  1. I'd rather see a republican buffoon in office than a democrat buffoon. You cant always get what you want, but sometimes you get what you need....or something like that.
  2. Yesterday, I did my own research on the 74 school shootings and I'm glad some of the media is picking up on the fact that Everytown really stretched the truth. In some cases I could not find a news story, or any other information, associated with some of the events published on their website. In other cases the shooting took place in close proximity to a school but did not involve any students or school staff. One example of the school shootings was actually a gang violence issue that precipitated from a confrontation over a weekend and carried over to the following Monday where a student (gang member) was shot and injured by another gang member as he exited the school. Some of the stories about the shootings were legit, and that was troubling. Equally disturbing is that our government is not doing anything to addresst the root cause of gun violence. Gangs, drugs, illegal immigration, joblessness, these and many other factors are all related but the govt will not do anything about it because doing so would likely offend the voters. EDIT: Even though CNN is calling Everytown out on the figure, they are also stretching the truth a bit. In the below quoted text from CNN's site, you will see that the incident began at a residence and ultimately ended at a college campus. The suspect had no intention of this being a school shooting, it just happened to end up that way. If the cops had not chased the suspect, it's unlikely the suspect would have driven to the campus.
  3. I've listened to many 911 recordings from people in SD situations.. Do what you feel you need to do seems to be the usual answer. I believe, as a matter of policy, 911 operators cannot give specific instructions regarding SD. I've never heard an operator say shoot the attacker, nor have I heard them say don't shoot. The main purpose of a 911 operators existence is to gather information and contact the appropriate authorities. In this particular scenario all the operator needs to know is that someone is being mauled by a dog, the location and that immediate medical attention will be required. End of conversation. By dropping the phone while the connection is still live, it gives the operator a beacon, so to speak. In any event, using a firearm should always be the last resort. If you happen to have a bat or golf club right next to you, grab it as your first choice. If all you have is a firearm, grab it since it is your nearest best option. If you have a bat in the garage behind the x-mass decorations and you have a gun right next to you, well, it's not difficult to figure out what to do. Is a gun the best choice, well the answer to that is; It depends. The story about the kid that was shot in the ass while being rescued from a mauling. Lets say the guy didn't have a gun. What would have happened then? Would the kid have been killed by the dog, would the dog break off the attack and run away? It's hard to tell. All one can do is assess the situation and make a decision on how to act without hesitation. A bad decision is better than no decision at all. There are no "perfect" decisions, just decisions that may or may not work out better than some other course of action. You cannot predict the outcome either way with 100% certainty.
  4. How much time does it take to call 911 on your way out the door and say, we need an ambulance NOW at (address) and then drop the phone? The five to ten minutes head start the ambulance has means the victim will be receiving treatment that much sooner. I do not think anyone here suggested not intervening in some fashion, it seemed pretty unanimous that some method, whether it be manly man hand to pitbull combat or baseball bat or firearm should be used . It will do little good to have stopped the attack just to watch the victim bleed out while you run for a phone, that is if you have not become the second victim.
  5. If it's still at the FFL, unopened, you can refuse to accept it, have it shipped back and take your losses.
  6. AFAIK a FID is only required for pistol caliber ammo. No FID necessary for rifle or shotgun ammo Did you happen to notice if they had CCI Stingers?.
  7. Back in the day (when nearly all guns were still made of just wood and steel) I never had any trouble taking waterfowl with my trusty rugged $260.00 Remington 870 Express. But shooting skeet was a lot more enjoyable with my friends $3,000.00 Browning O/U. I don't know if I'd take that browning out on a hunt though, it was too pretty. Just like anything else, at some point you are paying for prestige instead of utility.
  8. Grab your gun, grab the phone, dial 911 on your way to dispatch the dog.
  9. My roof (pitch and flat) needs to be overhauled. Everything has to come off the pitch roof, two and a half courses of asphalt and original cedar shake currently used as sub-roof and new sheathing installed. Also, flat roof (approx 800sq ft.) needs to be renovated. There is more flat roof than pitch on my house. The flat roof has been leaking on and off for several years and there's a good possibility some structural amendments will need to be made. Gutters and leaders also need some work. If you are a roofer or know a reputable one in Monmouth Co. please PM me with contact info. I will be looking for estimates over the next two weeks but the project does not have to start until September..
  10. I may instal a Linear comp at some point in the future but for now the TP is all I need.
  11. This is the one I'm installing. http://www.brownells.com/userdocs/products/p_296000104_1.jpg
  12. Hey guys, I appreciate the input on how to secure the thread protector but the question I need answered is about alignment with the crown. The best answer I got so far is to mount the TP flush with the crown and use a washer to fill in the gap between the barrel shoulder and the back end of the TP. If anyone has a better answer than this let me know.
