Ruger 10/22 vs Marlin 795

Recommended Posts

Anyone who has shot both have any input?

The word on the street is that the Marlin is much cheaper (I think MSRP is $195), comes with a bunch of the stuff you need to add onto the Ruger (trigger, swivels, etc) and only needs tech-sights sights to become excellent.

I didn't realize the Marlin had sold a lot more than the Ruger; with all the talk about Rugers you would think they would have outsold the Marlin 10:1!

Anyone use the Marlin much?

Well... I've noticed that the 795 isn't as robust as the 10/22 - I've seen two of them barf their ejectors right out of them at Appleseed Shoots (where we shoot anywhere from 500 - 1200 rounds in a weekend), and I've heard of it happening to others.

I'd pay the extra for the 10/22. They're built like tanks and you can literally replace EVERY part on it with aftermarket parts should you so desire. (My first 10/22, acquired in 1981, now has a Weaver scope, VQ extractor, an extended mag release and the bolt release and the hammer have both been modified. I've also added sling swivels and a Garand-style sling.)

They both have a place in the Market the 10/22 is great out of the box or to make into a 2k + match rifle or taticool out into 500 different rifles it was never meant to be. Marlin makes a fine .22 I have several in semi and bolt action. My favorite is a Glenfield model 60 I got for $35.00 rusted to the core with a good barrel. 3 day's of soaking and scrubbing and 3k rounds later from me and it's still runs like a champ.

My favorite is my TC R-55 but that's in another spending class on it's own.

If you are going to get a .22 and have no use or want to mod it out I would go for the Marlin,

If you want to make it into a MG-42 down the line then the 10/22 is your choice.

Lol! I saw one of these at a gun show. It is an incredibly awesome idea, but the plastic makes it look fake and cheap. Maybe if I ever get a man cave. I could put one of these together and put it on display

    • We never let then inside.  Last re-evaluation was 6-7 years ago, wife politely told him that he was welcome to look around the property and he could look in the windows. He saw two white resin chairs in the basement and told her that this constituted a finished basement. And everything in the basement is bare concrete/ cinder block, and mechanical systems. Nothing finished about it. Ultimately he relented and I'm sure that was a ploy to coerce us to allow him in

    • The  12-1 compression ratio L88 is long gone. This is GM's updated version. it might be  pump gas 10-1 engine The L88 was a aluminum head  cast iron block engine with a nasty solid lifter cam. the  ZL1 was a all aluminum  12 or 13-1 compression ratio engine with the best forged internal parts at the time and had a even nastier solid lifter cam
    • I like my regular carry holster.  OWB leather with belt slots.  I've been carrying for over a year and it was comfortable and I hardly even noticed it.  I carry (usually) a Ruger LCP .380 - light, convenient, tiny. But...today I ended up taking it off an leaving it home after a few hours. I cut down a big maple tree a few days ago and I spent 3/4 of today loading and unloading firewood into the back of my truck and a trailer.  It was a warm day, I was dirty, tired, sweaty, and my holster was rubbing against my side.  The leather and exposed metal snap was no longer comfortable. I'm thinking about adding a layer of something to that part of the holster to soften the contact.  Anything insulating will make it worse.  I don't want a sweaty, hotter holster against my skin.  I'm imagining something thin, breathable, that won't absorb sweat, and softer than leather, metal snaps, and rivets.   But I have no idea what would work. I'm hoping somebody else has already figured this out and I can just do what they did. Any suggestions appreciated.
    • Check the primers on the ammo you didn't shoot yet. Are they fully seated? If the primer is not just below flush with the back of the case, the first hit can seat it better then the second hit ignites it.
