S&W sigma Trigger modifications

Hi everyone, I just recently purchased a 40ve and am currently looking for advise on some mods to improve the feel of the trigger pull and break.I realize I'm out in the open here to get chastised by glock owners so lets try to keep to the topic.

 

So far I've removed the sear assembly and polished the cam surface of the shear block. Which was not entirely as bad as I have seen on other sigmas. Must be a factory improvement on the newer VE's. This greatly improved the feel of the trigger break and will probably get even more butter like if i polish the inside of the slot in the block, but there is still that 12lb trigger to address. The way I see it is there are three options here.

 

1. Remove outer spring and pig tail from sear assembly (not my favorite option)

2. install lighter springs in sear

3. install reduced tension striker spring (this is my H.D. weapon so click no bang is not an option)

 

I would prefer to replace springs with lighter sets rather than remove them all together for the obvious accidental discharge factor and legal/moral liability should this occur and missing parts are discovered upon impound of the weapon.

 

 

Soo... any of you sigma owners out there let me know your experiences. Success, failure, tips, what springs you used etc. I'm not looking for a competition trigger out of this. 6-7lb pull just to ease finger fatigue at the range. I'm leaning towards the striker spring, Wolff makes one that reduces from 4.75 to about 3.5.

Wow!... I figured with just the mention of a sigma this post would have been good for atleast a few shots of verbal abuse .

 

Any way I took it to the range this weekend and ran about 250 rounds through it with just the polish job and then with the pigtail and outer sear spring removed. performed flawlessly not a single FTF. What a difference with the springs out. My plan is to try out the Wolff striker spring and try to find a lighter spring on the sear to try to get that nice break out of it without eliminating the original parts placement.

I say try the wolf spring and leave it alone. It shot well and the trigger pull was comfortable while we were at the range.

Apex makes a spring kit for the SD pistol. Might be a long shot but I am under the impression the SD shares some components with the old Sigma. Their customer service is legendary so I would recommend giving them a call to find out if the kit is interchangeable. Heck, you might even get Randy Lee answering the phone and I would not be surprised if he had some good advice on what to do next even if he has no products for you.

Thanks LorenzoS, I'll definitely give them a try. As I understand it the SD is the new version of the sigma with the main design changes being in ergonomics and styling. I'll let you know how it works out.

the smith & wesson forum has a stickied post on sigma trigger jobs. There's not much you can do to make the trigger lighter without it being unreliable. IIRC you cna smooth it up and go form like 12lb to 10lbs and tht's about it.

I've read tons of posts on the S&W forum, and the only solid conclusion I can find is controversy. Some people rip springs out and claim flawless performance and others claim the pistol is good for nothing other than a paper weight. I'm realistic and don't expect to end up with the feather, light glass breaking feel of a precision made high-end SA trigger. And I figure the relatively low price of spring kits its worth a shot. I figure I will try a few different combination's and run as many rounds of different ammo through it as i can. If the people who claim to have gone with lighter striker springs and run excess of 1500 rounds with no FTF. are not just blowing smoke then that's plenty reliable for me. Either way the reputation built by the earlier models and the intense controversy of the guns reliability and quality combined with the opinions of people who have never held let alone fired one will surely leave me being just another SIGMA STATISTIC regardless of my results.

 

PS a smooth 10lb trigger VS a rough 12lb is still a total success for me. If it were a hot-wheels car, I would be trying to put different wheels on it, and breaking out the model paint. I never could figure out how to leave well enough alone.
