  1. I'm going with the Phase5 on my next build simply because I like that it's one piece and doesn't screw onto the existing bolt release .
  2. ??? How did this thread become entirely about 80% lowers??? Jiujiujiu, You are correct. The only thing you need to buy from a dealer is the stripped lower. Everything else for the rifle can be purchased online and shipped to your door. Building is not difficult but will require a few specialized tools to assemble the upper. (If you have a threaded barrel you'll need to get your comp pinned as well.) You could also buy a "complete upper". There are a number of manufacturers that allow you to design your own upper, then they build and test fire it before shipping it out to you.
  3. Ruger makes a pretty nice series 70 1911 too. They're well made and mine is pretty accurate.
  4. I have a couple Kimbers, including a Custom Target II and a TLE/RL II. I have no complaints at all, they're great guns. I wouldn't be too concerned with a few failures from a rental gun. My Target model probably has about 6000 rounds through it. The TLE/RL I haven't had very long, maybe 1000 rounds so far. Both have been flawless for me though. If you're into Sig, they make some nice 1911s as well. I recently picked up a Sig Nightmare off a forum member here and it's a very nice looking, well built pistol.
  5. If you want a .22 I would suggest a Ruger 22/45. Extremely accurate and has the same grip as your 1911. Makes for a great trainer. For 9mm my choice would be a CZ75b or CZ85 combat. (Or 1911 in 9mm.)
  6. I should have said "pre-worn". You are correct, accidents do happen. They are, however, almost always preventable. I like the worn look too though. A 1911 carried by a soldier has "character". It should look worn, it's been through a war. My target pistol, trap gun, or AR that has never been fired in self defence should not. Just my opinion. I have had similar conversations with my wife regarding vehicles. She gets dings and scratches all over her car after a few years and chalks it up to "wear and tear". Apparently it's unavoidable, or so she says. Funny thing is, when I look at my 12 year old truck with four times as many miles I don't see any of the damage she incurred.
  7. I only shoot standard pistol matches. Different kind of stress. I don't hunt either but, dropping a gun from a rifle stand or off an ATV? Definitely preventable. And I'd be pissed. (BTW, all this dropping of guns you mention doesn't sound very safe.) Ever roof a house? Do you drop your nail gun over the edge? Sure, it happens but it's almost always because some one was careless. I have friends who shoot far less then I do and their guns look like shit. (In my opinion, others would probably say they're fine) It has nothing to do with use. They're simply careless when they handle them. I certainly wouldn't "ball my eyes out" if I dropped a gun but I'd be annoyed. In general I just tend to take better care of my possessions than most. As far as your "pre-damaged" guns, that's a little different. I have old rifles that have plenty of wear. It doesn't bother me but I don't add to it either.
  8. Yes, it bothers me. Most damage is from mishandling. Unless we're talking about holster wear, there's really no reason, in my mind, for a gun to be banged up. I have some 1911s with many thousands of rounds through them that could still pass for new. Admittedly, I'm a bit anal but, to me, use is still no excuse for damage. I know some state that "they're just tools" but, I take care of my tools too, and my truck, and my house. I also still have my first BMX bike that I raced and my first car that I got when I was 16. So yeah, if I drop $1200 on a nice pistol I'll be pissed if it gets all banged up. No reason I can't shoot the crap out of it and still pass down a near perfect gun to my kids.
  9. But a CT permit should be easy to obtain. You just need a permit from ANY other state.
  10. Honing your skills at 25 yards will make you a better shooter at 7-10 yards. It makes it much easier to see what you have to work on. At 7 yards hopefully you just have one hole. Yes, like I said, it's a Bullseye club. Bullseye is shot from 25 yards in 5 shot strings. It definitely has its limitations but, if you shoot Bullseye it's sufficient. Also can't beat the convenience. It's close enough that I can run over after dinner for a few hours and still be home by 8:00. Or hit it on a Sat morning and be back before the wifey notices I'm gone. [emoji6]
  11. Nope. It's a Bullseye club. We have a winter .22 league that competes once a week, center fire 900 matches once a month, and NRA Standard Pistol matches a few times a year. There's also a Junior Rifle Team that competes and goes to Camp Perry every year. They have a Senior Rifle Team as well but I'm not sure how active they are. It's a great place to go during the winter or on a rainy day to kill some time. Let me know if you want to check it out some Sunday.
