  1. Truth be told, it's because I think my VZ24's barrel is starting to rust. I've always cleaned it immediately after shooting corrosive, rinsing a little water through the barrel (at least) while at the range (If not a quick clean), followed by a more thorough clean when I get home. But the past few times, every single time I run a patch through there, it comes out a little reddish-brown. After seeing this, I tried to really clean it out, must have run fifteen solvent patches, and it still kept coming out with rust. Basically I was quite upset that this had happened, and decided I didn't really want to shoot corrosive ammo anymore. I know keeping it properly cleaned should prevent any negative effects, but I've been having problems with this (Maybe because I've learned cleaning by myself, and from watching youtube videos?) I guess it's one of those things where I'd probably be better if I came from a gun-owning family. I'm actually rather embarassed with this admission, as I know cleaning a bolt action should be quite easy. I just don't want to risk any further rusting.
  2. I pretty much exclusively shoot with irons. The sight that I've found that I personally do best with (between my vision, and just because of how I am) are Garand-style sights, barleycorn front with a peep rear. I'm not opposed to a RDS, or other device, but currently they're cost prohibitive. Also, I find shooting with irons to be more fun (Going back to my airsoft days when I did have a cheap NCStar mounted on my M14 Socom airsoft gun). I'd like to put a scope on one of my guns some day, and sight it in, just to try my hand at scoped shooting, but I just really enjoy shooting with irons. Of course, I need a lot of practice, and one of these days I will finally get a range membership somewhere where I can shoot a rifle. Last time I brought out my AR I had to aim about a foot below the target because I hadn't properly set my sights, nor knew how to. (Though I've gotten a better front sight since then.) All in all, I guess I just can't justify the expense of advanced optics, or their ability to fail. If I were in competitive shooting I could justify it, but for the rare occasion I actually go to shoot my rifles, it wouldn't be worth it.
  3. Just wondering, as I've been curious about this with SKS rifles. I know that those with detachable magazines are banned, why is this? Is it due to the fact they usually have the bayonets attached? I was under the impression almost all SKS rifles had fixed magazines from the get-go, and that detachable mags were a modification.
  4. I haven't seen any for $0.70/rd. I've only seen it for $20/20rds. Though it may be $0.70/rd if you don't factor shipping. Maybe I'll look again. I haven't ordered ammo in a really long time. Maybe it's come down a bit--last time I was pricing 8mm was when the whole threat of the AWB was going on.
  5. It is hard to get cheaply my friend lol. I know a lot of people who shoot .30-06, but don't load it. I'm also looking to get a K98k around May-June as a "Graduation gift" for myself, and do not want to shoot corrosive ammo out of it. Wait, now I'm more confused. I thought that annealing was heating up the case with controlled temperatures to allow for easier working of the brass. But since you load 8mm mauser, could you help me know what exactly is necessary. And if you have any knowledge of what I can use for the ziptrim I'd appreciate it.
  6. So I have been planning to start converting .30-06 brass to 8mm mauser. I thought that I understood how the process works, but I think I'm more confused than ever. I had initially thought the process was as simple as running .30-06 brass through an 8mm resizing die, and trimming off some excess. So, my girlfriend got me a Lee Ziptrim for my birthday. Not sure what else I need with it, what sort of cutters, or shell holder. I already have a chamfer/deburring tool. Then I saw there were shape/trim dies made by RCBS that can be used before using them in the resizing die. Some people then say to use a hacksaw to shorten the elongated case-neck, then run it through the resizing die. But then some claim you need to anneal the brass. Others say you don't have to. I don't have a setup for annealing, and know nothing about how you do it, or the money or space for an annealer. So what I want to know is this, what do I actually need for my ziptrim, and what do I need to do in order to effectively convert .30-06 brass to 8mm mauser in a way where I won't have a pipe-bomb in my hands?
  7. Well, the way I see it is that they're common, but the price has been trending up in recent years. M91/30s used to be $90, now they're $150-200. I don't think sitting on an unfired mosin will allow you to retire early, but you might be able to make a few bucks on it down the road. Only thing is I would imagine a Mosin made in 1955 has no connection to WWII (or WWI for that matter), meaning that it likely won't have that "This killed some Nat-Zees" appeal so many people like. As for shooting the whales, I cannot condone this, as one of the Pharmacists at work said the only thing I could do with my Biology degree is get a job "Saving the Whales". lol It's weird you mention this. I have a VZ24, but for some reason, the past two weeks I've really been sitting there thinking, "Screw it, I gotta get me a real German Mauser k98k." For some reason I've shifted a bit lately out of wanting to get more modern rifles like AK-type rifles, M14,s, and stuff like that, and have found myself pining for a K98k, or even an enfield.
