SKS or AK or AKM what's legal with detachable mag

Recommended Posts

I have an opportunity to buy a SSR-85c-2 hybrid with a belgium barrel. Apparently these guns were assembled in the USA by texas armory company a few years back. The gun has a detahable mag it is NJ compliant in every other way (no flash hider, bayonet, more than 10 round mags, etc.) but according to the state police website SKS with detachable mags in any configuration are illigal assault weapons. This however is more like an ak47. But their website says no ak47 variants either. My dilema is I don't really know what this gun is classified as. Does anyone have experience with this particular gun. Supposedly it is stronger metal 1.6mm vs 1.0 used on an ak47. While it is akin to an ak47 it is not actually an ak47. Same way a saiga is different. It is a nice gun but I am not looking to buy a liability... thanks

thanks for the replies. If anyone knows any additional info on these rifles please let me know. I am still undecided on purchase, but thinking yes. Did some research on net and all looks positive. I just get worried about any clear cut issues living in this beautifiul state of NJ. Talked to FFL guy involved he says as long as nj compliant it is fine. A double and triple check is always prudent. Definitely NJ compliant configuration in every other way
