  1. I just read this article in the SL. I definitely don't like their anti-gun bias (and bias in general), but I was looking for info on a local crime. I don't know all of the politics involved among the pro-2A groups, although I know that not all play well with others. If this article is at all accurate, this is why nothing positive will ever happen for gun owners in NJ. Not because of the actual law-abiding owners, but because of the egos and childishness of some of the self-proclaimed pro-2A groups. http://www.nj.com/politics/index.ssf/2017/10/why_a_gun_rights_advocate_is_sad_guadagnos_giving.html#incart_2box_nj-homepage-featured
  2. @Mrs. Peel, it was great to meet you in person. I'm happy that you liked GFH, I love being a member. I'd be happy to bring you back any time you want to return. Sorry my full-size M&P9 added to your decision list. Despite the other SAs and revolvers that I own, it's still my go-to firearm. I'm usually an excellent shot with it on a consistent basis dating back to the first time i used it. However, now I know that I have to update my eyeglass prescription. Not being able to see/focus on the front site is a bit unsettling! The wonders of the aging eyes...
  3. I became interested in firearms on my own, no husband or boyfriend encouragement needed. Simply put, my husband died and I needed something active to do. My Dad had been an Army Ranger sharpshooter so I figured that I'd try it. Three years and five guns later, I'm still here. Personally, I think that the percentage of female shooters is increasing. I'm guessing that many are initially attracted for self-defense purposes. For me it's a combination of things: self-defense, sport, hobby, and activity. I enjoy my time at the range (GFH) and I see more and more women there every month. Most are there with a male, but at least women are there. Then again, most males are there with other males so that might not be gender-related. I think the times they are a changin'. Women seem to be more comfortable with firearms in general. Some women prefer an all-women's introductory class and others are fine with co-ed. I'm seeing less gender division, which is a good thing. Personally, I see no need to change anything with this site, I find it to be pretty female friendly.

    Peel has permits

Yet another opinion. I'm also a woman with small hands. I tried a lot of different handguns and my first purchase was a Smith and Wesson M&P 9mm (full size). It comes with three different sized backstraps (S, M, and L). For me, the grip is perfect using the S backstrap. Eventually I invested in an Apex trigger job, which greatly increased the overall comfort level. However, I've heard that the new 2nd generation M&Ps come with a much better trigger so that might not be an issue anymore. I feel minimal recoil, which had been a mental issue for me that isn't even a thought anymore. I have since purchased more handguns, including a couple of revolvers that I love. However, my M&P is my "go to" firearm and I shoot it the most accurately. Just another single-stack semi-auto option to throw in the mix. Let me know if you ever want to meet and try it out. BTW, I recently burned two P2Ps. I got three, used one, and nothing else really gave me that gotta have it feeling. It happens.
  5. And a copper bust of your 2nd member and raffle winner to present GFH trophy at the Meadowlands! pew pew
  6. I may not be tough enough to say with 100% conviction, "Only from my cold dead hands," but I sure as hell intend to exercise my current legal right to purchase NJ-legal firearms and 15-round magazines with all the proper paperwork in hand. If the time comes when the NJ law changes, I'll deal with it then. I honestly don't understand conceding defeat in a fight that hasn't even officially started. With that attitude the NJ legislators don't have to do a thing to further curtail the law, we'll do it to ourselves!
  7. Sorry to hear that. Make sure you check your mail carefully when they mail it again. The envelope is really small and I almost tossed mine with some junk mail. I thought it was one of those small inserts from a magazine.
  8. I also use SimpliSafe. You buy the equipment up front and it's yours to keep. It's DIY set-up, which I found to be quite easy. Payment options arw $0/month for no monitoring, just a really loud alarm; $15/month for 24/7 monitoring (they use C.O.P.S Monitoring Service); and $25/month that adds a full Internet interface (I can set alarm, change alarm, monitor status, etc., from my cell phone). I use the $25/month service. I've found them to be very responsive and I like the features. As stated before, you do need to have strong and reliable cell service for the system to work (it's a wireless system). They use T-Mobile as their default cellular carrier, but I called and requested a Verizon module and it works much better for me in my location. It doesn't have to be the same carrier as your cell phone.
