  1. PPQ, I have a first Gen with the paddle release(which I love). I've had it since January, have 510rds though it and it has been flawless. It is my first hand gun, lead me to an SR1911 and a 22/45. In my hands its the most comfortable ergonomically, significantly less recoil than the .45 1911 and easier to work the controls (I can't get comfortable with the stretch to hit the mag release on the 1911 and I have normal size hands). 22/45 is fun, but I prefer a bit more oomph from the 9mm. I've shot .40 Glocks and Sigs, none of them felt as comfortable to hold or pointed as easily for me. I might take some heat for this, but aside from my out of the box tear down and cleaning I haven't cleaned a thing in those 510 consecutive rounds and its still smooth as buttah!!!!
  2. I think we may need add another poll for preferred cooking method. There are certainly some brands(Sabret DWD) that are better cooked one way. But what cooking style wins?
  3. Wow. That's an interesting and pretty enticing scope. Too bad I don't have anything to mount it on, or even a place to take advantage of that much power
  4. So I started a new job and don't have a weekday to myself anymore. So I'd only be able to shoot weekends and maybe evenings, after 6pm during the week. I haven't joined yet, but with upcoming membership days I've been considering it. Questions is, how packed does it get on weekends? Thanks

    Accuracy?

What type of barrel length would we be talking. I was thinking 18" as opposed to 16 or 14.5+ comp should be a better fit, but is that true?

    Accuracy?

So what features make for an accurate AR? Not 500+yd precision, but something capable of sub-moa(maybe 1/2MOA?) groups at 100yds. Are there certain things that contribute to better accuracy than others, heavy vs. pencil barrel? Aside from the trigger does anything in the lower affect accuracy? Total noob stuff I know, but any help would be great. Joe

    Local Parts

Total newb question, from what I understand a longer barrel is quieter than a shorter barrel. Is there a noticeable difference between an 18" barrel and a 14.5(plus comp).

Thanks T Bill. How do you like teh PSA set ups, I can't find too many reviews of complete or nearly complete PSA rifles out there

    Local Parts

I'm open to picking all the parts ala carte down to the last pin. Just don't really know exactly what I need. I'd love to be able to build a 200yd tack driver for $1000 or less including the stripped lower.

