  1. Howdy Howdy - welcome to un-anonymity
  2. Welcome to the forum - I can commiserate with you, my new home is supposed to be very slow as well...
  3. Welcome to the Forums - lucky guy, you have the Cherry Hill range in your backyard.
  4. Welcome to the forums, Nickel
  5. Hey there Bryan - welcome to the forum!
  6. Amateur radio licenses allow you to use the FCC regulated frequencies and more powerful radios. I think you can get powerful Citizens Band (CB) radios that might get you the same thing - I'm not exactly positive.
  7. I'd recommend getting licenses as a HAM radio operator. You'll get the knowledge and creds to buy a 2 meter radio. Most handhelds are going to be limited at 5 watts which could get you 20 mile radius if you were high up and without obstructions. Else, you'll be able to use repeaters to reach out. Otherwise, you could get a car/truck radio that could be in the 50 - 75 watt range and definitely reach out and touch someone. My father and I were able to talk on 2m radios when he was in Portland, ME and I was on Mt. Washington. He had a 50watt car radio and I had a 5watt handheld.
  8. I wonder what the psychological effect of hearing someone fire up a chainsaw from the upstairs bedroom would have on a would-be home invader... I will use whichever firearm I have available, is serviceable, and I can accurately put rounds on target with... then bring something non-mechanical, e.g. knife, baseball bat, curtain rod etc. as redundancy.
  9. Ray - no certification or certificates - it operated as a fun gun shoot or something like that. I did take my UT CCW course back in MA... I should submit that now...
  10. It was fun meeting everyone and learning about IDPA. Thanks to Pizza Bob and J0n in particular for taking me and Kate under their wings during the day. A big thanks to Tom for allowing us to observe.
  11. There was no real main instructor - there were a couple people but most of the "in charge" people didn't give their names or if they did, I missed them. There was one helper named Rex and another named Anthony They wanted $60 for the one hour of shooting. 6 guns, total rounds were probably somewhere around 70rds plus 2 shotshells.
  12. I didn't - I'm just coming to observe, meet people, and learn more about gun games.
  13. So what are the office hours now? The police website only says that you must apply in person and doesn't say anything about where (within the PD) to go or when to show up. Sad day :-(
  14. Girl gave permission for me to attend and I think she's coming too. We'll plan to be there a little early to get the briefing and meet people as they show up. I'll be in green pants and black polo if anyone is planning to attend. See you there!
  15. Just got back from the Home Defense Site shoot at the Bayonne PBA #7. It was a fairly decent introductory shoot where participants moved through 6 different ports shooting a variety of firearms. There were two different deals going on at once - one from Groupon and the other from Living Social. The biggest surprise was that all of the weapons were .22 caliber. Though the deal copy wasn't specific when referring to 6 different guns, I made the assumption that they would be in different calibers as well. PROS Good, low pressure environment for beginner shooters One instructor/supervisor per gun port to control muzzles and reload for first time shooters and to challenge more experienced shooters Targets were set very close (7-15ft) so even first time shooters were able to get some rounds on target Instructors gave more experienced shooters challenges (e.g. shoot at a specific point on the target) that kept it fun for all levels Even the shy women stepped up and shot the big bad 12ga CONS There was some confusion about the two different deals going simultaneously - some people had issue with how this was handled (GF and I had no issues) Safety discipline (actual safety on firearms) was not mentioned or practiced on the range. I got strange looks when I set the safety after each string of fire More shooters than could be accommodated at the ports were brought to the firing line - this cramped the space and could have been a safety issue if something bad had happened Overall, GF and I had a good experience and it was a decent introduction for me to the Bayonne range and for Kate to shooting... without me being the bad guy if she didn't like it. Thanks to all that had commented originally.
  16. I was thinking more along the lines for shooting sports classification, truthfully.
  17. That frame safety looks near impossible to hit in the heat of the moment unlike the 1911. I'm locked out of S&W's website here at work - can anyone see whether it's Safe Action or other?
  18. Hey, Rich. Welcome to the board. I'm also moving to NJ for my girlfriend but I'm up in Boston now. PM me if you want some of the resources that I've found as a n00b.
  19. There is nothing inexpensive about gun ownership in Massachusetts. I also thing they're charging premium as it's never fired and comes with lots of legal highcap mags which would easily be $30-$60 in MA.
  20. Here's the link: http://fsguns.com/specials.html The copy reads: This rifle was purchased new from Ohio Ordnance and never fired by the owner. It comes with 10 pre-ban (New, old surplus) 20 round magazines, original magazine loader and heavy duty black padded sling. $4,500 These guys are decent dealers for the Boston area - not sure if anyone is in the market but I know I don't see many of these, especially in display grade with pre-ban high-cap mags. Trap/Skeet

I shot Trap, Skeet, and Modern Skeet with my father using 20ga shotguns all my life - I hit them just fine. Choke selection will be important for either sport. TJ has it right - go for the longer barrel.
