    Survival Gear

Based on some of the suggestions here - anyone have a point of view on small electric devices (ie flashlights, alert radios, etc) and recommendations about buying units and get into the battery rotation game every 6 months or year; or I've seen some flashlights, radios, etc that don't require battery and are 'windup' with an arm on the back/bottom/whatever- but to see them they feel more like a gimmick then something I'd really want to trust in an emergency. Thoughts?

Thanks for the quick responses. Knew you guys would have good leads.
  3. Been an interesting year in NJ, had some good snow, a hurricane, god knows what else. Thinking we are a bit lax in our current state of preparedness - while I'm comfortable identifying and procuring items to have in the home should we need to 'bug in' for some period of days without power, water, etc, I'm looking for a resource that can be trusted to help identify appropriate things for an away bag if we need to head out for 3-4 days. I don't want to be some pre-packaged kit, but would appreciate if any of you folks have web sites, or places to direct someone for good suggestions in terms of things to think about. Also, any suggested places to purchase some of this stuff - as some of these preparedness sites I see online seem a bit sketchy. Feel like much of the basics are down, food, water, water purification, defense, blankets, but what else? Hopefully this will be all for naught but rather have and not need, than the other way around. Thanks. Tom
  4. Thanks for nothing Bobby Brown.

    which 9mm?

Whatever feels good in your hand. Rent some and try them out. I vote when these questions come up for Sig 226, but ultimately it's gotta be something that feels good to you.
  6. Interesting topic....thought I was being excessive with 4 15 rounders for my p226 and four 8 rounders for my 1911....guess I'm good.
  7. Wonder what his pulse rate was while that was going on.
  8. I bought my black valor at Classic Pistol. I'd check with them. They had a few others in stock...this was a few weeks ago but my sense from talking to them was when they ordered DW's they'd get a few at a time knowing theyd have no issue selling them. I'd definitely consider them for future purchases.

