  1. No definite predictions are possible without knowing the exact size, shape and placement of the initiating landslide. And even knowing that the waveforms would still be an estimate based on a model, and the incursion into the continent in specific places would vary widely because of the disparate terrain characteristics. If you look at a topographical map of your area of interest and compare the anticipated wave height to the elevation curves you can get an idea of how far in it would go at that location. Bigger wave = further inland. According to that article I posted one of the worst case scenarios would put 82 to 98 foot waves on Florida's beaches. How far inland would you have to go to find land 100 feet above sea level?
  2. More good news. If New York City and Philadelphia are inundated and removed from the equation, New York and Pennsylvania instantly turn Red. If Miami goes too then Florida is a lock.
  3. Too late to take out flood insurance? Here's the good news. If a tsunami does hit they'll blame it on climate change. And Trump.
  4. If you know anything about the Canary Islands, and specifically the Cumbre Vieja volcano on La Palma, you know about the landslide threat posed by an eruption. That landslide, depending on it's size, could produce a tsunami that would wash up on the entire eastern seaboard of the United States. That volcano has had several thousand eruptions earthquakes over the last five to ten days and is now spewing lava all over the island. I saw a very detailed video analysis of this volcano and the island several years ago, and the threat posed to the U.S. is no joke. If a landslide big enough to threaten the eastern U.S. did occur, we'd have about nine hours warning before it hit, depending on what state you lived in. Do you think they'd announce it and cause a stampede? 'Could Last Weeks' - 5,000 Evacuated As Canary Islands Volcano Eruption Worsens | ZeroHedge Here's a four page paper discussing the possible threats. La_Palma_grl.pdf (ucsc.edu) My house in NJ sits at approximately 950', so I don't think we'd get lapped. Note: It's had several thousand earthquakes to go along with an unspecified number of eruptions.
  5. This is not the original story on this photo, but a recap of the event. Did you notice the cuffed shorts? What If the FBI Threw an Insurrection and Nobody Came? - American Thinker "The pièce de resistance was this photo making the rounds on social media and the subject of endless memes, featuring a half dozen 30-something men, tall, lean, muscular, with matching watches and sunglasses hiding watchful eyes, short haircuts, pistol shaped bulges in their pockets, trying to look like MAGA protesters when their dress is more suited for a group Sunday brunch in Brooklyn or an Abercrombie & Fitch catalogue photo shoot."
  6. For today's laugh see if you can spot a Trump supporter in this group photo taken at the September 18 'Jan 6 Protest' in D.C.

  10. Courtesy of my email. I was at the mall yesterday and walked into the book store. I asked if they had Trump's new book on how to deport illegal aliens. The clerk said "Get the fuck out of here and don't come back!". And I replied "Yes, that's the one. Do you have it in paperback?".
  11. How are they doing? More than 300 'Extreme Risk Protective Orders' issued in New Jersey since landmark gun safety law went into effect two years ago - WRNJ Radio
  12. There's video of that house on the News 12 video loop this morning. Video of the twister that touched down in Mullica Hill too.
  13. Those of you with flooded basements (or worse) have my sincere sympathy. I lived with flooded basements most of my life until we moved to our current house in 1994. We're on a 60 foot shale hill, so it's all down hill from here. That plus the 4" gravity drain I had installed under the footings to vent water out the side of the hill. That drain is just weeping this morning. When we had the 18" downpour in 24 hours in the 00's it was gushing. Had an empty garbage can sitting out yesterday. Looks like about 5" in it this morning.
  14. Tell them you're not vaccinated, not getting vaccinated, and not wearing a mask coming to or while in NJ. That oughta do it. Invitation rescinded! At least you won't have to buy a gift.
  15. Or did they abandon you for Marxism and slavery? If you really believe you're looking at this objectively, then stay in TN and feel no guilt. We cannot control what our parents are or our children become. Influence... maybe. Control... no. If my mother had been beyond the pale, I would have abandoned her. I'm not a fan of self-destruction, and life is too short. Fortunately for me she wasn't. So it didn't come to that. Your mileage may vary.
  16. Kudos to you as a son. My mother lived with us for six years until the end. She could be a difficult woman in some respects. Politics wasn't one of them, but the effect was the same. When your scenario concludes you'll be glad you did it, and have no regrets.
  17. I don't have rabid leftist family members, but there are a couple definitely on that side of the fence. I simply don't talk to them unless there's a necessary reason. And necessary topics don't include politics. That same treatment would hold for parents, if they were alive, or children. Remember that during the Civil War (war of secession actually) many 'friends' and 'family members' killed each other when the conflict got real. It's quite possible that will happen again. I can appreciate your situation. There's a least one lifelong friend I dumped because of this.
  18. I actually didn't know they remade the Blob. I'll have to check that out. Thanks for the post.
  19. Hahaha! You got that right! The Million Dollar Movie theme was from Gone With The Wind. (Uh oh... racist!) I was home sick with the measles or something the week that was on, so I watched it twice a night M-F and three times on Saturday and Sunday. I can still hum the entire musical score. Especially those single low-octave piano notes. Used to drive one of my bench tech buddies wild with it two decades later.
  20. Well at last. A thread about entertainment so we can stop talking about War and Peace for at least five minutes. I must say I distinguish between genres of movies that are decades apart. Standards, techniques, tastes and writing change so much I'm not sure some comparisons are fair. The Thing, The Day The Earth Stood Still, And Godzilla are in my top five sci-fi/monster movies of all time. But for different reasons. The Thing produced (and really directed) by Howard Hawk is a classic. The dialogue, the actors, the direction and yes the story line were all superb. After all, it is a sci-fi movie. The remake was also really good, for different reasons. Completely different story line, much more stunning special effects, and more of a 'horror' feel to it. I liked them both, but wouldn't compare them to each other. The original Day the Earth Stood Still was a classic. Top notch actors, a simple but effective story line ("We do not pretend to have achieved perfection. But we have a system, and it works.") and great direction and writing. ("Maybe we can scare him more than he can scare us.") The remake with Keanu Reeves' Klaatu was to me a little stilted. And they just had to interject the racial component to feel contemporary. John Cleese as the professor was a little too cut and dried with his instruction. On the other hand, great special effects, a good story line and some plot twists. I liked it a lot. The original Godzilla is another classic. I mean a guy in a rubber suit stomping through a studio floor Tokyo? And Perry Mason is chronicling the entire thing? What's not to like? LOL (Must watch the original Japanese Gojira to appreciate why the movie was made in the first place.) I remember watching it 19 times in one week on Channel 9's Million Dollar Movie and I was scared to death every time. All the subsequent remakes were crap IMO, except the 2014 version with Bryan Cranston. That remake had a great and plausible follow-up story line, and the effects matched up with it nicely. Well that's my contribution to serenity for a change. Now I need to check my DVD stash. I think I'm due for a re-run of something. Maybe... Killers From Space? Hahaha!
  21. I don't think there's a pat good answer given the lack of inventory and the widely varying pace of permit approvals. In the 'old' days (meaning 2019 and before) I would apply for permits and order the handguns I wanted. My lists never included anything really exotic so 19 times out of 20 what I wanted was in stock and would come in promptly. My deal with my FFL was they had my business exclusively (unless they just could not locate a particular pistol), I would pay in full before their invoices were due, and they would hold them in the safe for me at no charge until my permits (and any multiple-handgun exemptions) were ready. Ironically back then the firearms came in promptly, while the permits didn't. Now, the permits (at least for me) are approved within about two weeks, but good luck ordering a handgun! Right now I'm waiting on their Glock order to arrive before my permit expirations.
