The end of airport firearms transport?
Mr.Stu replied to SJG's topic in Current New Jersey Gun Laws Discussion
It depends on the reason for the stop. If he's looking to hook you up with a gun charge because you were waving it about as you drove along, I'd agree with you. However, the vast majority of stops are for moving violations and the cop has no reason to suspect there is a firearm on board until you tell him by saying I just came from x range. -
What gun to teach my girlfriend to shoot on?
Mr.Stu replied to Kaiser7's topic in Firearm Hobby / Sport Discussion
One of the best guns to learn on is a spring powered air rifle. Here's the reason: The gun operates by releasing a compressed spring which pushes a piston which compresses the air which pushes the pellet. There is alot of movement before the pellet starts its journey down the barrel. If she can master the trigger control and follow-through to shoot this accurately she'll be able to shoot just about anything. Also pellets are really cheap, and you can build a backstop for your back yard or basement fairly easily so there's much more opportunity for practice. Sent from my SCH-I800 using Tapatalk 2 -
My Rant of the day on mag limits bill A2006/S993
Mr.Stu replied to Howard's topic in Pending Legislation Discussion
This 13th bullet thing is stupid. If he only had 10 round mags it would have been the 2nd bullet from the 2nd mag. If we had a 2 round limit it would have been the 2nd bullet from the 6th mag. This of couse assumes he would have paid attention to that law, even though he was happy to disregard the laws about stealing firearms, under 21's possessing pistols, taking firearms onto school property, let alone murdering people. -
The end of airport firearms transport?
Mr.Stu replied to SJG's topic in Current New Jersey Gun Laws Discussion
I have yet to be pulled over while transporting, but my answer to the "where have you come from?" or "where are you heading?" questions is the relevant town. It is truthful but does not lead to a question about whether guns are on board. Sent from my SCH-I800 using Tapatalk 2 -
Weapon light holsters that work without the light
Mr.Stu replied to boo's topic in Optics & Accessories
HE, I see your points and they make sense if you are entering a known hostile environment in your capacity as a swat team member. On the other hand, I'm just a regular guy who is more likely to be reacting to a bump in the night which could just as easily have been caused by one of my daughters as an intruder. I am not willing to risk my daughters. I train to use a handheld light and I can still shoot pretty well with it. Sent from my SCH-I800 using Tapatalk 2 -
Weapon light holsters that work without the light
Mr.Stu replied to boo's topic in Optics & Accessories
I'm curious why you ask the question. My opinion is that weapon mounted lights are a "not good thing" - they influence you to sweep the muzzle across something you have yet to decide you are willing to destroy (having not seen it yet). A hand held light allows you to look without endangering the place you are looking and if you use a "cigar hold" there is minimal compromise on your ability to control the gun as soon as you re-assert a two-hand grip. Each to their own though, Stu. -
My Rant of the day on mag limits bill A2006/S993
Mr.Stu replied to Howard's topic in Pending Legislation Discussion
The most effective means of communication is a hand written letter (legible of course) mailed by the good old USPS. Phone calls and email only exist in the ether - a letter is tangible and cannot be ignored. I was taught this lesson by my father who worked for local goverrnment on the UK. Phoned in complaints were, only at the very best counted, never logged and never acted upon. -
Also, some won't do it after it has expired but will before. In my town I have always been told when I pick them up to just bring them in if I need an extension. I like my town.

A slide that doesn't lock back could get you killed!
Mr.Stu replied to Old Glock guy's topic in Handguns
A press check is when you pull the slide back part way and check that you see a round in the chamber. You do not pull the slide far enough to eject the round, nor can you tell if it is a live round or a spent case. Always make sure you press the slide fully forward after as three recoil spring may not have enough stored energy to return the slide to battery because it was not fully compressed. Mr.Stu replied to Old Glock guy's topic in Handguns
What did the instructor say? In that situation I think a quick tap-rack would put you back in the game much faster than retreating back out of the room, racking and re-entering. Obviously, not having an empty chamber would have been preferable, but giving the bad guys a heads-up that you'll be coming from that direction as soon as you've corrected your problem seems like you're giving them the initiative. If it had been a simple mis-fire would you have retreated? I'm not trying to be critical, just wondering about your perspective and whether there was any discussion afterwards. Stu. -

I think out is good that they are trotting out the same wishy-washy point of view. It only strengthens our position. Sent from my SCH-I800 using Tapatalk 2 -

Challenge with Fiber Optic Sights - POA/POI
Mr.Stu replied to Silphidae's topic in Optics & Accessories
I can't say for certain as I don't make them, but as the FO needs ambient light to work I guess they need it high up in the sight so they can expose the fiber. With Tritium there is no need for the ambient light and more need to protect the phial so it it mounted lower down. Maybe. Possibly. Shrug. -
They don't know what CCW is in Trenton - unbelievable

I doubt it, but may have got a laugh from the peanut gallery. Sent from my SCH-I800 using Tapatalk 2 -

I think the appropriate response should have been "if you have so little knowledge of firearms you should remove yourself from these proceedings as you are clearly unable to make a contribution of any value" Sent from my SCH-I800 using Tapatalk 2 -
Challenge with Fiber Optic Sights - POA/POI
Mr.Stu replied to Silphidae's topic in Optics & Accessories
First off, I love your visual aids. The way I use them, the FO is for fast sight acquisition. If the target is close (less than 10 yards for a body shot out less than 7 for a head) I just put the FO on target and fire.when I need to hit more accurately than that the FO just helps find the sight - I use the outline to make the sight picture - the dot might just as well not be there any more. +1 on the lee classic turret. You will soon get tired of a single stage if you plan to do any reasonable quantity. Sent from my SCH-I800 using Tapatalk 2
-
You will need to use a crimp die to at least remove the flare put on the case mouth otherwise you'll most likely have feeding issues. A little crimp goes a long way to prevent bullet set-back too. Sent from my SCH-I800 using Tapatalk 2

Tonight is practice for SCFGPA members only - no match. Come along - its a great place to start. The match will be on Sunday.
-
That is one of the reasons for SCFGPA members' practice night. It is a supervised environment where people can learn the correct way to safely run their gun at a match. Joe, you are more than welcome, indeed encouraged, to come to the range tonight. I'm the British guy - you won't be able to miss me - we'll get you set up with Tom and you'll be just fine.
-
If you have never shot IDPA before, Tom will give you a thorough briefing which will hopefully help shift the cluelessness.
-
What about it? If you want to use a non-IDPA division compliant gun there should be no problem. Our Match Director, Tom has said its OK so long as you run it by him first. Also, it has to be a caliber allowed at the range, suitable for our backstop. e.g. no magnum, no rifle calibers, etc.
