  1. I'd just like to take my 10/22 out someplace and shoot something besides paper. I figure limiting it to rimfire cartridges might open up some options, but it seems like all we have are private clubs (I don't get to shoot often enough to justify the dues) or skeet/clay for shotgunners (just haven't gotten there yet). I'd love to be able to go all hickok45 somplace and pop the hell outta some soda cans & steel plates, etc. Is there anyplace around here (closer to Union County the better) I can do that? I'm sick of shooting holes in paper at a whopping 25 yards. And before anybody mentions it, yes I'd LOVE to move out of NJ but it just ain't happening
  2. awesome, thanks guys. Any special swivels I need/should look at? I don't use my 10/22 too much but like to have slings on all my rifles so I was gonna go kinda low-end for sling & swivels (thinking two point) just so the thing could be shouldered if I really needed to.
  3. I've got the 10/22 carbine with synthetic stock and I want to put a sling on there. Is this something I can do myself or should I have a gunsmith do it because it requires some kind of crazy tools or expertise? I checked youtube and there's nothing I could find about how to install swivels on a synthetic stock.
  4. where do you guys find the listing of training in the area? I've been using the NRAInstructors.org site which is nice because it gives you NRA certified classes, but I'd qualify most of them as beginner level classes. I am a beginner, but appreciate your thoughts on GOOD training in the area since it's equally possible to just pick something off the internet and show up for it to be 1 instructor and 15 students in a tiny crowded range with little value add. Trying to build myself up a training regimen, even though I don't have CCW (and doubt I could get it) I feel like I should have more knowledge than I do just having guns in my house around my family and friends.
  5. I also took the NRA Basic Pistol Course (did mine with the Heritage guys out in Easton) and if you're DEFINITELY going to get a pistol then I'd say it's a worthwhile investment of your time and money before OR after your purchase. I'd say the three biggest benefits I got out of the course were: 1) Holding and shooting a variety of pistols including: DA revolver, SA revolver, Semi-auto SA (1911), Semi-auto DA/SA 2) Q&A on carry and transport laws for firearms AND ammo...NJ has some really creepy laws and while nothing short of a lawyer can give you the full interpretation it helps to have a little more broad knowledge 3) better understanding of ammo types, calibers, etc I'd like to say #4 was meeting some cool people but I was REALLY hungover the day of the class and in no mood to socialize...my fault, freakin weddings My only revolver experience was in that class and I found out I can't shoot em for my life...so I'll stick with semi auto's. Good luck & have fun!
  6. So I put 200 rounds down range yesterday and then cleaned up my PPQ again and the "streaks" are gone. I actually emailed the folks at Kaluban Cloak (even though it's not a KC holster) and they said Kydex sometimes rubs off but a simple silicon cloth rub-down will remove the streaks. Here she is all polished up with her new accessory http://i1258.photobucket.com/albums/ii536/keithco88/20120212_203042.jpg
  7. +1 for PPQ. I researched 9mm's for 2 months and had narrowed it down to a CZ 75 SP-01, Glock 19 and Walther PPQ. As soon as I held the PPQ next to the Glock it was all over. Find a local guy that has both in stock and hold them next to each other. If you want a non-plastic gun CZ 75 of some version is the way I'd go Edit: very comprehensive review of the PPQ after shooting it quite a bit by the aforementioned TheWombat http://www.waltherforums.com/forum/ppq/20084-ppq-10-weeks-3000-rounds.html And yes, we're all pretty sure he gets commission every time PPQ is mentioned on the forums
  8. so is this plain sight? http://i1258.photobucket.com/albums/ii536/keithco88/20120210_150803.jpg This is a case on top of a book shelf up at ceiling level. The case levers have locks on them and there's a padlock on the end Or is plain sight like a 1911 sitting unloaded on my workbench after I finished cleaning it and the doorbell rang when I was home alone?
  9. 1. Application type Pistol Permit 2. Police Department where you applied. Scotch Plains 3. Name of the person you dealt with at the PD. Unknown Clerk at Records 4. Time taken to issue FID and/or permit. 36 days 5. Documents required by the PD (aside from the standard application and the mental health release form). Needed to sign a "receipt form" where they just document that I actually picked up my permit 6. Notes - anything pertaining to the application process (unforeseen difficulties, chief of police calling your home, you hiring an attorney, etc.). Minor annoying thing is that they don't tell me exactly what they're waiting for after I know they received my references back. Not sure if it's mental health check or whatever from the state. They also don't just call you to tell you it's ready, or mail it to you...they mail you a letter saying to come get it and they have you sign that receipt form. Not the worst process in the world, but adds a few days.
  10. That's the piece that got me. I can see between the belt and the holster, but i don't see how it's ever possible to NOT see between the belt and the holster...i'm a pretty skinny guy, i'd need to tape the gun onto me to not see any daylight
  11. Is this holster legal for IDPA? http://i1258.photobucket.com/albums/ii536/keithco88/20120209_160555.jpg I read the rules on IDPA.com and it mentions that closed loops are required. Note towards the left side of the picture, the clip is curled up to prevent the holster from coming off (you really need to work at it a bit to get the clip off) but it is not a closed loop. Anybody know if I can use this for IDPA or do I need to invest in another holster? I have a mag pouch with the same curled but open-loop clip so I'd need to get new stuff there too.