  8. Semi-related question. I know that GSG is going to be offering a stockless "pistol" remake of the MP40 in 9mm. I'm assuming it will be illegal due to the 50 oz restriction?
  9. IINAL, but the other day, for whatever reason, I was looking up SBR and SBS laws for NJ. Both are illegal, however, If I read correctly, apparently machine guns ARE legal. Someone should confirm that, or if there aren't some restrictions where you can have it, but only if you're a cop, or something like that.
  10. I try to keep around 4-5, but that's more budgetary constraints. I feel that if you see a good deal on mags, then it's worth picking them up. Eventually they'll wear out, and you'll have backups, or can salvage parts or whatever. But especially since 15-round mags are harder to find (and more expensive when you do find them), I generally just think that picking them up when you see a good price is the best idea.
  11. My girlfriend is similar. She didn't like guns before we started dating, but now thinks shooting is super-fun, and joined Penn State's rifle club. She also encourages me to buy whatever guns I want (Not that I can afford to), and has told me that she has no problem with the fact that I'll probably end up buying a lot and collecting them lol. She lives in PA also, so she's mentioned getting her carry permit. Even has offered to buy me Spam Cans of 7.62x54R as gifts XD.
  12. Where is CJRPC? I'd be interested in going, if for nothing else, than to maybe learn some techniques from shooters better than myself, and to sight in my AR's Iron sights. I'd love to learn distance shooting, and have a few scopes, but don't know much about mounting, distance shooting, or any of that stuff really.
  13. I'd suggest getting a Mosin sooner rather than later. When I bought my VZ24, Mosins were still routinely around $90. Now people want $150-250 for a 91/30. I believe that in a few years Mosins will be going for Mauser Prices (Currently around $450-600) Where are you located? If you'd like, maybe we can arrange sometime to meet up and I'll let you try my VZ24. It's a Czech copy of the K98k, and while I have not shot a K98k, I've tried out quite a few of their actions, and can confirm the VZ24 has just as smooth an action. I'd be curious to compare it to the Enfield. Main differences in a VZ24 and a K98k is that the K98k actually had a bolt-stop when the magazine was empty. Many K98s were also made of composite stocks, made from impregnating wood particles with resin under high heat and pressure, whereas the VZ is solid wood. The VZ24 also has, in my opinion, the worst sights ever conceived. The rear notch is very small, and the front post is a fairly wide triangle, making it hard to see for someone with bad eyes such as myself. But yeah, I know with Mosins, their actions aren't as bad as they are perceived. Apparently the main issue is that a lot of time the cosmoline isn't completely cleaned out of the action, which makes the problem a lot worse. But I can't really say I've compared a partially clean one to a completely clean one (So I'm not sure how much of a difference it really makes.) Either way, if you're interested, maybe we could figure something out, shoot some milsurp. I want to try an Enfield myself, but don't know anyone who has one. I know the feeling on the Garand. My Poppop was in the 5th Airforce, 4th Airdrome Squadron in WWII. (Back when the airforce was part of the army). He was issued an M1 Carbine, but sadly there's now way to get one of those in this state. I'd like a Garand as part of my collection. But honestly, with any Milsurp, buying them sooner is better than later. Not like we'll ever get ahold of any milsurp from any conflict more recent than Korea, and the prices on those guns aren't going to go down.
  14. Interesting choice, most people go with Mosins, or Mausers as their first milsurp rifle--VZ24 was mine. I want to get a Lee-Enfield at some point. Main thing holding me back is that I know little about them, including how expensive the ammo is. Everything I've heard says that they're a really nice rifle.
  15. You say they'd want to sell them, and that they have a few THOUSAND Minis? Where would they sell them? And if they'd be sold for a good price, somewhere I might be able to get one, would you "Take a Dive"? lol. Overall, I really want to get my hands on one. I heard some PA gunshow they were selling them $300 or so each. I'm never lucky enough to actually have money when such deals are around, otherwise I'd buy one in a heartbeat. I know the platform gets a lot of crap, I'm interested in getting one to try it out, and see if it's as bad as people say, as I very much doubt that it's that bad. I've seen a few people hit a melon-sized target at 400 yds with a mini14 (or maybe it was a Mini30?) Either way, there's something about the platform I find appealing. Probably has to do with my love affair with the M14.
