  1. Thanks for the insight. This was the most helpful yet. I think this is what PK90 was telling me, but now it makes more since to me. I was hoping for this to not be a handgun and that requires the forward grip and for this to not be a rifle due to the lack of a stock. If I understand you and PK9, NJ in a round and about (assault weapons banning) way prohibit any 'firearms' which federally are not handguns, rifles, or AOW. The start down this line of thinking was simple. I am interested in building a 300BLK and the optimum barrel length between maneuverability and ballistics seems to be around 10". So having a 14.5 + pinned muzzle brake to total 16" seemed like a waste of barrel length and a negative in maneuverability. Well, so it it. For as long as I'm stuck here I'll have to stick to rifles (16") for such things. So....who here knows what the best 14.5" 300BLK barrel is..........new thread. 2. PK90, So in NJ is a "long gun" not a way to go about this? As another option, could one buy a lower out of state? Even one other thought is, what if someone moved to NJ with one of these 'firearms'? Would that not be legal? You are correct in that the best answer is move to America. I am working on that as well. On that note, congrats on your move.
  3. Thanks for the link Jon. I searched but came up empty. So, did anyone ever produce an AG opinion on this? I read about police opinion, but in the end they can at worse (and it's bad) arrest you for something that is not illegal. They don't get to write or interpret the law. It sounds like the consensus is that in NJ it has to be a handgun or rifle. I don't know that I agree. If so, then how can a lower be transferred as an other?
  4. Thanks Paul. I have not checked the papers on the lowers I picked up from you as I have yet to get started on this proposed build. Does this mean that you did not transfer any lower as 'other'. I guess I took that for granted as that is what I expected. I have a sweet AX556 on order that I'll have transferred as an 'other' that I am interested in making into a sweet 300BLK. JT, the whole point is I think I may be able to build a good, maneuverable, effective home defense firearm in 300BLK. So what if it turns out to be completely ineffective at any of those things. I'm having fun with a hobby I enjoy regardless of how it turns out. BUT, first I must ensure that my hobby stays on the correct side of the law. I'm sure almost no one would post online asking for pointers on where to look for a law unless they were doing their best to stay legal. Anyone can commit felonies in Nj with firearms. Only those of us who really care to take the time to research and seek advice (though not legal in this case) are able to stay felon free here.
  5. I understand everything in NJ is regulated. I just think that since the BATFE made this ruling / legal interpretation / regulatation / letter from a boss in 2011, NJ has not had a chance to make up its own silly regulations controlling this "firearm" that is not a handgun, a rifle, a SBR, or AOW. 'So...I'm saying there's a chance'. But, then I'm here to find out if this is all just a 300BLK pipe dream....
  6. PK90, Thanks for the input. 1. Copy good to go 2. I'm not interested on building a "rifle" or a "shotgun". I'm interested in building a "firearm" without it being legally a handgun or a rifle. 3. I understand the "handgun" limits. That is why I'm thinking of a "firearm" 4. My understanding is that the BATFE....ect...ect... Now considers handgun to only include those firearms that are made to be "concealable" and defining that as under 26". Also, a SBR only applies if you first have a "rifle" then modify it (thus no stock). As for the COE or P2P, I understand those things and they would not hamper my objectives here. Heck, Paul, you transferred a few lowers to me back at your shop. I was thinking of building one of those virgins up. Bottom line is, I think there is a place now for a "Firearm" that is NOT a handgun or rifle. This would need to have never been a rifle (ie virgin lower) and have an over all length of more then 26". Then the barrel length would not matter (shorter than 16" being cool). It would not be a handgun and thus all the silly handgun rules are out. Like 50oz, barrel shrouds, and 'those thingies that go up'. I would only need to watch out for the normal "evil" features and mags. PK, I think I'm on to something, but as always, that's a long shot in this state. Updated with this as a baseline for a home build. http://www.franklinarmory.com/PRODUCTS_XO-26.html