  9. Fair Lawn has definitely improved its procedures. No more trying to get an appointment with a detective just to get the application (which included additional forms). Then making another appointment to return the completed application. Went to the municipal building and picked up the full packet from a nice woman at the police department. I completed the forms, all of them legal, and had my references complete their forms. I also had to do something online that cost $20---I believe it got the background check moving. Dropped everything back at the police station and within 2 weeks or so I had my three P2Ps! Fair Lawn has definitely improved their system. It was professional, friendly, and prompt. I was very impressed.
  10. I'm happy to report that my NH non-resident "Pistol/Revolver License" arrived today, a week earlier than I expected. Like Darrenf, issue date is 2/28/2017, but my expiration date is 3/31/2022. Not sure why, but I can't complain. I know that this may be a paranoid question, but no where on the license does it say "concealed carry." This can be used in PA (among other states) for CCW, correct?
  11. TR20, thanks for the update and congratulations on getting your permit. This gives me a window for when to start checking through my mail a lot more carefully.
  12. Thanks, TR20. I just checked my bank account and like magic, it showed that my check cleared today (happy birthday to me)! Now I guess it's waiting a couple of weeks for the permit. Looks like I'm about a week behind you and darrenf.
  13. I mailed my application and check on 1/14. My check still hasn't been cashed, which has me a little concerned.
  14. I mailed my application the day after you, 1/14/2017, and my check hasn't been cashed yet. Hopefully it will happen this week. Keeping my fingers crossed!
  15. First, I would like to apologize for certain parts of my earlier posts. I should not have painted NJGF with a wide brush---people vary online just as they do in "real life." I have a lot of respect for many members, some of whom I am proud to call friends. +1 for using a laptop backpack as a range bag. Some of the newer backpacks are made of very lightweight materials, which sounds good, but the bag tends to sag if you're carrying ammo. The "old fashioned" laptop backpacks seem to work best, at least IMHO.
  16. You missed my whole point. I don't give a rat's ass about avatars. I expect disagreements. Political discussion is great in the proper forum. It's small-minded "my opinion is the only right opinion" posters who amused me to the point of embarrassment. When I want intelligent discussion I turn to people who I respect. Is there enough good here? Probably. Unfortunately, the good often gets lost and buried under ongoing prattle. What would make NJGF more interesting to me (and probably many others)? Less childlike behavior would be a good start. But that's just my opinion, which means very little because as before, I'm out of here. I don't have the time, patience, or desire to read through the drivel to find the good posts.
  17. Okay, here is the voice of another female shooter who used to be involved here. Believe me, I'm not thin-skinned and I don't get insulted easily. I've been through enough life-crap in the last 2 years that would have broken a lot of men. It's this type of attitude that makes me laugh---no, the women who Sandy referred to (I'm one of them) really do NOT want to discuss shoes whether or not they're related to firearms. I'm not insulted by this ridiculous statement, it just lowers my respect for the character of NJGF, which is what made me lose interest. Feel free to return to your debates regarding conservative vs liberal, men vs women, democrats vs republicans, etc.
  18. No matter what revolver you choose, if it's a relatively new model make sure that you check that the barrel is properly aligned with the rest of the gun before you take possession and burn a permit. I bought a brand-new S&W 67 and only after taking possession did I notice that the barrel was canted/clocked to the left. After a trip back to S&W (under warranty) the revolver came back with minimal improvement. From what I have read this is not a unique problem with newer revolvers, particularly S&W. In fact, a friend checked her new S&W revolver after I discovered the problem and her barrel is also canted to the left. Hers is more subtle, but it's there. Subsequently, I bought a used S&W model 19-3 in fantastic condition and haven't looked back. I think a good used revolver is a great option. Just my personal experience and opinion.
  19. I'm a woman with small hands and I shoot the full-size M&P9 using the small back-strap. It fits my hands perfectly and my finger reaches the trigger at exactly the correct position. It was my very first gun and the first gun I ever shot---I was afraid of the recoil and barrel "flipping" before I took the first shot. I saw how easy the gun was to handle after just a couple of shots and I've never looked back, recoil isn't even an issue for me at this point. I'm a member at the Woodland Park Range, which is right off the McBride Avenue exit on Route 46 and is very close to Clifton. If you ever want to shoot my M&P9, just let me know and I'd be happy to meet you there. Good luck in your search.
  20. Had mine laminated at Office Depot. It makes the card a little larger, but the FID is all ready bigger than a standard card (like a driver's license).