  16. ...I always thought they were awesome... Only reason I got an AR was because everyone on NJGF said it would be better than a mini14, and I couldn't find a good deal on a mini at the time. I've always sort of regretted it, though I doubt I'll ever sell/trade the AR. I wish that NJ Police Departments sold off old stock to the public, I'd love to get a deal on a Mini. Just wondering, are you taking the course with the Mini just for shits and giggles, or is there a reason you decided to use it over an AR?
  17. This is weird, I made a thread on Reddit just last night asking the same question. Probably should have asked here first, the people on r/firearms don't understand NJ's laws.
  18. I'm currently conflicted. Some of you may know I was planning to try and become a dentist, but working as a pharmacy tech has cured me of any desire to go into healthcare. Now I'm about to graduate and look for a job with my biology degree (probably pursue a masters later.) ANYWAY, I'm torn because my Poppop died in September, and my Aunt is really gung-ho to sell off hsi house superquick, as she's not good with financial decisions. I'd like to buy that house and keep it in the family, as it's where I spent most of my childhood, and Poppop designed it himself. BUT, I really don't want to live in NJ. My gf lives in PA, and so far we've been talking about living there. If I won the lottery, it would make it easy. Maybe I'd buy my house in PA, and my Poppop's house, fix it up, and keep it as a rental property until someone else in the family wanted to move in. Sadly I don't think that I'll have a fulltime job, or be in a position to buy that house before my aunt pressures us to sell it.
  19. That's why it's all the more important to actively support, and foster young people to get into shooting. I think that I'm one of the few who come from a family that ranges from simply "not-liking" guns, to being "passively antigun" (meaning my mom doesn't march with MDA, but expresses her disapproval of firearms.) Anyway, I just sort of randomly got interested and pursued it. But many have no experience with guns. I have tried to take as many people as I can shooting so that, even if they don't become gun owners, they get over their fear, and will at least not buy the BS the antigunners are shoveling.
  20. So this is my first time back on NJGF since November, been busy with school and work and stuff. Is the ammo shortage and price gouging still going on? I've been too broke to buy ammo, what with $1800/semester school payments lol. I'm surprised that the panic buying hasn't stopped. Granted, I suppose that in a normal market, companies produce a specific caliber for a while, and then after building up a large amount of inventory, retool and switch to another caliber. Stock sold to distributors is likely stuff that has been warehoused, and sold off while other calibers are being produced until the warehoused stock gets low. If they have to rapidly switch between calibers because stuff is flying off the shelves, it may increase expenditures in time and money for retooling and stuff. I'm just shocked that the situation hasn't improved in my four month hiatus. I remember thinking back in July that the panic buying would probably end soon, and that companies would be able to fill up their warehouses by October or November, and that by January we'd see a return to normal market conditions. I don't see this being the new "normal", it should only be a temporary thing. I know that line of thinking is why many of these companies are hesitant to invest in new factories and more macines--as the demand may not be enough to support these capital expenditures in the long-haul, totally screwing the companies. But at the same time, people have been talking about the hoarding and panic buying jacking up ammo prices as long as I've been a gun owner. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems as though we've been in a state of higher prices, and decreased availability constantly since 2008. I guess maybe there was a slight reprieve between 2010 and 2011, but it seems as though there was the panic of 2012, and so far all through 2013,2014, and now 2015 things are still in this state of shortage. I'm really starting to wonder if things are ever going to be like they were in the 2004 era or whenever you guys can remember was a "better time".
  21. I've thought about just replacing capacitors, but to be honest, I'm nervous about it, since I dpn't have much experience with soldering.
  22. Really? Let me know, I want a second opinion on the part before I go spending money, maybe sometime soon I can have you over, take a look, talk some guns and such. I live in Stratford actually. So you probably live REALLY close.
  23. Sorry to necropost, but I've been wondering if there's any update on this. I haven't heard anything about imports resuming (or even plans for that). Just wondering if anyone knows the status of Saiga imports.
  24. So it looks like if both the green LEDs in the back are lit up, then that means the A board needs to be replaced ( Which is pretty much the power board.)
  25. Just checked the diagnostics on my Panasonic th42px80u. Green LED on the SS and SC boards (What you referred to as YSUS and ZSUS). Now I'm going to try and figure out what that means.