  7. I've looked around and this has continued to allude me. I am interested in the following. 1. Virgin AR lower transferred as "other" (or maybe as a handgun?) + 2. A pinned/non-threaded/non-flash-hiding less then 16" barrel + 3. A pistol style buffer tube (no stock) And? 4. A FVG = greater then 26" OAL My understanding is that this would NOT be an NFA firearm. This Would NOT be a handgun. This would NOT be a rifle. This WOULD be a "Firearm." I also think this would be one hell of a cool way to build a good, 'short' barreled 300BLK home defensive "Firearm." Besides the normal, "I would not want to be he test case" answers, what do you think? Maybe I'm missing a law, but it seems legit (and badass). Thanks for taking the time to read my very first thread! Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  8. T Bill, Good article. I am still into the 300 BLK. It would be much better if I could just build an SBR or even AR pistol with it. I plan to do just that after I brake free from NJ, but I would sure like to get into the cartridge sooner and thus the interest in the 14.5". It also seems to make since to get a pistol gas length barrel just in case I move and then want to have the barrel cut down. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  9. I called Rainier to ask about the carbine gas system on their 14.5" 300BLK. The rep I spoke with basically told me that it should work fine, however subsonic loads may not have enough gas to cycle the action without a can on it. He then explained that if that is a concern I could alway just open the gas port more on the barrel. I asked what negative side effects that would introduce, like too much gads on hot supersonic loads. He basically said there would be no negatives. I explained that this info is suspect as I would then expect they would have cut the gas hole to the larger size when they made it. Something is not adding up here. Hen he explained that by saying that these barrels are older so that is why. I stopped trying to make since of his after that and thanked him for his time. I have had great experiences in the past with Rainier's products, but I have not tried their barrels. I really wanted to go with one of their 300 BLK and save the cost difference from the Noveske, but now I'm thinking I need to just find a pistol gassed 14.5". Any pointers other then Noveske? It seems that most people go 16", but since we in NJ must pinned the muzzle brake anyway I would like to go with the 14.5". Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
  10. T Bill, is your 16" barrel in pistol or carbine length? Also, does it cycle reliably with subsonic and supersonic loads (no can)?
  11. I'm wondering about barrels too. I would like to shoot subsonic and supersonic loads both without a can (this is NJGF). I'm considering either the Noveske 14.5" with pistol gas system or Rainier Arms Ultra Match 14.5" with carbine gas system. I'm confused with regard to the gas systems. I hear that less then a 16" barrel may require a pistol length, but I'm sure Rainier knows what they are doing and they are running the carbine length. Noveske states that they may not cycle subsonics without a can. This statement is on all of the Noveskes and they all seem to be pistol length. Thoughts on these two barrels or others I should consider over these? Thanks
  12. I'm looking to build my first 300 BLK also. From what I have found out there it seems there are more options coming to market, but they do seem to be around $1-$1.25/round. This is one I would want to reload for. If you have .223 brass then it seems fairly easy to make the 300 BLK brass. After watching some YouTube videos I have learned that there are a large number of bullets one can use. So reloading can make this less expensive.
  13. The South Jersey Shooting Club is a great local range with a good gun shop (Bangers). If you are looking for clays then there is a good sporting clays club very close to your new digs, but I don't recall the name of that club.
  14. http://www.nrainstructors.org/searchcourse.aspx This should help.
  15. I would add a torque wrench for the barrel nut, but not required.
  16. So we finally have a reason for 15 round magazines..... Forced moderation on the giggle switch and associated cost.
  17. This sounds like just the ticket. I'm interested in the next course. That is....if you are still in need of a 'lurker' for the next class. I've been looking for just such training in he area.
  18. I too would like to know. When I first looked for requirements on COEs I did not find any requirement for the lenght of time they much be kept. Is there any requirement to keep them for any specific timeframe?
  19. Correct me if I'm wrong, but If it was his own porch and he was not threatings anyone he would not even require an FID.
  20. I have had good luck with Bangers and I do recommend them. Nice staff and fair prices. They were low on stock like everyone else the past couple months, however they have had the shelves fairly well stocked for the past couple weeks. Last week they had 1911s, revolvers, MSRs, and even a couple Barrett 50s in stock. Botton line, Good shop and Good people.