    Local Parts

OK, I just checked out PSA. They have two complete kits available now. One is 16" and one is 18". I'm looking for something that would make a decently accurate 100-200yd(maybe 300?) rifle. So this kit stands out to me http://palmettostatearmory.com/index.php/ar-15-05/ar-15-parts-sale/psa-18-hammer-forged-sqr-sportsman-rifle-kit.html Any thoughts or opinions would be great. Otherwise all I need to do is add an optic and stripped lower and I believe I'm good to go.
  11. Any recomendations for shops to purchase parts(all of them actually) in North Jersey. Thinking about building up my own AR from scratch but the shops I've poked around in locally are getting a bit of a premium compared to most of the online prices I've seen. I want to build it because I love to tinker and want to know how it works. I'm not looking to build anything crazy and want to keep the price down. Thanks
  12. Ok, I completely understand the idea of racking the slide with my weak hand to chamber a round, and with a bit more research that seems to be the way to go. But what is "slingshot"? I'm lost on that one.
  13. So, got to the range for the first time and put a few(16, hey I couldn't find ammo anywhere) rounds down range. First rounds through the SR1911 so I shot 4rd groups through both mags to make sure they functioned properly. Problem, I can't work the slide release with my strong hand. I need to twist around and operate it with my weak hand, which seems very strange coming from a poly pistol that I can "flick" off with my strong thumb no problem. So I'm wondering, do these extended slide releases come back appreciably farther to make this easier? Am I the only one who has this problem, my hands aren't all that small. This caught my eye because it may match the existing, just with an extension: http://www.brownells.com/handgun-parts/frame-parts/slide-catch-parts/slide-catches/1911-auto-extended-slide-release-prod16468.aspx Thanks, Joe
  14. What is the real difference between a Mk3 and a 22/45. I understand the 22/45 has the same grip angle as a 1911, along with the same controls for slide and mag release. Does the Mk3 have the same controls but with a different grip angle? Any benefits or disadvantages to either model? Thanks so much for your help guys(and gals).
  15. I stopped by this morning about 10:30 for the first time. Very nice facility, clean, extremely well thought out and organized. I interacted with 5 staff members and each one was courteous and professional. The paper work........... its maybe a full page of name and address type stuff and then about 10 lines to initial, its really not much at all. Took 5 min, literally. I'm not sure what the issue some have is, we're not talking about taking out library books, we're talking about some potentially dangerous "toys" if used incorrectly, so it only makes sense. Ventilation seemed a bit better than some I've experienced, there was no odor of burnt powder, even in my own port after firing off 200rds. However there was a smell coming from the cafe, and DAMN did it smell good. I would have stayed for lunch but I was in a hurry, luckily they have Mt. Dew, makes for a great breakfast and lunch all by itself. Overall I was pretty impressed, no wait, bright and clean, friendly and informative. Given the convenient location I don't think you can ask for more for the price(I'm hourly). Joe
  16. So I've decided to make my 3rd pistol a .22 so range trips can be a bit longer and less expensive. But I'm torn, I currently have a PPQ 9mm which I love, and a brand new SR1911 that I fired 16rds through this morning(seems cool, just didn't have access to any more ammo on the way to the range today). Not sure if I should go with a "tactical" .22 for lack of a better term, like a P22Q to mimic the controls and feel of the PPQ while giving up a bit of accuracy. Or if I should go with something more like a MK3 or 22/45, a bit more target oriented. All I do is go to the range and punch paper. Thinking about joining Cherry Ridge, but haven't gotten that far yet. Any thoughts as to the pros and cons of each type of set up would be great. Joe
  17. After a long wait its finally here, just have to find some time and ammo to get to the range now:)
  18. Oh BTW, mine has run flawlessly on Federal 36gr CPRN
  19. I picked one up back in January. 597 20" HB from Dicks(yeah yeah I know.....), I've got about 700 rounds through it and it has been flawless. I guess at times I want something out of the norm, so I DIDN'T want a 10/22. I read all the 597 reviews, and was maybe a bit apprehensive, but everyone said an extractor change and trigger change were necessary, after that you'd be good to go. So I ordered the Volquartsen extractor and hammer, as soon as I got the rifle. I haven't put the extractor in yet. To date I have not a single FTE. The only issue I've had at all was one failure to fire, Winchester Super X RN, tried the round twice, the rim crimped each time, let the guy next to me try it in his bolt CZ and he had no luck either. So I'm pretty sure it was just a bad primer. In terms of the trigger, the stock felt fine, was pretty smooth, but a bit heavy. Switching the to the target hammer reduced the [pull noticeably, but I don't think it got any smoother(not that it had to). I just shoot paper off the bench from 50-100yds so it was nice to lighten the pull a bit. So I say DO IT. Its a great gun, easy to work on if you take your time, super reliable if you have an '12+ model. The Truth About Guns posted a review last month you should check out, they raved about it. Joe

    What next?

I haven't thought about a revolver yet. Not sure I'd really be interested. But at the same time I had no interest in 1911's a few months ago and that changed. I've got my Poly pistol and its a heck of a lot sexier than a Glock:) I've got maybe 700-800rds of .22 ready to go(I've got a 597 that I love). I really want something inexpensive to shoot so I can get to the range for an hours or so and not burn through $100 worth of ammo every time. I guess thats going to be a determining factor, but I'm all for entertaining any fun ideas at this point

    What next?

So I've got a 9mm PPQ and waiting for NICS to clear to pick up my SR1911. I have one permit left, and probably need to use it a month from now so it doesn't expire before I can make a purchase and perform the NICS check. So my questions is what else should I add to the collection? I've considered a .22 pistol, but I don't know if I should go with something target oriented like a MK3 or Buckmark(22/45?). And then I've considered a pocket pistol, just because a tiny .380 would be cool. But I guess there really is no need for it since I'll never carry. I'd love to hear anyones thoughts and even off the wall suggestions for something different. Joe
  22. Mine was transferred in on Tuesday, submit the NICS yesterday, we'll see how long it takes.
  23. I had my heart set on the SR1911. Maybe just because I love he look. I don't know. But I found one. And submit the NICS on Tuesday. Maybe ill have it in hand by 2014
