  1. To the OP (oringinal poster) -Congrats on taking your sister shooting. If you can, introduce her to a nice Ruger or Smith revolver. 4 inch barrels have a nice balance for newbies. Firing 38s through nice sized revolver is less recoil than 9 but more than 22. Also if she should ever think about purchasing her own revolvers are the simplest to understand, operate and clean. To the person with the nephew.....most boys/young men are fastinated by firearms...as are many older men! As others have said though, from what you described he sounds well rounded and social. When I was younger EVERYTHING was a gun or a sword....sticks, brooms, cardboard tube of gift wrapping paper, etc, etc!
  2. FYI - Virgin Mobile is owned and on the Sprint network.
  3. If you don't require the latest phone then check out Virgin Mobile. I purchased a phone for $180 in April of 2012 (Motorola Triumph...3G phone). Pay $25 a month for 300 minutes (which I never use), unliimited internet, unlimted texting. I think they "throttle" (slow down your download speed) if you go over a limit but as I understand it you would have to be an extremely heavy user before you get throttled. The montly fee has gone up since I purchased my phone to $35 a month. I just purchased an Ipone 4s (8g) for my wife for $99 through radio shack. So for 2 years service at $35 a month plus the $99 for the phone is $939 or just under $40 a month for phone & service. There is no contract though and you aren't locked in at all. Radio Shack was out of the phones but they ordered it at the same sales price and it will be delivered to us for free. Not sure if they are still offerering that price though. I've been with Virgin Mobile for close to 4 years now (had a slider phone prior to this one) and I've been happy. I had Verizon prior to that. $55 at the time for just 400 minutes of talk time per month (with I again hardly ever used) with NO texting and NO internet. I am by no means a high usage cell phone user. I probably use maybe 100 minutes a month of the 300 minute talk time. Mostly use to do some light texting, read the occasional email and read this forum when on train to an from work. I live in Cental NJ and work in NYC. Few "low bar" areas but not bad reception at all. If you live in very rural area your coverage may not be as good. I think they have a coverage map on their website to show what type of reception you could expect to get. Good luck....and ditch Verizon!
  4. Thanks to everyone who let me use their shoties. Weather wasn't as cold or windy as I was anticipating and ended up being another terrific day!
  5. Thanks guys. I'll bring shells and clays ......and doughnuts.
  6. There seems to have been a huge increase in new gun owners as well. I'm in that group as are many people I've meet during my trips to the range during the past few months. Many truely new owners start out with a 22 and that could be an additional factor driving demand for that caliber. Large influx on new buyers for limited supply will keep prices higher and shelves thin. I started out with larger calibers (357 & 9mm) and have been purchasing when I can find at reasonable prices but haven't encountered any shortages. I usually shop at Dick's in South Plainfield, Effingers, Heritage Guild (Branchburg or Easton) or Sarcos in Easton. Think I usually pay about $15 for box of 50 9mm.....some times a little more and some times a little less and around $19 for 38s & $24 or so for 357....but I just got the 357 so not yet sure what an"good price" is for 38 & 357. Look, be patient and purchase periodically and she should be happy. If you wait until you are leaving for the range you may be out of luck....especially on a weekend when every one else is doing the same. As weather gets colder I think we'll see a lull in people heading outside to the ranges and supply increasing which should make ammo more available and perhaps a liitle more affordable.
  7. If people don't mind me borrowing their guns I'll be there with clays and shells....and maybe some dounuts. My sister inlaw may come as well. I'll be purchasing the Mossberg 500 Home Security and Field combo when funds allow. Due to an unexpected (like they are ever expected) car repair a little while ago, the wife needing a modern cell phone (her's is a real cheap-o pay as you go from like 2003) and Christmas quickly approaching the Mossie will have to wait a bit. Look forward to seeing everyone and meeting some new people.
  8. I'll have to find the link and post it but I saw an interesting gun storage unit that looks like an ottoman. I guess you could purchse 2. 1 would hold just ammo and the second could hold your guns (or some of them depending on how many you have). Here it is: https://www.gun-cabinet.com/store.html?product=78&back=3 Just saw that Overstock.com has same item for about same price but with free shipping: http://www.overstock.com/Sports-Toys/Gun-Concealment-Bench/8006780/product.html Looks nice and I like the entire "hiding in plain site" idea.
  9. That after you obtain your FID that you have to go through THE ENTIRE PROCESS all over again to get additional pistol permits. Even if only a few weeks have passed .....how stupid. And all the other rules on top of that.....Friggin' Jersey!
