  1. I was going to vote No! Something needs to be done about the availability of guns. Because it can be so difficult to get them (especially handguns!) here in NJ, but then I figured that's just NJ and it is probably easier in free America ;-) So it is up to 64.37% now.
  2. Wow, how is that for literally bolstering the Broken windows theory!
  3. Yeah that makes sense. Last time I got a P2P (about one year ago) it took about 3.5 months!
  4. So if your primary residence is FL and your DL is from FL, but you have a residence in NJ, can you bring any HG you acquire in FL to your NJ residence? And if so, why even bother with getting NJ P2P?
  5. I totally agree that obtaining the license under false pretenses is not legal, or moral. So I would not support the suggestion to say he lost it. My only point was that Handyman may not have broken the law with his replacement license. When I moved to NJ in 1994 they confiscated my FL license (I know, I moved the wrong way), they would not even punch a hole in it and allow me to keep it. When I asked why, she just said "people do illegal things with these." I informed her that by her logic, she should confiscate my car and pretty much everything I own. I was also required to take the written test--maybe only because of my snide comments though.
  6. Who is in violation? Handyman, or the agency that issues the NJ DL after he checked off on being licensed to drive in another state? IANAL, but it seems like the question is there to help regular people (not lawyers) comply with the law. If the citizen applies in good faith and is honest on the form, I would hope the onus would be on the agency. Why even have the question if they just ignore it?
  7. Or paying with their whole lives, and maybe your life as well!
  8. And DO NOT die in NJ--the estate death tax exemption is $675,000 and it is a pretty steep levy once you hit the $675K--I believe it is an effective rate of 37% on the $52,175 above the exemption, then it drops down to single digits. And I do not believe there is a spousal pass-through exemption. i.e. you can inherit your spouses entire estate, but your exemption remains at $675K. If you do plan to die in NJ and you exceed the exemption (which really is not much when you consider home prices and inflation) consider legal advice for estate planning. And do not will your estate to anyone in NJ as they will also pay an inheritance tax on anything over $25K I believe.
  9. Would be interesting to see what would happen and reaction if thousands of people showed up carrying for a BLM or Occupy style protest. I suppose it would be difficult to muster a big enough crowd though, most gun owners would have to weigh the possible outcome of civil disobedience and most of us have a lot to lose.
  10. Thanks. I bought the Outback Limited 2.5 and I knew about this recall, so I made sure to ask and check. Of course they are not going to sell a car that has not been fixed. So far I love the car. Especially the hi-tech safety and convenience features (Eyesight) that keep you in the lane and maintain following speed under adaptive cruise. But, like buying computers or phones, I wish I could have waited 5-10 years to get a fully autonomous car... I used the CR reviews and Edmunds in making the decision. My highest priority is safety, and the Outback gets 5* on every NHTSA crash test and Good across the board from IIHS plus the Eyesight collision warning/avoidance system was ranked near the top by IIHS. As far as my research goes, only the Volvo XC90 would have been better, but it was substantially more cash (and I hate spending so much on a depreciating asset). CR recommended using Truecar for pricing. I found that Truecar is not exactly as accurate as CR would have you believe. But, knowing this, it can help you ballpark a decent price. My final price came in about $1200 under their "invoice" price and about $800 under the "Truecar" price. I passed on the extended warranty and had to make them take off the $300 etching fee that they tried to sneak into the contract. I guess that is the new undercoating. but they did not give me any pushback on that. I also like a lot of the extras that are included with the Subaru and/or Limited trim level, like the roof rack, all-weather mats and other protective items. Nicer faux-wood accents, rear heated seats and rear environmental controls, etc. I drove a Rav4 and was pretty unimpressed with that. The ride and the interior seemed on the cheap side, like Toyota has tried to cut costs on a lot of the interior appointments. But I probably would say the same thing about the Subaru Forester--which is the appropriate comparison to the Outback. Toyota used to have a Venza, but that was discontinued and they really do not have anything equivalent to the Outback (and of course Subaru does not have a 3-row SUV either). Thanks for all the input on this!
  11. As for legality, my reading of law allows you to carry (open or concealed) on your lands. IANAL but I wouldn't recommend OC. Especially if neighbors can easily see you. And make sure you know your property lines. I know mine end about 50 feet short of the street, so (if I did carry) I would not go near the mailbox.