  12. Nope, I'm just hitting the range in Easton this weekend to get a feel for the gun. I have very little experience with 9mms in general, a lot of quality time on 1911's. Want to get some range time in before embarassing myself in public...which I'm sure will happen anyway. I'll probably see you at the March match...will message you or post to the events board as it gets closer. Have fun!
  13. should I look at nylon or leather? I avoided leather because if it gets wet you're hosed, and personally I just don't like the look (no offense to leather fans out there...i really just can't pull it off) I avoided nylon because everything seemed to need the strap over the top to secure it and I really don't want that in any scenario where I'd be carrying. Anything I'm missing? my gut tells me tony357 is totally right and these will just be "love scars" on my gun from a whole lot of practice and shooting from kydex
  14. So I just got my shiny new PPQ (pics to come) and I've been practicing drawing and reholstering with my kydex holster from pjholster.com and I'm noticing a little streak of wear along the right side of the slide between the front serrations and the ejection port. I'm thinking this is one of the main pressure/hold points for the holster on the gun, but I'm wondering if it's normal to notice this after only ~25 draws. I cleaned & lubed & wiped my gun down right when I got it and I've just been practicing and noticed the streak, have not shot it myself yet so it's not any leftover residue from firing. Is this normal? Is there anything I should be doing to treat/break in my holster or is this just what happens when you actually use your gun instead of just put it in a safe and bring it to the range? I'll be using this for IDPA so if it's gonna get scratched up anyway I'll live...I still have my Kimber (even though I REALLY love shooting it) as my showpiece :-) I'll try to get a picture highlighting the streak and post an update but right now the lighting and the camera from my phone ain't cuttin it.
  15. yeah that's my understanding from the site plus reading some reviews around the interweb...if i find a good one i'll repost
  16. Great thread and awesome links Am I the only one who really doesn't like the idea of a dial or electronic keypad lock? The dial I'm pretty sure I'd mess up in a pressure situation and electronic keypad lock...well I don't like having more things on batteries. I've gotten one of these for my bedside pistol and feel completely secure that I can access it quickly: http://www.vlineind.com/html/top_draw.html I'm thinking about doing one of these two for hidden storage of a few more guns w/ammo. It won't store a whole arsenal, but if you want to hide something in a wall but still have reasonable access to it I think it's a decent option...definitely not NEARLY as cool as some of the other options we've seen on the thread, nor as spacious...but relatively inexpensive I'd think. http://www.vlineind.com/html/closet_vault.html http://www.vlineind.com/html/long_gun_case.html I'm pretty sure you can get these on amazon and get some free or cheap shipping. I haven't seen a good solution for anything more than 3-4 guns that doesn't require batteries or a dial besides the other stuff on this thread, but that seemed more on the concealment angle than actual security in some cases.
  17. I'm just thinking about getting into USPSA/IDPA and researching mag pouches. From everything I've heard (lots from ppl here so thanks for the help!) is that I'll probably need to run 4-6 mags in these competitions. I've also heard/read that there's some restrictions as to where on your belt the mags can be located. Given that I have ZERO experience reloading from a holster I'm pretty much open to anything, with the understanding that training/practice can make pretty much anything work. Anyway, I've found two setups that seem to give a staggered layout of four mags in the belt real-estate that a regular double mag pouch might take 1) Kaluban Cloak Quad mag pouch: there's actually not a picture of a quad pistol, but they have this stacked combo thing which I figure is approximate (http://www.calsentllc.com/VBSS_op_660x489.jpg) - $120 2) Comp-Tac belt feed: http://www.comp-tac.com/product_info.php?products_id=33&osCsid=g2d2divbcaro430seskutndbh2 - $128 Has anybody seen/used these?
  18. Thanks Pizza Bob...I'll try to get a 3rd opinion from my local PD and notify people. FYI the class where I heard the quote from my post above was at Heritage Guild in Easton. I really liked the class and found it very informative, and I'm pretty sure Matt is an NRA certified instructor, but the laws seem to be intentionally vague so I'm betting unless ppl have actual experience there's some room for interpretation and he may have been giving us the maximal CYA perspective. kenw - interesting point at the end there. So if I buy at a gun show in PA and do whatever legal transfer is req'd, but the guy at the show actually didn't "OWN" it to transfer it then I'm breaking the law? Doesn't that amount to handgun registration? Am I the only one who was under the impression that the gov't isn't supposed to have a person to firearm registry? Am I totally missing the boat?
