almiz111 26 Posted December 24, 2010 OK so if you don't know it what have you heard? Let me start here. NOT interested in classic battle rifles eg, Garrand, M1A, etc. with iron sights, small mags and more. They are beautifull but NOT interested. Am interested in something more modern in 308, like the FNAR. AR10 seems to have a bad rep. C'mon let the opinions flow. Any specifics would be great - spare parts, reliability and that stuff. lunker 274 Posted December 24, 2010 PTR 91 Excellent, well made clone of HK91. Chambered in .308. I have the PTR32 in 7.62x39. It is a great gun. http://www.ptr91.com/
Shane45 807 Posted December 24, 2010 Not sure what bad rap your refering to in the AR10, it is probably the most developed big bore semiauto platform. Im also not sure Id call an FNAR modern. Its a browning BAR. At any rate, I have heard they are accurate but mag's are expensive.
vjf915 456 Posted December 24, 2010 I think this thread and its responses would REALLY benefit from you explaining what your intended purpose for this rifle is, and what you budget is. Then some people here can make suggestions for you.

Maybe the word is modular as opposed to modern. almiz

Then some people here can make suggestions for you. Another fair question. Let me start with this - gun buying seems to be much more about want than need. So I want to sharpen my skill beyond 200 yards and punch holes in paper. Could even possibly compete. I'm not really expecting the revolution. Price max $1500. Thanks, almiz
JohnKimble 4 Posted December 26, 2010 Hi, I am a new member, I own an FNAR. Its accurate as hell, but it dents the brass and it has a gas system that you need to perfect. Once you have these things adjusted this is one hell of a battle gun. The only issue people have is the 'gas screw system'. The screw can be tuned to make the action move faster, or slower, or not at all. Depending on how you shoot, you can adjust the screw. I have not had any issues since I adjusted my gun. It comes tuned from the factory, but you can mess around with it. You need to go on the web to see how to remove the bolt as FN says never remove the bolt. Its a silly gun to disassemble. It does not kick hard, and double tapping 308 rounds is very fun. I dont own any other rifles, so I dont know, but have heard Armalite makes a nice ar 10. Good luck! Thanks, almiz This gives everyone a much better idea of what your best options may be. If you are not really looking for "stopping power", then a .308 might be a little overkill. This depends on what you mean by "sharpen your skills beyond 200 yards". If you mean 250 yards, then a regular AR in .223 would likely suit you just fine. If you mean 400 yards, then .308 would be a better idea as it is more consistent than .223 in farther distances. So what is the longest range you predict to be shooting at? And what kind of competing are you referring to? If you plan on doing practical gun matches where moving is involved, a light weapon will suit you better. If you are sitting at a bench, then weight doesn't matter much. These are just examples of how there are many different variables that can effect the suggestions members make. And is your $1500 price max just for the rifle, or is this including everything to start shooting such as a decent amount of ammo and optics?
