Is there a way to improve a Savage MKII magazine release?

I just happened to think of another gunsmithing issue I've been thinking about. I absolutely HATE the magazine release on the savage MKII. I find having to pull a thin metal lever towards me is awkward, and it is just really annoying, it's my main complaint against an otherwise good rifle. I'm not sure if anyone else feels the same way, or if they know of any fixes for this.

There is an aftermarket release you can get the has a handle coming off the bottom for a better grip. Check brownells or midway for gun specific parts and you should be able to find one

I looked through there, no dice. I didn't think so, but the mechanism is so awkward, it shocks me no one has come up with anything better.

 

Maybe I could come up with something, I mean pulling the lever towards the shooter is awkward, I should see if there's a way to do it similar to other rifles where you pull it away from the shooter. No clue if there's a way to work that with the way the magazine fits in or not.
