References for ID application

App asks for "two reputable persons who are presently acquainted with the applicant, other than relatives."

 

When I picked up the paperwork I was told "not a cop from the town I was at" and "not a relative with the same last name."

 

What exactly are my your references asked? Do you think in-laws are ok?

According to the criteria they gave you yes. Actually, legally, the only prohibition is listed right on the application. Your local PD cannot make-up restrictions for your application.

 

What they ask depends on what town you live in. The PD has more latitude here, as they hide behind the statutory requirement for a background investigation. I'm of the position that your references should only be asked questions about your character and there should be nothing mentioned about guns, shooting or even why they are being asked the questions, other than a "non-criminal background investigation".

 

But that's just me.