  12. Yes, .22 rifle is ok. No other rifles or even pistol caliber carbines are allowed.
  13. Woodbridge is very good with their timeline when issuing.. Connie(?) at the permit depart is great to deal with. Heritage is the closest shop. Their prices aren't the best but they are convenient and have a good selection. Middle Brook Firearms and Garden State Armory aren't too far away either. Shhhh..... quit hyping it up. It's just 2 lanes and you can only shoot between 2:00 and 4:30 on Mondays.
  14. I live in Woodbridge, not a fan of Bullseye. Been there numerous times. Never a good experience. I would recommend Middle Brook Firearms in Green BrooK or Garden State Armory in Watchung. Both are relatively new shops but the guys are great to deal with. (Middle Brook owner is actually a former partner of GSA.)
  15. And........ that's why I don't go to public ranges. While neither girl muzzle swept anyone, they clearly didn't have complete control of their weapon. We're all aware of the Fla incident and how quickly things can go south. Notice the little girl who stepped into the frame half way through? If that were my kid I would have been out of there. I agree with most who felt the guy is inexperienced as well. Bad combination. I recently introduced a new shooter to the sport. She is about 5'3" and weighs maybe 110?. ( She's very petite). She had never held a gun before. I started her out with a .22 rifle, then a .22 pistol. Once she was comfortable we progressed on up through the calibers. By the time she got to a .45 she was pretty confident and knew what to expect. .45s were target loads, so pretty mild. She didn't like the .40. took one shot and put the gun down. (Glock 23) I also did this at a private club during the week when no one else was around. But even if we weren't, she was completely safe (and under my guidance the entire time.)
  16. I go to all their stores. Rahway shop is 5 minutes from home, Branchburg is 5 from work (sometimes go there for lunch), and I shoot at EFAG once in a while and stop at their Easton store. There are a few guys at the Rahway store that are good and a couple (maybe just one) dousche. Their prices do tend to be a little high but typically it's a wash when you factor in gas and time to travel elsewhere. I can pick up a gun from Rahway, hit my club in Carteret to test it out, and be home in an hour and a half.
  17. Yep, it was just a run down local theatre when I was there way back when. Much like the Brook Theatre in Bound Brook was. I was just pointing out that they were doing movies and dinner long before these "Fork and Screen" theatres popped up.
  18. I've gotten a couple of good deals off Armslist. The scammers are usually easy to pick out. I would never buy a used gun based on pics alone anyway, so F2F is mandatory for me.
  19. Here's mine: Ruger SR1911, Kimber Custom Target II, RIA compact, Kimber Custom TLE/RL, and a Sig Nightmare.
  20. I grew up a few towns away. they have been doing the movie and dinner thing for a long time now. I think I was last there about 25 years ago. (Before Zupko bought it.)
  21. So, if I'm reading this right, he reached behind his back WITH THE GUN IN HIS HAND AND PULLED THE TRIGGER by accident. This guy sounds like a tragedy waiting to happen. I feel for the family but, at least he didn't kill some one else's kid in next lane. I think most people (who shoot) have experienced hot brass down the shirt. I've seen women catch brass in their cleavage and calmly put their gun down and fish it out. The fact that he reached behind his back with the gun in his hand tells me that he is probably not the safest shooter in the first place. Had he not discharged his weapon he probably wouldn't have even given his actions a second thought. Honestly, with all the dumb/unsafe shit I've seen at ranges and on youtube, I'm surprised these things don't happen more. Sent from my KFTT using Tapatalk
  22. I'd like to get it trap and clay shooting. Looks like a lot of fun. Plus it's an excuse to buy another gun. Current you my only 12g is a coach gun.
  23. I was looking for a little carry gun a while back but wasn't crazy about the .380. I ended up finding a Kimber Solo in 9mm. It fits in my back pocket.
