  1. I'm graduating college in May. I'd be shocked if I was still here 3 years from now. Love some things about NJ, but the negatives just weigh too heavily. I can't imagine buying a house and starting a family here.
  2. I just like the big boom when you pull the trigger. I use mine for "sport" mostly, but always have defense in mind and would love to start making some out-of-state hunting trips soon, so my Tikka T3 .270 can stop collecting dust.
  3. Not to sound like a complete moron, but being a new Mosin owner, how do you pronounce "7.62x54" when you say it out loud? I don't want to sound like an idiot when talking about my own gun.
  4. Seriously. Consider yourself lucky in that aspect.
  5. The duck call drives me absolutely nuts, especially since I'm always around the used gun rack, which is where the people keep blowing those stupid things. And for minutes and minutes at a times. I know that if you're looking at the used rack, the gun library guys tell you to go in there instead of the counter to do the paperwork.
  6. Fair enough. He stripped it down and cleaned it before he gave it to me and said everything looked fine. And i think the same, having looked it over myself. Just wasn't sure if that was enough with a gun that's this old.
  7. So my buddy got me a sweet Mosin Nagant 91/30 for Christmas. Made in 1942, matching numbers, great condition, awesome color, and the bolt is smooth as glass. We were talking about shooting it, and I started wondering if it was even safe to just put a round in and go bang. Should I get it checked out to see if it's safe for firing? He got it at Sarco in Easton. Do they give their rifles any treatment before selling them or is it possible that it might blow up in my face?
  8. I pulled up behind this guy at a light today. Made me think of this thread immediately. I know you can't read any of the stickers, but nearly all of them are pro-gun. At that point, it's just annoying.
  9. That's awesome. Congratulations to him, and to you, and thanks to both sons for their service.
  10. Should also mention that if you don't have your FID yet, buying at Dick's can prove to be a challenge, especially in NJ. A decent amount of Dick's require it for ammo purchase as a store policy. That issue rarely comes up in PA, although I've heard stories about some PA Dick's asking NJ guys for FID. When I buy shotgun ammo in Easton, I don't get asked for mine. But who knows, maybe it's different for handgun. I don't think it is, though. At least not at the Easton Dick's. Hope that helps. And welcome to the forum, by the way!
  11. Cabelas is an amazing store in general, but if you're just looking for cheap ammo, that's probably not the ideal place. I'm not an expert, but i'm pretty sure their prices aren't any cheaper than your average gun shop. But you should head out there anyway. Don't even need a reason, the place is just like a Mecca. I don't really buy much in bulk. I buy cases of 250 shotgun shells at a time, but that's about it. Your best bet is probably a Dick's or Walmart across the border. Or ordering online somewhere. Hopefully those who are more experienced with this will chime in.
  12. Haha fair enough, Paul. I didn't include that third option in my list of hypotheticals.
  13. Yeah, but if we're thinking about burglary vs. robbery, I'd rather be burglarized than robbed. If I'm not home and someone breaks into my house and steals my guns, it's not the end of the world (yes it sucks, but it could be worse). The much more dangerous and scary option is for someone to break into your house in the middle of the night and put you and your family in danger. That's the last thing I want. So if putting a sticker on your house attracts burglary, but at the same time deters robbery, that's a chance I'm willing to take.
  14. I definitely try not to broadcast the fact that I own guns in the public sphere, like on Facebook and Twitter, but I am a proud gun owner and I'm more than comfortable sharing and discussing that fact with anyone who's willing to discuss it. For example, when I buy guns, I refrain from posting pictures of them on Facebook, but I send texts/emails/etc. to people that already know that I'm a gun owner, and share my excitement about the hobby. NRA sticker is proudly stuck to my rear windshield. In reality, it's too small for anyone to be able to read while you're driving, so it's more of a matter of personal pride for myself. This is a great topic for discussion.
  15. I really hope you guys don't think I was seriously suggesting that anyone should buy a gun based on the noises it makes... I figured that was bizarre enough for anyone to take it as sarcastic. Guess not. Fair enough on the tactical model. Can't say I disagree with that point. Same goes with the point about pumps vs. semi-auto. I never advocated for a pump over a semi-auto, but the OP mentioned two pumps, so that's what I went off of. Not sure if I'd be comfortable using a pump in that kind of situation. Would probably feel much better with a semi-auto, provided I was comfortable with the tube capacity.

    Hello

Hey, welcome to the forum. Rutgers 2012 here, barring a major disaster over the next 5 months.
  17. Go with whichever sounds scarier when you rack it, because you can't really go wrong with either. My two cents - the 870 makes a better racking noise. In all seriousness, either would be fine. But if it's gonna be for strictly home defense, get a tactical model.
  18. I'll go there to buy shotgun shells, but only because that's just about the easiest gun purchase you can make. Although some Dick's stores require FID for shotgun shells too, even though the law doesn't. But based on what I've heard and read, buying handgun ammo or a gun there is a nightmare. No thanks. I'll stick to a real gun shop.
  19. Rutgers New Brunswick. Senior year. Good to see other people as young as me on here. I thought I might have been all alone.
  20. Never been to Hawaii, but I hear it's overrated. California is gorgeous. All parts of it. The weather in San Diego is unreal, the coastal towns like Santa Barbara and Monterey are phenomenal, San Francisco is my second favorite city behind Chicago, and up north, near Napa Valley, you have picture perfect weather and scenery. The whole state is a win, as far as vacation is concerned. Not to mention, everyone there is so much nicer and more laid back than they are here. I actually like that about NJ, but it's nice to escape it once in a while.
  21. I'm going to Chicago and St. Louis January 6th-9th for hockey, steak, and ribs. Just booked everything today. Can't wait to get away for a few days.
  22. Handed in my last final paper today. Winter break until MLK Day in January. It feels real good. The bright side to a take-home written final is that you don't have to stress over studying. All the answers are there for you, you just have to find them and write about them.
  23. Now you're talkin'. That was my suggestion.
