  1. Thanks for a good day of shooting, good company and being kind to a noob. not so sure I want to see my score though. mike
  2. so match starts at 10:00, but new shooters should arrive at 8:00 for a safety overview?
  3. If scheduling works out for me, I'm looking to attend this one too. It will be my first foray into any competitive shoot, definitely a noob in that regard. Unfortunately I missed the introduction class, so I'll be there an hour early for the safety overview and intro I have a stock ruger 22/45 mk iii with 5 mags, but I don't have a magazine pouch. Is a mag pouch a requirement or can you stick them in your pockets or waistband (obviously at the expense of speed)?
  4. I know lots of folks go use non-rimfire specific scopes on their rimfire rifles, but not really sure about the other way around. I'm not intimately familiar with the whole Nikon line, so cant tell you if there are any differences other than the reticle (or if that even makes a difference), sorry. With the rebates, the google deal and free shipping, the lower end nikon scopes really become a nice bargain though.
  5. No, I don't think so (or at least it didn't work for me). It treats the offer as a 'coupon' and there seems to be a limit of 1 coupon per order. Picked up a Prostaff Rimfire 3-9x40 for $149 including shipping, minus the $25 offer savings and then there's a $50 rebate on the scope from Nikon. Should wind up being $75 net in the end (or about half off)....not bad.
  6. I don't know if they turned people away, but there were definitely a lot of people there last month (I'd guess 30-35). They did start right on time though.
  7. I can't stand Botach as they never seem to have anything in stock and it takes forever for them to get stuff in, but for glock parts they always seem to have good prices and ship quickly (and free). Just placed order for 3 G19 mags and they came USPS priority in 3 days without issue. http://www.botachtactical.com/glockmagazines.html
  8. http://www.retailmenot.com/view/midwayusa.com These do work
  9. If you want to buy at least 4, when you factor in shipping, cabellas is actually a better deal with their $2 shipping. Plus you get an ammo box.
  10. Happened to drive by last weekend and they finally leveled the place.
  11. Joined today as well. Orientation was thorough and somewhat long, but the guys running it seemed like real good people. Definitely more people there than I expected (I'd say sound 35). Went to the outdoor range and watch a bit of the event going on there, then setup over on the 100yd range for a little plinking with the 10/22 and dial in a new to me scope. Looking forward to spending some more time there and deciding which events to attend.
  12. I'm seriously considering joining as it's the closest range to my house. At these Sunday membership meetings do they provide a tour of the entire facility (indoor and outdoor) and allow for lots of stupid questions? Also, what if your not an NRA member, can you sign up there or provide your membership info later? If there's not an opportunity to see the whole facility, anyone willing to take on a guest and provide a tour prior to next Sunday? Michael
  13. haven't done it but when I inquired, they said they would ship and do the transfer at no additional cost. Tax and nics apply though.
  14. Decent prices, but shipping is kind of high at $18 for 10 boxes and $26 per case of 20 boxes.
  15. I need to check out Nachez. Check out http://www.sgammo.com/catalog/pistol-ammunition/9mm-9x19 very decent pricing, shipping is reasonable if you order in bulk (not so much for small orders) and their service was good for the few orders I've made so far. I picked up a case of Speer Lawman 9mm 115 grn for $215 shipped recently.
  16. When I mentioned the forum, I think I got $5 off the range time or the rental (forget which). They still charged me through the nose for ammo. Definitely wasn't a really pleasurable experience there.
  17. Go to the shore shot forum here, there's a link listing all their rentals (they have the G19, but I don't think your others). I want to say it's $15 and you can try out any guns within the same caliber. Main downside I found there was they make you buy their ammo and its something like $26 for low end 9mm. I had heard about a forum discount, and getting their member pricing on ammo, but all I got was $5 off the rental. Heritage Guild in PA I found to be a much nicer place, nicer staff and ammo is reasonable at $15 a box of 9mm, but you pay $12 per gun to rent. They do have G17 and the HK P30, no PPQ and not sure about the HK45. Would be my choice to go to over Shore Shot.
