks for the advice (i'll have to adjust my terminology). I've been dry training my draw and reload at home for about a half hour a night. Still working on getting those motions down, especially the part where I don't completely miss the magwell. I'll be at Ft. Dix tomorrow practicing live fire drawing and firing. The DA/SA pull is killing my accuracy on the first shot. I'm already looking into an M&P.
  24. Thanks Bob. I have 4 total carriers so I may be able to do USPSA. Looking at my calendar i'm not going to be able to make the match on the 18th unfortunately. I'll definitely show up next month at Somerset. Looks like theres a match I can attend on 5/25 match at Easton. I took the NRA First Steps pistol course 4 or so years ago, would that be a sufficient safety course to be able to shoot? Also there appears to be one 5/11 at OBJRPC. Anyone going to be there? What is the process for obtaining a classification? I am already a member of the IDPA.
  25. Thanks very much everyone! I think I shall register over at somerset for the match coming up on the 18th. I want to make sure I have everything I need. Here's my list of equipment. What am I missing? - Pistol (Sig P226 Elite) - Magazines (3 10 round, 2 15 round) - Which should I bring? - Belt - Holster (Comp-Tac) - Magazine Carriers - Ammunition - How much do I need? - Ears - Eyes - Cover garment - Any suggestions?
