Advice on rests etc

Recommended Posts

Just starting to get into rifles and spent some time talking to people today. Was looking at the Caldwell Rock BR rest and and a bag on back. Anyone ever used it or have any other recommendations. Something tells me this web shopping spree will be expensive. I am pretty awful, I figure I can pick up the rest and get myself some lessons. Anything else you think would be a good investment?

Thanks

Those things work fine if you're trying to sight in a rifle to a gnats eyelash, but it's not really necessary. People buy those, use 'em a few times and sell 'em. Check Ebay, craigslist, NJ hunter and save a few bucks.

A front sandbag will do just as well. I have a Caldwell bag I bought for like 15 bucks and my Rifles are sighted in just fine for practice.

Thanks, I am looking to hunt not competitively shoot, but I want to make sure I am proficient when I go out. I would hate to have my prize all lined up and walk away empty handed.

What distance and what power scope? You'll probably find using any old rest(sand, range bag, ammo boxes, etc.) will help you when it comes time to take the shot on an animal. You have to learn to breathe right, steady your aim and squeeze. In a gun vise you can clamp the thing down and take shot after shot until you're zero'd in but it won't help you a bit when hunting.

Those things can certainly be a good tool for getting the scope dialed in, I genuinely don't think they're necessary 200 yards or less unless you're competing.