  13. With the TP screwed on tight without a washer, the crown protrudes by about 1/32 of an inch. In other words, the TP would be recessed and the crown unprotected. With a crush washer, the TP will likely stick out beyond the crown, probably by 1/32 to 1/16 of an inch. If the TP is screwed on, without a any type of washer, so that it's flush with the crown, there will be a 1/32 inch gap between the ass end of the TP and the barrel shoulder. In this instance I would use a paper thin washer to fill the gap. We are going to drill the TP and barrel in one step with a tapered bit, drive in the pin and weld the pin in place. I may even use a very tiny drop of LocTite on the threads for good measure. I know loctite is not BATF approved, it will be used only to prevent any vibration so the barrel harmonics remain stable.
  14. The person doing the weld is an expert welder, not an expert gunsmith.
  15. I'm about to have my thread protector permanently attached, pinned and welded, but have a question before it's attachment becomes irreversible. Should the TP protrude beyond the crown or should I screw it on all the way, and should I still use a crush washer even though it will be pinned and welded?
  16. How far into the neck have you drilled thus far? If you made it to a certain point but can't go any further it's possible that one of the hardened bits snapped off inside the hole and now you are trying to drill through the fragment. If this is the case it presents two problems, the first being the fragment is hard as hell and the second being the broken piece is spinning as you try to drill through it.
  17. Well, the job security is better, I have more free time in the day to go to the range and my wife, she helps out sometimes, has yet to file a complaint for sexual harassment. I do miss the adrenaline rush of getting mission critical equipment up and running again. I was very good at that. When shit broke, I got it up and running fast.
  18. NJ used to be America's technology R&D heartland. Ft.Monmouth supported many many tech companies small and large. From the first commercially viable light bulb, the transistor and flat screen technology, all the R&D was done right here in NJ. Sadly, the corporations have either been disbanded by the government or fled south to a more corporate friendly environment. Sure you can still find tech jobs but there are no more 15 minute commutes, no gold watch, and you have to be your own boss. You also have to be able to hit the ground running. 30 years ago large corporations were okay with taking up to a month to get new hires up to speed if they had the basic skills and just needed to fill in the specialized skills required to do a job. In short, there is no low hanging fruit anymore, you need a big ladder to pick what's left all the way at the top of the tree. FWIW, I worked for bell Labs, when that went away I was a technical recruiter for a while, then an IT/Network tech, then a self employed IT/Net Tech. Now I own a cleaning company and mop floors.
  19. Man, when I think now that I used to march through the streets of Pine Beach with a 1903 Springfield. They were demilled drill rifles though. Imagine doing that today, we'd have a SWAT team on us like white on rice. Technically speaking, I believe NJ is an open carry state for long guns, or at least it was when I was still hunting 20 years ago. . In real life though, I would not recommend it.
  20. I don't think I'd go as far as saying he is a hero, but I will agree that he is a patriot. His intentions were well meaning and, unlike Manning's wikileaks recklessness, Snowden only disclosed the bare minimum to get the point across. Maybe I'm cynical but for all we know Snowden is a double secret squirrel agent and is actually working with some covert government agency. There are plenty of them too. There was a time when virtually nobody knew that the NSA , NRO and a bunch of other agencies even existed. Whatever the case may be, the fact remains, our government is overstepping it's constitutional authority. Government corruption is at an all time high and the wrongdoings are hidden behind a very high tech curtain of secrecy. All Snowen did was open the blinds a little bit and gave us a peek.
  21. Does it really matter what one puts on ground up lips and assholes encased in intestines?
  22. Usually just ketchup for me, the wife likes Jack Daniels mustard. Onions, thinly sliced and sauteed in butter till they are almost mushy. Mmmmm. If you want to try a real treat, wrap your dogs in bacon and bake them at 325 until the bacon is just about to get crispy. It may stop your heart but it's totally worth it.
  23. The bottom line is get him what will make him smile. I suggested bags because, as a practical matter, that's all he needs off of a bench and it will give him the best accuracy with the least amount of moving parts. If he likes bipods then get him a good one, like the Harris others have recommended or an Atlas. As far as mall ninjas go, they use the cheap made in china stuff (UTG NcStar), more frustrating than helpful and there mostly for looks.. Seeing as how your pop is a Nam vet, he's not likely to fall in the mall ninja category so purchase accordingly.
  24. If your dad is shooting a light machine gun, then by all means get one for him. Otherwise bags are all he needs. Unless your dad is a mall ninja, then he'd definitely appreciate it.
