    Yeah, my old Victorian was shaking like a leaf... for about 15 seconds (though it felt like a lifetime). Far worse than any windstorms I've been through in this house. Unnerving.

    I know they have some ridiculously far .22lr long-range events in other parts of the country... but I wasn't even aware of anything over 100 yards in Joisey. I'll be interested to see who chimes in with info, because I've been thinking that might be a fun supplement to the high-power stuff.

    Though - and I hate to sound "high-maintenance" here - but I can't wait until they finally get with the times and move fully over to electronic targets... now that I've participated in matches both with and without them, I personally think those e-target systems are DA BOMB!!!

    Even for casual shooting they're nice, but if you're in a match... e-targets certainly makes the whole day far more pleasant. Who wants to be pulling targets like a lowly beast of burden?... not this woman!

    As for her case, yes, I agree... the press scrutiny is appalling. Absolute animals.

    First, let me state that I'm NOT one of those people that got up in the wee hours of the morning to watch Charles & Di get married, and frankly?... I didn't do that for William and Kate, or for Harry and Meghan. As an American, what can I say?... I just have no great love for (or obsession with) monarchies in general. It strikes me as a ridiculous and antiquated system. But hey, it's their tradition, not ours... each to their own.

    All that said, I won't lie... I was very sad to hear this latest news.:( The princess - just as a person - comes across as beautiful, grounded, poised, and classy. She has also been delightfully free of major scandals. In fact, I have often gotten a kick out of how "Kate the Commoner" has behaved (IMO) with more elegance and grace than some of the "Royals" in the family she married into. I also can't help but strip the issue of royalty away for a moment... and look at it through the simple lens of humanity... enough to realize what a tough break it is for ANY family to have TWO members battling cancer at the same time. Ugh. Nightmare! 

    Damn, I hate the scourge of cancer! It takes too many people - including in my own circle. I give best wishes to ANYONE facing a cancer diagnosis, but I do think her situation is one of those particularly poignant ones for multiple reasons... because she (again, agree with the concept of royalty or not) is a beloved role model to so many around the world... because the press is going to continue to hound the living daylights out of her... because she's the mom to 3 young children... and because her husband, who lost his own mother when she was far too young, shouldn't have to experience a similar fate with his own wife.  I really hope her treatment is successful and she is soon deemed cancer-free! :good:

    Yet another case in point when the loosening of carry restrictions made anti-gunners heads exlode: "OMG... aaaaghhh... there'll be blood in the streets if this is passed!" - and reality (oh, that pesky reality) turned out to be entirely different.

    The Black River WMA Archery and Shotgun Ranges at 275 North Road, Chester, Morris County, will be CLOSED for shooting station upgrades beginning Wednesday, March 13, 2024, and will reopen on Saturday, March 16, 2024.

    Some of you military history buffs may enjoy this. Personally?... I'm wondering... is it evidence of great, timeless design? Or are the Ukrainians just in far worse shape in this war than the media has advertised? You be the judge!

    Apparently, the Ukrainians are regularly employing the Maxim M1910 on the battlefield, a 140-year-old machine gun that was first used in World War I. (Well, now that I'm thinking about it...  I own a 1911... so maybe I shouldn't question this?) ;)

    Oh, dear! I log into NJ Gun Forums, and what do I see?  @gloom has (quite innocently, I'm sure) named and shamed me! :blush: I should know better than to state my goals on the Internet. I'm waaaay behind my previously stated schedule. :facepalm:

    In my defense, my carry plans were totally obliterated by other gun stuff! ;) Honestly? For me, it all comes down to moolah. I put myself on a strict budget when it comes to gun purchases, and then I prioritize them. This winter I was instead buying dies, an electronic scale, and various other reloading components to support my new rifle obsession. (Damn, even when you get good deals...everything is soooo costly!) So, I was simply in no position to be buying another gun. 

    That said, I can't say I've done "nothing" re: carry. I've tried out (both borrowed and rented) several gun models. I also spent many days in my house wearing my (full-size) 1911 in borrowed holsters (thanks, @High Exposure for those loaners) - simply to get a sense of what wearing a holster felt like (because I'd never worn one before). After all of that, I have definitely come to "general conclusions". I'll end up with a .380 for sure. And once I make the final pick, I'll undoubtedly end up with several methods of carry - an IWB holster, a pocket holster, a cross-carry concealed carry purse, and probably a concealed carry purse that goes around the waist, too. (So that's a big expense in and of itself - just all those holsters!) I realize that also means a TON of extra practice (even if it's dry fire at home) to be competent with all methods, but I've decided it's just a necessity due to my wardrobe: "it is what it is". 

    As far as which gun - the jury is still out but I'm getting closer. I ruled out the Walther PDP-F and micro 1911s. I shoot the Sig P365 P238 well & I do appreciate the nice, quality feel of it (my hesitancy is the price coupled with the low # of rounds). I haven't yet tried the EZ in .380 (I liked the EZ in 9, but the slide was still a bit too tight) or the Ruger LCP Max (of interest to me mainly because of its 10-round capacity) - they just didn't happen to have those last 2 models available where/when I rented - but I will try both before a decision is made.

    My winter goals have clearly morphed into spring/summer goals. Sorry to disappoint with my slow-poke pace... please forgive me, gloom!  :(

    New Holland is about 2 hours from Tinton Falls (or Colts Neck or any of those towns in the middle of Monmouth County). Cumberland Rifleman is slightly under 2 hours. Those are probably your 2 best bets. It's not like there's a TON of longer-distance ranges around us.

    Personally, I don't think you need to get hung up on "joining" either of those ranges though. Not right away anyway. I just got into rifle shooting last season... my (admittedly newb, take it with a grain of salt) advice, is to practice at your local range at whatever distances are available to you... and though it may feel counter-intuitive, even if you don't feel "ready", as long as you're hitting the target consistently, just sign up for some matches at one or both of those 600-yd ranges.

    Both of them have a decent schedule of NRA-sanctioned matches to accommodate various rifle sports, and you can sign up for matches even if you're not a range member. At first, I thought it would be soooo intimidating and terribly stressful to essentially get your practice in DURING a match, but people are super-friendly. Just make sure you set your scope in advance to that distance so you can get dialed in fast. (NRA-sanctioned matches, I've noticed, move pretty efficiently - people will not wait while you futz around with the equipment).

    If you really get obsessed, you could literally be shooting once or twice a month between both of those ranges'' match schedules, for 3 seasons of the year. Frankly, you could get LOADS of practice in that way without even joining a range.

    Cumberland Rifleman in Millville, NJ is the one with 600 yards.
