    HK MR556

These are the civilian versions of the HK416 - the big difference between a "regular" AR is that it's gas piston operated instead of direct impingement system typically found in ARs... altho the SIGs may also be gas piston, so maybe not that different. The rear sight is typical HK style sight (think MP5 peep sight). I'm sure there's a few other differences. Knowing HK, they'll probably be ridiculously expensive ETA: more info here http://hk-usa.com/civ_rifles.asp there's also gonna be a 7.62 NATO version (.308) - MR762
  2. Like others have said, you can pin pretty much any collapsible stock you want. I currently have a pinned Magpul MOE stock on my AR and it's nice. I also have Sully stock sitting around for a future build. Another option is a Cav Arms lower receiver which has the stock built into it: http://www.cavalryarms.com/MKII.html I've never had one or seen one in person, but, based on the specs, it might be good for a lightweight KISS build. Of course there's always the good old A1 and A2 stock (I'd pick A1 over A2 cuz it's a smidge shorter) Never been a fan of the ace stocks, simply from an aesthetic point of view.
  3. BTW - if any of you are into survival/SHTF fiction, I HIGHLY recommend Lights Out by HalfFast. It is arguably the BEST book of it's kind, with lots of good tips mixed into a really good work of fiction.. and it's FREE! http://www.giltweasel.com/stuff/LightsOut-Current.pdf
  4. I've been slacking a bit with getting supplies for the house, but I've decided the "bug in" is the way we'll go if something crazy happens. Short of something nuclear in NYC, I think trying to leave will make things worse for us. Plus, I got no where to go to the west of here... almost everyone I know is to the east in the city, or down south in Jersey. So, there's really no point in trying to leave unless the plan is to go camping in the pine barrens or something :? On the plus side, I JUST picked up an '01 Cherokee (XJ), so while going off road doesn't really make sense for our situation, I can tear up the local golf courses if I need to make a quick escape My biggest concern has always been getting out of the city and back home. The wife and I both work in the city. Even tho I'm new to Jersey, I saw how difficult it was for my co-workers to get out of the city and into Jersey after 9/11, and, more recently, during the blackout a few years ago. If it's some sort of flu/outbreak/pandemic/zombies, it's no so bad cuz I'll hopefully see the signs early and just stay at home. If it's something that happens suddenly, then things get infinitely more complicated. Luckily, my parents still live in the city, and my girl knows to head there at the first sign of something bad... but we eventually gotta find a way to get back home to jersey. Still haven't found a perfect solution. If it's just a day or two of getting stuck in the city cuz of a blackout - no biggie. If it's something else, then I dunno. We could always trying swimming across the hudson
  5. Does Jim do gunsmithing? Never occurred to me to ask all the times I was there
  6. 30rnd bodies are nice cuz the full size makes it easier to get a hold of the mag for reloads and what not. But, the extra scrutiny you get with them in NJ, isn't worth it IMHO. I went with PK90's new 15rnd PMAGs in a 20rnd body. They were delivered yesterday and they are awesome!
  7. Gotcha. Guess I'll just wait and see what I have to work with when the safe gets here
  8. HAHAHAH classic! I almost choked on my food reading that
  9. Interesting - I have a safe being delivered next week... it's a pretty basic model.. hopefully it has a hole for this. Altho, wouldn't a hole make a "fireproof" safe, not so "fireproof" anymore?
  10. rscalzo, sorry if this is a dumb question, but, how do you get power to the heater you mentioned if it's in the safe?
  11. HAHA I pulled something similar to get the AR - "Honey - the zombies! We have to be ready!" unfortunately the AR cost about 3 times as much as I'm looking to spend on a shotty, so not sure I can try it a second time haha In all seriousness, she's actually pretty understanding.. I just gotta ease into telling her.. after I cook her a nice dinner of course LOL
  12. Yeah, not interested in a pistol grip Mossy - I'm trying to force myself to shoot long guns left handed since i'm left eye dominant. I wanted an 870 originally, but the safety on the 870 doesn't really lend itself to left hand manipulations. So, 590 seems to be the way to go with its ambidextrous safety position. Shortly after writing my post above, i found a brief "how to" on shotgunworld for installing a heat shield on a 590. Guess it's just a matter of finding a configuration I like and then finding a heatshield and doing it myself. The wife is gonna kill me
  13. Chad - couple questions: Is your 590 a 20" or 18.5" barrel? Also, did the heat shield come with it, or did you add that yourself? I'm trying to find a 18.5" 590 with a heat shield and not having much luck
  14. Ah yes - the 1919.. i've seen pictures of one (maybe yours?) over on arf it's bad enough we have to deal with all these backwards ass rules to be legal in this state, but to have to deal with something like that because of someone else's ignorance really blows. Glad you made it thru that unscathed.
  15. Old thread - but, if you don't mind me asking, why did they call the cops on you?
  16. Thanks for all the replies. The reason I asked is that since it takes so damned long to get the FID I didn't want to risk losing it since I generally carry it with me all the time on the off chance I need to buy something unexpectedly. I really should just plan my spending better and leave it at home the when I don't need it. Anyway, thanks again for the info.
  17. Actually, you're right. I just check and google maps has me about an hour away. For some reason I thought it was further away. It's only like 30-35 miles from me, so not sure why it would take an hour, but I may just have to check it out now That's kind of my problem I think - there are 3-4 places that are about an hour to an hour and half away, and they all offer something a little different. Decisions decisions
  18. Like I said, I was bored at work But I agree with you (and almost everyone else in this thread) - it just wasn't a smart thing to do, especially with students that are CLEARLY inexperienced. This video has also shown up on a bunch of other firearms forums I visit (including GOTX, Tactical Response's forum) and the comments have been quite interesting LOL
  19. Just to add a little fuel to the fire (yeah, I'm bored at work), anyone that has looked into Tactical Response for training probably knows that what they focus on is "fighting with a gun", as opposed to learning to use a gun. So, what does this mean? Well, in a nutshell, "gunfights" don't happen in a square range where you have 2 walls on either side of you and where you can only move your firearm 15 degrees in either direction. I'm not sharing my opinion here, just stating the type of training TR offers isn't NRA style training. Furthermore, if you really think about it, what firearms rules are being broken here? Their muzzles aren't pointed at the cameraman... just near him... This clearly wasn't a SMART thing to do on the instructor/cameraman's part - but i've seen people at the "square range" do far worse when they weren't paying attention. Anyway, I will put on my fire-retardant pajamas now - flame away
  20. If I'm not mistaken, that's Jay Gibson from Tactical Response. They actually come to Jersey about once a year to teach pistol or carbine classes. They must really trust their students
  21. HAH actually I have - but point taken
  22. HAHA I was thinking the same thing when I read that - aside from BulletHole which is luckily only 15 minutes away (but is unfortunately almost always packed), everything is atleast an hour away from me (assuming I can go 75 the whole way and don't hit traffic )
  23. Does anyone know if a photocopied FID is valid for purchases?
  24. This is a pretty decent price for PMC - a couple months ago i was able to get my hands on 1000 rounds of PMC for $400 shipped to my door. This comes out to a bit less and you dont have to deal with shipping! Not pre-election prices, but given the current market, it's pretty good
