Is it legal to buy ammo online and ship to home or business?

Trying to figure out if I can buy 9mm ammo online and ship it to my house or work, or if I need to ship it to a FFL. If I need to ship to FFL, do they charge a fee like they do if you have a firearm transferred there? Sorry, most of the stuff I find online is from years ago.

Yes, legal to buy online and ship to your home/work.  Be aware that if your work isn't "firearm friendly" that some shippers just slap an adhesive label on a case of ammunition and ship it, so it's very obvious that it's ammunition when it arrives.

There is a law in NJ that it's illegal for you as a buyer to received "handgun" ammunition without having a valid FID, but there's no law requiring an out-of-state retailer to check for your FID before shipping.  Many will ask for your FID anyway.

All of the online sources that I have dealt with have asked for a copy of my FID and DL before they will ship to NJ.  They ask that these be updated once a year.

If you think about it, it's in their best interest to follow the laws of the states where they ship.  If, for example, they shipped handgun ammo to just any NJ resident, NJ is MORE likely to simply ban the shipping of ammo to residents.  More states follow suit for the same reason and the online dealers are out of business.
