jeff47 30 Posted August 22, 2015 I was looking at the Grendel a few years ago but it seemed to be a bigger hassle then it was worth. I'm looking at doing a SPR/DMR and was thinking of starting with a 18".223 wylde match barrel but in looking at parts it seems Grendel parts and ammo are now more common. Anyone running an AR in 6.5 Grendel? If so what kind of performance are you getting out of it and in what barrel length? I hear 18" is ideal but I'm curious with what others are finding. Thanks in advance.
Rob0115 1,107 Posted August 22, 2015 I have an 18" Grendel and it's great. Heavier bullets, better distance and more energy. I've recently built a 6mmAR which is based on the Grendel cartridge and advertised better ballistics but haven't had a chance to fire it. Frank built one too, I modeled mine after his, so maybe he'll chime in on the 6mm. He posted a target in the AR picture thread. For longer distances the 6 and 6.5 are great, even better than the 6.8 (I built one of those too). However if you don't handload 6.5 will bust the budget from what I remember and 6mmAR will bust it faster. What's you intended use? Grendel is a good hunting and long distance cartridge. Same for 6mmAR. jeff47 30 Posted August 23, 2015 I'm looking for a longer range rifle to shoot out to a few hundred yards but in a semi auto AR platform. I figure the 6.5 will give me more range, a flatter trajectory and more options with heavier bullets. I notice there are more factory ammo options recently for 6.5 so I'd go that route initially but even if I went with .223, I'd still need to buy match ammo or finally start hand loading to really get good performance. Thanks for the feedback!