  12. I do this often. Especially if I want to soak anything in mineral spirits. Open air provides much better ventilation than open windows. But I am not easily visible out back. I remember once I was working in the back(no firearms involved) and a patrolman came around to ask questions. Apparently there was an incident in the neighborhood and he wanted to know what I heard or saw. He had knocked on the front door but I didn't hear outback. I always wonder how that would go had I been cleaning or dry firing my 1911. Also be careful. I accidentally launched my guide rod spring and retainer into the grass. Found the spring but never found retainer.
  13. Yeah, I have been at Lemoore, CA on 113F/13%RH day. Yes it was hot, but I would take that over 95+ with 100% humidity
  14. I think 100-108 and < 20%RH or so in Yuma is not bad as long as you consume plenty of liquids--better than 95/100% humidity that we get here in NJ. Over 110F is a little too warm for me to do much outdoors, but if that is the case you can do outdoor activity early in the morning and avoid the worst of it.
  15. Thanks for all the information--everyone. Amazing the amount of expertise available on this forum! We drove the Outback the other day and liked it--Wife likes the ride, which is most important. I am leaning toward the 3.6. MPG is not a major consideration--I drive about 20-30 miles/day and my 2009 car had less than 50K miles. It will probably take me 20 years to get 150K miles. Since the wife liked it I may just go forward without even test driving anything else. I just need to figure out the best option for getting the best deal now.
  16. Not only no rain, but pure blue skies with no clouds other than contrails--almost every day! I did notice a few days when the winds would pick up into a dust storm where the viz would get pretty bad. Other than that, great weather, although it does get warm in July/August.
  17. Thanks for all the responses. I am looking at the Limited trim, still on the fence between 2.5I4 and 3.6V6. I will post an update when I pull the trigger.
  18. I need to buy a new car and the Subaru Outback is coming up pretty high on my list. Its excellent crash test ratings and solid reviews are the largest factor. Reliability seems right up there close to Toyota and Honda, plus the collision avoidance and tech-based safety package looks pretty good. I have never owned a Subaru before--Anyone have good or bad experiences with the brand? Other contenders are Honda/Toyota CUV/SUV (CRV/RAV, Pilot/Highlander)--the larger (Pilot/Highlander) SUV was my original plan, but looking at the Outback I realize it is big enough, great safety ratings, and better ownership costs (especially considering fuel). I drove the Outback today and loved it. Just trying to come up with a reason not to buy it. Thanks!
  19. I spent January through late March in Yuma this year and only saw rain one day on 7 January when I was driving out of Phoenix. Coming back to NJ and I can't believe I have been living with these overcast, rainy days for so long here! And I grew up in Seattle. I gotta escape PRNJ.
  20. <sarcasm>They should be getting FID and CCW as well!<\sarcasm>
  21. So what happens in 2017 when we likely get a non-Republican governor? I know some many would say we don't currently have a Republican governor, but do you think a D would have vetoed anything that came out of the legislature post-Sandy Hook? And what kind of commissions/study do you think a D governor will order to study NJ gun laws? CC has pretty much maintained the status quo, maybe improved things slightly, but I fear the next administration.
  22. Thx Lalo, I will probably go with one of the "Next gen" units... let me know how yours works out.
  23. My understanding of the Firestick is that it primarily oriented toward streaming video and maybe some apps. I would like to be able to email (web-based client or possibly Outlook) and view Office/PDF in addition to streaming. And for much more than a sentence or two, I do prefer to use a keyboard vs. other input methods (so far).
  24. Anyone have experience with these "Compute Stick" devices? It is a computer on a stick that plugs into an HDMI port. Typically they have an Atom type processor, 4GB RAM running W10. I am not sure how well that is going to work. I would like to pair it with a bluetooth keyboard for basic web browsing/email and streaming video on an older (non-smart) TV. I had been using a Logitech Revue (yes, I still have a working Logitech Revue), which I really liked--especially the IR blaster. But the Revue is almost useless now, and Logitech seems to have abandoned the product line. http://www.amazon.com/Intel-Compute-BOXSTK1AW32SCR-Windows-32-bit/dp/B01ASB0DJ8/ref=pd_sim_147_1?ie=UTF8&dpID=31DxgxIa9rL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=1BHS6T0CXSC229RY44A0 http://www.amazon.com/dp/B01B16RH02?psc=1