  18. Didn't see this thread, planned to get there this AM around 9:30 and get a port just after the member time was up, but some things popped up around the house and I didn't get there till 10:01 AM. Lots of people milling about, 10 minutes before one of the staff got freed up to even help, 9 people on the waiting list before me and they said a pretty fresh line-up out on the ports. All that was a 2+ hour wait, so I had to head home. Nice range and nice enough staff, but they're definitely over subscribed, at least on the weekends. I overheard one of the staff saying they had, I think, 850 or so members all ready in 10 weeks of operation. That's great for them, but the times I'm able to go, I just can't justify the 40 minute drive each way plus a long wait. Need to find a private club to join......
  19. I just got a case of it delivered yesterday from SG Ammo. Ordered on Sunday, then sent me the shipping details on Monday, looks like it went out Tuesday out of Oaklahoma and got to me on Monday. Thought $216 shipped was an excellent price, shipping was fair at $16 for a 31lb box of ammo and the purchase was smooth/simple. Like someone else said, its nice that they put the shipping info right up front on the item's page so you know your all in cost without having to go through the whole checkout process. They'll get my business again in the future
  20. OK guys, enough with the back and forth on the 92G. Already stated way up front it wasn't for me, at least right now. Got to the range with my wife this morning. It was her first time to a formal range and I wanted to go somewhere that I knew was clean with professional, friendly staff, so we made the trip out to Easton to go to Heritage Guild. Beautiful day out and a nice drive out 78 made for a quick trip. Got to HG and had to wait 20 minutes for a port as there were a couple medium sized groups that were already ahead of us. Also got hit with a $20 per person fee, not just a $20 per port fee as I had expected....doesn't make much sense to me, but oh well. On to the shooting. My wife has shot small caliber rifles in her earlier years, but this was the first time with a pistol and she was visibly apprehensive. We took it slow and went over all the steps we had gone through the day earlier. She wanted to watch me shoot first to get an idea of how everything looked in action so I loaded up the 3 magazines with my uplula loader (such a simple yet effective device) and setup the G19 without a back strap. With the targets set to 4 or 5 yards, I took aim with what I thought was a comfortable grip and was shooting low and left, with a couple fliers for the first mag. After the second mag, the group tightened up to maybe 5" or so, but still low and left. Up comes my wife and after some clear hesitation to start, unsure of her grip and not quite confident in how to rack the slide ....first time ever shooting a pistol.....shoots a 3" group just high and right at 4 yards. Gotta love it. She said she was very nervous to start, but calmed down by the end of the mag. From watching her once she started to shoot, wouldn't have know it at all. Moved out to 7 yards and I was all over the place for two mags. I took a moment to think about what I was doing and realized I was pushing the trigger with the outer tip of my index finder rather than the center portion of the pad, not focusing on the front sight enough and anticipating the recoil. Moved the trigger position inward, took my time and tried not to anticipate the recoil and I was back to 7-8" groups, just a little low and to the left. Better, but not great. I'm definitely a noob, but something just wasn't feeling right though and I was starting to get a little discouraged in my performance. Up comes my wife and she had the same learning curve at the longer distance, but mostly shooting high. By the third magazine she was also shooting 5-6" groups, thoroughly showing me up and reveling in the fact that the range officer (an older gentleman that was really nice to my wife and I) noticed and commented that 'you're better than he is'. By that time, our hour was coming to a close and we were running low on the ammo we had brought, but I then realized that we still had the pistol setup without a backstrap. I threw on the large backstrap, loaded up the last two mags, threw on a new 'shoot and see' target and sent it out to 7 yards. Grip was much more natural with just a little more room for both hands. Took my time, focused on the front sight and properly squeezing the trigger and, viola, I'm hitting 5" groups just low and to the left with a couple right on the bullseye. I felt vindicated....somewhat. I know it was only 7 yards, but I was pleased with that result. All in all the G19 performed well through the 250 rounds we pumped through, but we had a couple issues with weak/erratic shell ejection hitting us straight back in the face. Happened a couple times with me, but quite often with my wife. She also had one failure to go into battery after her second shot, but I'll attribute that to improper grip or user error as it didn't happen again. From what I understand Federal Champion Bulk ammo is a pretty weak load, so going to order some cases of Spear Lawman or Sellier and Belloit online and see how the pistol performs with better ammo. After our time on the range, I