P2P and/or FFL needed??

Recommended Posts

I searched and searched, but couldn't find the answer.

My uncle is moving and doesn't want his handgun any more. He wants to just give it to me. It's a '74 Walther PPK/S. Since he is just going to give it to me, do I still need to get a P2P? Does this have to go through an FFL?

Thanks in advance!!

Yes we both live in NJ.

I had someone tell me that he wouldn't bother with the P2P since NJ is a registration optional state??

If you don't bother with the P2P, it is then an illegal transfer. And you and your uncle could get into legal troubles(if LE ever finds out).

Registration for long guns is optional, handguns are registered when you fill out a P2P.

Registration of handguns is voluntary ONLY when you inherit a handgun, move here from another state with a legally purchased handgun, or have owned the handgun since before 1966. All other transfers to non FFLs MUST be done with a PPP and therefore will be registered (or else it would be an illegal transfer).