  10. Public hangings used to be notorious for pick pockets.....just an interesting little tid bit.
  11. O-My-God! 3 in a month! I'm going now to see if I can get my permission slip signed!
  12. THE AWESOMENESS!!!.....DUH! But really, to echo what several have said....for me the ergos are just fantastic. It is almost as if the gun becomes part of my hand. It is like its not even there....if that makes any sense. Not to get all Zen like but I become one with the gun. Very accurate shooter right out of the box as well. Price point is very good for such a good gun as well. The fact that many have never heard of CZ before adds to the mystique. Having one is like belonging to a special secret club. I really like the way the Berreta 92s look but as another poster said the thickness of the grip is just a turn off for me...especially compared to my CZ75-B. Different strokes for different folks.....
  13. It's 7am and I'm browsing this thread thinking, "Mmmmmm, that sounds tastey". Mostly in reference to the dark beers that I haven't had. Milk Stouts could be a breakfast drink.....right??
  14. Okay, thanks. Hopefully I haven't long to wait.
  15. How long did it take you to receive membership card? I joined very end of July (almost August) and still waiting. Heard it is taking about 3-4 months for people to receive them.
  16. What a great day. Can't wait to see the pics. Nice meeting everyone! See ya' all at the next one.
  17. Actually they do. That is exactly what was happening in my town a few years ago. Thieves would walk around late at night/early in morning and simply try the car door. If it opened they stole mostly loose change or anything of value. They were getting GPSs, laptops, etc in addition to loose change. I live in a very densely populated area where many park on or close to the street. By leaving your car unlocked you are making it easier to be a target. By leaving valuables in your car and leaving it unlocked you are just asking for trouble. If you don't leave valuables in your car and lock it why would someone want to break in? Unless they are trying to steal your car. Then yes, if they want it they will get it. But still, why make it that much easier? Do people who don't lock their cars at night leave their home unlocked as well? I mean if they want whats in your house they are going to get it any why so why bother locking the door to your home at night?
  18. Can some people bring some extra eyes & ears please. I'm bringing 3 people with me. Thanks and see all y'all tomorrow!
  19. Look under the rifle forums, AR subsection. Tons of info there. I have been thinking about the same thing. Everyone says they are easy to build but expect to spend some money on tools in addition to the gun parts.
  20. GSK1 - I've been interested in the EAA Witness Match for some time now. Several weeks ago I had the pleasure to meet another forum member who had one and allowed me to shoot his. The Match is single action only (hammer fired) and was very nice to shoot. Very crisp, light trigger. While I only fired a few magazines I found it to be very accurate. We did a quick caliber conversion to 22 and it fired flawlessly. I really like the versatility of the caliber concersion kits. I will most likely be picking one up next year. Glad to hear you have enjoyed yours.
  21. Welcome. You may want to look at Westfield and Cranford. Both have train stations in town. Westfield is an express stop to and from NYC on the Raritan Valley line. Only one or two stops from Penn Station when you catch the express Both have a downtown area. Morristown in Morris County is nice as well and train station in town but will be longer commute. Good luck with the house hunt! PM me know if you need a good real estate agent to help in your house hunt.
  22. Blake - I've never fired a 40 but have heard from others they are a very snappy and harsh round. Maybe try if in 9 or 45? Those Baby Eagles ae very nice looking!
  23. Hello and welcome to the forums. Congrats on the little one on the way! You should come check out the Shotgun Shoot Out This Saturday in Clinton. Weather should be great for it! Any idea what your first firearm purchase will be? Lots of information on the forums for you to research and lots of people here will give you input/feedback. Some may even let you check out and 'test drive" their guns if they shot in the same area as yourself! Plenty of good people here. Morristown is nice area, you'll like it. Plenty of restaurants and bars, some arts and plenty of open space around Morris County. Enjoy!
  24. By "CZ75 inspired" I mean other guns where the slide rides inside the frame rails rather than outside. I believe this is probably the largest design feature which differentiates CZ from other guns. Up until about 4 months or so I had never heard of CZ before. In the short time I have been exposed to them (thanks SOF!) I have been very impressed. From the ergonomics, the way the grip feels in my hand and, of course, their accuracy there is just something pretty special about them. So I was wondering, what other CZ inspired guns have others purchased? Have you been as happy with those purchases as you were with your CZ?