  19. My understanding of what was relayed to me recently at an NRA training course (with the instructor repeatedly saying "I am not a lawyer and will not defend you in court") is that having a handgun in NJ is illegal UNLESS you have an FID card. However with that FID card you're fine with any handgun that meets the requirements of the state (capacity, etc) as ok. The permit is only to PURCHASE the handgun. As by-the-book there is no firearm registry in the state of NJ they have no way of completely determining that the handgun in your possession is yours or your wife's or your friend's so it shouldn't be an issue. He did mention cases of an officer searching a vehicle asking for the consumer copy of the purchase permit and running them in if they didn't match, however mentioned that it's not grounds for conviction since if it were it would amount to handgun registration which is illegal in NJ. Did I completely misunderstand my instructor's interpretation of the law? In any case, don't draw the attention of any cops and you SHOULD be fine; but if you want to be safe yeah prob best to get everything in your name so as not to piss off the cops and put it in the hands of slimeball lawyers.
  20. ha, thanks PeteF guys, ignore this and go post on the other thread so everything is consolidated!
  21. ok guys, I started a different thread I'm trying to use to see if we can get some grassroots analysis documented on the deltas we see in the process across the state. Please check it out and keep it factual if you're interested http://njgunforums.com/forum/index.php?/topic/31876-grassroots-analysis-of-fidpistol-permit-process/
  22. Ok, so most of us aren't huge fans of the NJ FID and pistol permit process, but this isn't a thread about getting rid of it. What I'm suggesting is we take advantage of our diverse knowledge and experience and take down THE FACTS about what each of our local PD's put us through to get our FID and/or Pistol Permit. Please DO NOT turn this into a debate about the constitutionality of the processes we're forced to go through or a gripe session about a terrible experience. If we keep this factual maybe we can get somewhere. As a guideline, I recommend everyone read this and we'll only document anything that differs (either less or more) from what's documented here: http://www.randolphnj.org/police/firearms_purchases/ I think what we want to highlight are additional costs, forms, or excessive waits past the supposed 30 day limit. It may also be good to highlight if people have exceptionally positive experiences, like getting everything in less than a week. We want to keep this very factual so lets try this as a format to start with: a) Town Name or Police Station Name b) FID application and/or Pistol Permit application? (indicate number if multiple permits) c) Name(s) of any folks you've worked with & contact information (800 number or station number is fine) d) Date application initiated e) Date application resolved f) Itemized cost of application (i.e. $65 for finger printing + $5 for FID + $2 for pistol permit = $72 total) g) Additional forms or requirements (i.e. need to sign form in front of a notary, need 5 total references, etc) h) Free form comments (i.e. application was resolved in 30 days but they didn't notify me it was complete until I stopped in 40 days later, called State Police daily until they sent forms to my local PD, etc) All I'm suggesting we do is get the facts and some typical cases down on paper and if we see some real egregious trends we can consider bringing it to the NRA or NJ2AS so they have some basis for a discussion with the appropriate parties. Here's the "letter of the law" copied from another thread:2C:58-3f f.Granting of permit or identification card; fee; term; renewal; revocation. The application for the permit to purchase a handgun together with a fee of $2, or the application for the firearms purchaser identification card together with a fee of $5, shall be delivered or forwarded to the licensing authority who shall investigate the same and, unless good cause for the denial thereof appears, shall grant the permit or the identification card, or both, if application has been made therefor, within 30 days from the date of receipt of the application for residents of this State and within 45 days for nonresident applicants. A permit to purchase a handgun shall be valid for a period of 90 days from the date of issuance and may be renewed by the issuing authority for good cause for an additional 90 days. A firearms purchaser identification card shall be valid until such time as the holder becomes subject to any of the disabilities set forth in subsection c. of this section, whereupon the card shall be void and shall be returned within five days by the holder to the superintendent, who shall then advise the licensing authority. Failure of the holder to return the firearms purchaser identification card to the superintendent within the said five days shall be an offense under subsection a. of N.J.S.2C:39-10. Any firearms purchaser identification card may be revoked by the Superior Court of the county wherein the card was issued, after hearing upon notice, upon a finding that the holder thereof no longer qualifies for the issuance of such permit. The county prosecutor of any county, the chief police officer of any municipality or any citizen may apply to such court at any time for the revocation of such card. There shall be no conditions or requirements added to the form or content of the application, or required by the licensing authority for the issuance of a permit or identification card, other than those that are specifically set forth in this chapter.
  23. So I just read the actual law quote above. My PD charges $60 for fingerprinting first-time FID & Permit requests and a $18 for all subsequent requests under the auspices of some sort of fingerprinting/background checking. Am I getting totally raped here? As a state resident adhering to a state process, can I just go to like Randolph or some other town where they actually adhere to the laws and get the permits out as they're supposed to? I went in again today to ask for an update on my permit, 31 days after I submitted it. The two women, very bothered that I had interrupted their conversation, recognized my name like they had just looked at the paperwork and told me it's "on the last leg of the process". I said "when will it be ready". They told me "you can pick it up when you receive the letter in the mail". So can I call the State Police to report a violation of the state law and ask them to move things along? From looking at some other threads that tactic seems to work ok I just want to be able to pick up my PPQ before next weekend b/c that's the only time in Feb I'll be able to shoot...this is kinda rediculous EDIT: my town's process seems identical to the link above for Randolph's process...they just seem to dick me around for another 2 weeks after everything is done
  24. if they do the same thing to drivers who get moving violations on a regular basis and/or are over 65 and have hearing or vision impairments then sure....which machine is kills more?!
