  1. The flat tire wouldn't have been proof enuff? Wow, tuff Dad!
  2. You make a good point, and since it's a private(?) business venture, they have the right to set rules, and are not violating our rights in doing so. So, if they were to try to set up rules for THEIR OWN BUSINESS to try to reduce the odds f this happening, I'm fine with it. I'm very much in favor of reducing gun deaths of all kinds, just like many Democrats (and Republicans), I just don't think we ought to restrict the rights of people in America to do it.
  3. Wow, that's impressive. I bet the cold was a motivator! Really that is pretty damn good.
  4. Durnit, sorry I missed ya! Didn't get back to this thread soon enough, but if that pic is you, I guess I didn't miss too much. Or, rather, I missed far more than I'd have liked to, thank goodness!
  5. Your kids are lucky!! You will be proud of them for being even just a little more self-sufficient than some others. My son learned tire changes and stuff by around 13-14, but he didn't bother wit his permit till he was 20, due to college and extra curricular demands. He realized the benefits of the know-how even if he never ended up needing it. (BTW, I bought him membership in AAA regardless, for peace of mind for his parents. Not everything can be fixed on the side of the road.)
  6. Stop renting guns, stop renting cars, stop letting people drive over bridges. They will come up with another way to end their lives if that is what they want to do. Make people get a permit to buy Drano, or knives or any rope with a test weight of 12 pounds or more, and pass a law that says they are not allowed to twist 2 or 3 ropes together, as that would be enough to support their weight to hang themselves. Make it a law to no longer have bathtubs filled more than 2 1/2 inches, and eliminate all outlets in bathrooms of homes with toasters in them. I could come up with more laws, but I will let someone else chime in. What am I, a durn Democrat?
  7. maintenanceguy Man oh man, you really said a lot of what I tried to say in much more detail, thanks. I suspect you are a far better typist than I am, and/or have a much better keyboard. It would have taken me 30 minutes or more to get all that down in "print"!! And your church story is a prime example.
  8. Well said, that makes it easier to get your point. The uninformed make too many assumptions sometimes. And THAT was my point in the first place. Like you, I try to point out the difference to people, and it often means the difference between me getting the work or not. Most of the folks I work for know that the skills are what's needed, and the ethics of a conscientious contractor, more than the paperwork. I'm not quite broke, but I ain't no Hovnanian, either!
  9. That's a shame, he knows not what he's missing. Guess he NEVER goes anywhere that his smart phone doesn't reach a signal, nor too far from the AAA stations. And doesn't believe there will ever be a time when he has to be a little self sufficient. I feel for you.
  10. You got that right! I'm getting fast to the point where I just don't wanna keep going up and down a ladder to pop windows in or siding on, so I'm scaling back to smaller jobs myself, or I'd have offered up my own name. Another guy near me is 79, and still putting in 5 or 6 hour days, I'm kinda jealous of him. Not enough younger folks are interested in getting their hands dirty these days, too bad. When SHTF starts, they'll regret it. My boy, on the other hand, listens and pays attention, YAY!!
  11. That Law Tactic is cool, and looks well made!
  12. License, registration, it makes little difference to those who are looking for a competent worker. You make my point just the same. The rest of your post makes terrific sense. I suspect YOU might be one of the good ones.
  13. This statement alone should be made into a "sticky" for all the names you posted of good workers!!
  14. Charleslee: There can be some confusion in the phrase "replace windows" with some taking it to mean "replacement" windows and others thinking of "replacing windows with new ones" meaning the entire window rather than just the sashes(movable parts). Big difference in cost and labor. If you want to replace the sashes and keep the frames, the Anderson Replacement ain't bad for product quality, but Anderson gets a real premium for it's name, paid to the base company and the installers. Yes, it's backed by a big name, no doubt, and I've used Anderson more than most other companies myself for new and replacement installations, just not their program. But it's a pricy option. Marvin also makes a very good replacement product for the sashes, with it's own well insulated side tracks, called Tilt-Pac. Another wood based product, like the Anderson prime window, it's well made and has great options. As to real "replacement windows" of the Vinyl type, check into Simonton brand, it's one of the best out there, and has been around a long long time. Lots of optional choices in size and type and finish. Certainteed isn't bad either, if you stick to their upper graded choices. Think twice about using big box stores, oftentime the installers for them ONLY work for them because they don't have enough work on their own, They are paid less, and often rush thru the work to make the days pay, usually piece work. And remember, most of those outfit insist on full payment for labor AND material up front. Reputable recommendations have always said make payments during the job, with something held back till the final dab of paint or caulk is on. I have even seen building permits with a restriction on this final payment requiring final inspection before that payment. Oneshot makes a good point about posting a decent pic being a help to those of us in the know. We could steer you in the right direction IF you weren't sure of the best choice in your case. BTW, if you are at all handy, replacement widows are well within the ability of someone who has a modest skillset and patience to RTFM. You don't even need much in the way of tools, and you can work at a pace that won't ever leave a hole in your house overnight.
  15. Yeah, but look how many other pieces of legislation they are trying to push though that are also nonsense? They just call it by that other name, gunsense.
  16. "All 4 were/are licensed and insured "professionals". " Do you by chance happen to know what's required to be a licensed professional carpenter/remodeler? You fill out a few forms and send 2 checks, one to the state, and one to your chosen insurance co. There, you are now a licensed pro. Aside from your wife's connected friend, you don't mention where you got the names of who you used. It's too bad he wasn't more dependable, or a slightly more sober individual. He's the closest to the recommended source for such things, a reference by someone who's used a good man/company. Licensing of regular carpenters, as opposed to electricians or plumbers, is relatively new to Jerksey, in the last 14 or so years, and it has NONE of the testing the other two fields have. An electrician has to prove his knowledge base, and maintain it. Same for a licensed plumber. I have been swinging a hammer for better than 50 years, having learned from 2 generations of woodworking/contracting family members When the state said we had to get licensed, but there would be no confirmation of competence, I opted out. No point in it, as it doesn't differentiate me from the guy who just decides he wants to get you to hire him based on being a "licensed professional". I'm sorry you had poor experiences, and hope you can find in your circle of friends or groups such as this, someone to work with better in the future. There's oodles of rules about hiring someone good, like not paying too much up front, checking references, and so on, I'm sure you have seen at least some of them. Best is to get a name from a friend and SEE THEIR WORK. And ask the friend if they drank the booze or worked a 3 hour day or cheaped out on 1/4 plywood doors. I'm surprised you didn't mention them warping in the heat of the attic. Good luck. p.s. Those steps must really be a nightmare, that guy really ripped you off.
  17. Long perhaps, but well worth it, thanks, it was new to me. Really something to think about,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
  18. That's the first time I have seen that, silly me. Thanks, it was great!
  19. Wow! I don't know now if I'm a psychic or just a psychO! I amaze myself sometimes! Thanks for sharing that, it actually sorta makes sense.
  20. If it'll make ya feel better, I'll invite ya to mah backyard grill one weekend, and give ya a quadruple burger, okie dokie?
  21. How about GIVING guns to the RULY black people in Paterson, wouldn't that work just as well? (wish there was a smiley extreme sarcasm icon)
  22. See above! Heck, I watched it too, so,,,,,,,,can't knock him for it, right?
  23. If he's just fooling around, sure, if he gets the hits, why not? That Russian(?) guy seems to be more or less goofing too.
