M1A and M14

Recommended Posts

Is the M1A rifle mostly the same as the M14 rifle?

Are there normal production versions of the M1A rifle that are NJ legal?

I believe the M1A is just the civilian semi-auto version of the M14. It is definitely Jersey legal. There is an Attorney General directive posted on the NJ State police website specifically about it (and the Colt Match Target rifle).

Outwardly they look the same. In actually many M14 were not fully automatic. They had a lockout installed which prevented full auto.

The biggest difference between the Springfield Armory M1A series and tha US M14 made by several vendors was in the receiver. the commercial Springfield is a cast receiver and the military used forged receivers. For the average user, it doesn't matter. There are some commercial forged receivers now on the market, the best known and most plentyful being the LRB with a new vendor just out called James Rivers Armory.

Just a couple of things to watch out for if you're buying from out of state;

Older Springfields, (and others) had a bayonet lug on the flash suppressor so they're a no-no, but easily replaced before shipment. (Flash suppressors themselves are OK though, as long as they don't have the lug).

Some companies stamp "M-14" on the receiver, so they're obviously a no-no also, even though they're really just M1A's.

The "normal" mags are 20 rounders, so they're no-go too.

Other than that, you can't go wrong -- awesome rifle to shoot!

10 round magazines are easy to obtain. CMI is the prime government contractor for M14 magazines at the moment. They are as good or better than USGI which are expensive or they are fakes in many cases.

All shipments from Springfield Armory come with ten round magazines. The flash suppressor is a non-issue. Replacements can be easily be found from placed such as Fulton or Brownell's and easier replaced using a simple tool in a few minutes. Even that isn't a problem as new shipments for many yeas did not have the lug on them regardless ocf the shipment location. So any new M1A is NJ legal.