asked my wife how she liked the range time and she said that while really nervous at first, by the end she was really enjoying herself. I think the atmosphere, nice staff and the fact that she shot well really helped in that regard. After cleaning up, packing our stuff and getting ready to leave, my wife asks if we can "go look at guns for her". A little shocked, I ask if she was serious. She indicated that the G19 just didn't feel natural for her and that she had enough fun that she'd like to come back but maybe with another gun. Who am I to argue, so after a couple questions and quick discussion, seems she found the grip of the G19 a little too wide and blocky for her. Off to the showroom to look and see if there's something more inline for her. Again, the staff at HG was super helpful and after we explained what her earlier experience was, they showed her a couple of pistols that might be a better fit. I decided not to give much input during the process so she could see and decide what fit best for her. She said the compacts and sub compacts (especially single stacks) didn't feel right for her and she liked a narrower, rounder grip, but wanted it at least as long as the G19 or longer. On her own and she gravitated to the PX4 full size, PPQ and the M&P 9 full size. Guess that helps solidify which will be next on the list...... On the way home she started talking about the .22 she used to shoot in her teens and started asking about rifles. Then she started asking about shooting clays, how she'd always wanted to try that and what kind of shotgun do you need for that. Then she started asking about clubs to join and where we could go that would be closer to home. Then she had a whole bunch of questions about home defense and laws and.......the list went on. Gotta love my wife, she's such an understanding woman and has always supported my few interests as she knows I don't go into them without a lot of research and commitment once I start. I originally brought her along to learn hands on how to operate a pistol so she'd feel more comfortable with having them in the house (yes, locked up safely in our safe, away from curious hands), but something in the back of my mind was hoping she'd get hooked too. Luck for me she seemed to get both. At some point we'll be getting her some formal basic training and then followed by some more advanced training for the both of us. Thanks again everyone for the advice, both on this thread and on this forum as a whole, for getting us started on our journey and following along for the first part of the trip.
  21. Picked up my new G19 Gen 4 today from Vinny this morning. Was ready to be picked up last night, but had dinner plans with the wife. Two day turnaround from the time I placed the order, super smooth transaction with Vinny with good communication and a great price. Worst part was the 50 minute drive each way. Not sure what my hesitation was, the G19 really does fit my hand well and points naturally. Guess when you rent 3-4 pistols and only get 10-15 minutes each, switching between makes/models, it got tough for me to really decide. Having it for a couple hours has reassured that I made the right decision for the first pistol. This pistol had a 1/19/2012 firing date on the spent casing and came with the updated RSA and extractor, so hoping not to have any of the reported 'erratic ejection' issues. The slide release lever is super stiff to depress as is the overall operation, so hoping it will break in with use. Will probably order an extended slide release lever at some point. Spent the morning reading through the manual along with my wife, going over the pistol's operation, how it worked, how to field strip it/reassemble, etc. From all the research I'd done and hands on with the rentals, I already knew 95% of it, but figured it would be good to go back to basics and walk through it with my wife. The G19 seems to fit her hands well and she's able to rack the slide fairly easily. We're planning on hitting the range later today or early Sunday. Thanks again for the advice. I'm sure I'll be back for discussions on pistol #2 (PPQ, P226, PX4 or Cougar...the list goes on). Michael
  22. Agreed on the vendor sponsors and the price quote tool. I just placed an order for a Glock G19 Gen 4 and the pricing was better than any online site (once you figure in shipping, FFL fees and NICS) and way cheaper than any store price (with tax and NICS). Distributor had it in stock (supposedly they go very fast) and supposed to be a two day turnaround so I haven't picked it up yet. Not really anticipating any problems based on all the positive feedback this vendor has. For the PPQ, though, the online prices are so low ($475-485 and in stock at Cheaper than Dirt and Grab a Gun) that even when you figure in shipping, FFL and NICS, it was tough for vendors or stores to come close. Personally, I'd rather spend a few extra bucks and go through a local guy.
  23. Went with my gut and placed an order with Vinny tonight for a G19 gen 4. Hopefully will have it in a few days. Can't wait!! Will post when I pick it up. Thanks again everyone.
  24. Where do you get that pricing? LEO? Got something going with one of the forum sponsors, hopefully we can close the deal done tomorrow (got late and we didn't finalize the order). Fingers crossed. Michael
