emptyshell 0 Posted September 26, 2010 So...If this question may have been covered in a prior thread...forgive me...it's my first post. I applied for, and received my id card. Along with that came my permit for one pistol. Purchased a Glock 19 that I am totally happy with. Question is...when I go to my local PD and ask for my next permit, approx. how long am I going to wait before I receive it? I noticed a thread that said some of you get multiple permits at one time...Am I wrong in assume that you guys are doing this because each additional permit has a long wait period? I have my eye on a H&K m23...and would love to get it! Thanks in advance.
bbk 188 Posted September 26, 2010 There is nothing written in the law that states you cannot apply for multiple permits (regardless of what your local PD tells you). One [hand]gun a month law (OGAM) dictates you have to wait a full month from the date of your last handgun purchase to purchase another handgun using permits. Many people will get two or three permits at once because between the local PD and NJSP, the process can be very lengthy. So, for example: Consumer A applies and receives three pistol permits (which are good for 90 days, and renewable for another 90 days). He immediately uses one for a purchase. He then waits a month as prescribed by law, and purchases another using the second permit. A full month later, he can then use his third permit. Technically, a person could apply for five permits at once, and, by renewing the permits, he can safely use the other two within those 180 days (including when two permits were renewed). I would say six permits, but with the overlap of months, by the letters of the law, I don't know if it would be quite legal.
Malsua 1,422 Posted September 26, 2010 The delay depends on the town. You can get as many permits as you;d like but you can only use 1 every 30 days and they expire in 90 although you can renew for an additional 90 making 6 the effective upper limit. My town is about a month, some towns are a few days, some 60+ days for pistol permits. You have to do everything but the fingerprinting to get an additional pistol permit so you may as well get at least 3.
tommy3rd 132 Posted September 26, 2010 Yes, for the most part of new jersey the waiting period is atrocious. There's only a few towns out of 500+ municipalities that will get you the permit in less than 30 days. So, I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of folks here suggest that you get multiple permits each time you apply.