    1911 .45 mag issue

+1 Also, you spent hundreds or more on a gun...is another 30 bucks or so too much to resolve the issue?
  10. I spoke with the Detective at my local PD and a buddy in NJSP yesterday independently and asked them both this question (issue of spouse using husbands' gun if he's gone, incapacitated, etc) - as we would be in the same boat at my house. Both indicated they could not ever envision a scenario where their respective units would charge someone in the home - provided they met the criteria of the law - attempt to retreat, fearful for life, etc - that there would be no issue with someone defending themselves and they would not foresee criminal consequences for that. Civil consequences from their family of the burglar likely as I think we'd all expecdt, but not criminal charges from the PD. Don't know about extrapolating that to every town in NJ, but both also reminded me the law and jurors often refer to the 'reasonable person' standard, and what would a reasonable person do, etc within the interpretation of the law.
  11. Pic of the other side...sorry for not including this first go round. On an unrelated note, any tips for posting image in your profile? I'm able to successfully attach photos here, but everytime i try in my profile, keep getting an error....I'm sure it's user error....just trying to get something up there.....
  12. Sure Ray Ray....try to get something up tonight....this was after cleaning #3...will try to keep her looking good, but she'll be used, not stay in the safe.....
  13. Ordered before Christmas....used local FFL/gunsmith (yeah $15 transfer fee) and had to wait over a week for the delivery from Classic Pistol in PA to him...but alas my new Dan Wesson Valor is here. My first 1911, learned a lot from reading this board, which after reading from many of you convinced me to look for a S&W Pro Series 1911. After learning I'd have a better change of meeting Jesus than finding a dealer with the S&W in stock, was talking to some folks and fell for old, 'for just a little bit more you could buy....' argument. It worked. After 1st trip to Shoreshot this weekend (no pics, place was crazy and didn't want to do that to the staff or those waiting), and first 100 rounds through her without issue, I'm thrilled. I find I am more accurate with this than my Sig 226 - literally, the first 5 rounds at 25 feet (feet, not yards, not as good as some of you out there) out of the box were all low but on center. Adjust my site picture, and the next 10 rounds returned ot me a target that had one hole where the bullseye used to be. Had never done that with the 226, and certainly not on shots 6-16 in the life of the gun. It just feels like a really different gun, better made and great in the hand. 'She who makes the decisions,' who has had one enjoyable range trip with the sig, has pronounced after some hand holding that the Valor feels great in the hand. Amazed how tight this was, pulling it apart to clean/lube it before the trip to SS was a job....likely combined with my inexperience with the 1911 platform, but also the tightness of the parts. There is no play anywhere...after a good job cleaning and lubing up with the factory oil, off we went. I really like the Heine site setup, seemed easier for me to locate target with this vs the traditional 3 dot. Recoil felt almost on par with the 9mm sig. Amazed at the grips, how 'grippy' - I carry these 2 inside fabric pouches that go inside my Midway range bag, pulling this out of the pouch the first time.....rip....sounds like pulling apart 2 pieces of velcro with the fabric getting wrapped up in the grip...have to see if I can turn the pouch inside out to prevent that next time...Looking forward to return trip to SS in next few days to continue to break her in. Bought 2 extra Wilson Combat mags...had no issue with them or the 2 factory Check-Mate mags either. 100 rounds of 230 federal .45 ammo, no issues, no FTF, etc. Attached a poor photo. Tom
  14. Thanks for the replies...think I'll try the 8/8 setup and see how it goes....
  15. Don't forget the Sig 226 with an SRT - love mine in 9mm - you can also pick up a conversion kit for 22 to use on the same frame....
  16. Just passed the 2000 round mark in my Sig P226 Extreme I got before Thanksgiving. The factory night sites work alright in low light, but I'm having a difficult time with them in daylight - front site in particular hard to see for me. After research, seems the TFO's from Truglo offer the best of both world - but I'm getting conflicting information on what sizes to buy - Truglo website says both #8 and #6 front site will work - the current factory sites from Sig is #8 front site. Some resellers, offer conflicting information - Midway indicates I should get #8 front site on 226, Botach says #6. Read on Sigforum someone replaced his sig #8 with TFO #8 and it was too high..... I don't have any issues trying to correct high/low shooting, i just want to reproduce my current site picture, point of aim, etc with the TFO's - anyone here used them and have suggestion for what size? My sense is simply to replicate what I currently have, that is putting a #8 on the front and calling it a day;....but before I spend any $$ wanted to check and see what others have done. Thanks Tom
  17. I bought 2 cases at Natchez this weekend, 1 of Speer and 1 of Federal. It worked out a couple of bucks cheaper than Targetsport even though TS offered free shipping. Think I paid 9.49/box for 9mm and 15.99/box for .45 acp. Similar to other posters, you have to find what works for you. I haven't had any issue with WWB from Walmart in PA, but do notice that Remington tends to flame a bit more so I tend to stay away. Haven't had any issues with Federal or especially Speer - a buddy of mine is NJSP and they use Speer at their training ranges - figure if good enough for them, good enough for me.
  18. I hadn't heard PayPal doesn't support guns. Was looking at website for Classic Pistol indoor range and shop in PA. They seem to prefer you purchase your membership via PayPal....even indicating you get five bucks back for doing so. I use PP rarely but so far haven't had any issues.
  19. I took NRA basic pistol with them at ft Dix in oct and really enjoyed it. Where is the new range located?
  20. Did think about a 9mm...but given my 'collection' is so limited - only a .22LR and 9mm, I didn't want to duplicate calibers at this point. Down the line, if I continue to aquire, then I'd for sure be interested in one. Glad to hear that tony thinks it is worth the additional.
  21. Based on my previous forum post, you've all helped me decide route for next purchase is a 1911 (vs the Sig p220 I was considering). Given that I love my Sig p226, initially intended to 'stay in the family' and really like the look and feel of the 1911 Tacops. I've also had the chance to hold and play with the SW1911E. Am curious for those of you who might have either (or both??) what for you was the single factor that swayed you to make the purchase you did? Both of these guns feel great in my hand - and both reinforced that I need a full size grip, the carry/compact grips are really uncomfortable. , I like the look of both, in terms of reviews they both seem to be reliable. I'd expect to use this gun for HD, range and hopefully once I can find a club, potentially start participating in some of the weekend tournaments that I read about here. As a flyer, anyone with a SW1911Pro - is it worth the extra few hundred bucks to you instead of either of these? I find myself at the range once a week at a minimum with the p226, so suspect I'll continue to use this fairly frequently, at least as much as I can justify with the higher cost of .45 ammo. So she won't sit in a safe and come out only twice a year..... In terms of budget, purchasing any 1 of the 3 is an option with this last permit, but then "she who lays down the law" says that's enough.....for now..... Thanks
  22. Dicks across from Oxford Valley Mall. Guess she saw my driver's license when I opened my wallet to get ATM card. I've purchased ammo there before, including black friday when they even extended their sale that ended at 2pm since I arrived late and never been asked for FID before. Didn't think much of it, as I was actually there for other things, I'd pick up a few boxes of Remington since I was already there....
  23. About a month ago I bought the sig p226 extreme after lots of researching and renting. Most of the Sig 226 full size stuck me as same frame, just different bells/whistles. I wanted a version with fixed night sites and the SRT - 226 extreme was the only model to fit that bill. I don't see mention of SRT on the blackwater - if you can fire a 226 with and without that feature, I think you'll see a difference. Just my $0.02. Shop I ordered it had it in 4 days later from Sigarms - unfortunately ordered it prior to finding this forum...so I'm sure the affiliated shops here can do the same.
  24. Was in PA yesterday and stopped at Dick's and picked up a few boxes of the Remington 9mm on sale. I had to present my NJ FID to purchase! Was surprised when the cashier needed that - I asked her why, she said NJ requires it. I responded, I thought I was in PA....but didn't push it too far - ultimately had my FID with me and didn't want to create an issue, but was surprised to be asked for it. Anyone else have that experience?
